Red Mango

This location has closed… quite a while ago, but the review remains the same. I still enjoy RM better than Pinkberry. It’s McDonalds vs Burger King essentially, some are more convenient to get to, but the yogurt has a softer feel to it, and I like the selection of add-​ons much better. Still a Red Mango fan!

We have tried so many frozen yogurt places but this is the best one.
We are definitely going back again.

I love Red Mango, way more than Pinkberry. I think Red Mango is more creamier than Pinkberry, which is quite tart, and not what I like in froyo.
This place has become self-​serve, and you pay by the weight now. Be careful, because all those delicious toppings do add up!
They do have a wide variety of toppings, especially my favorites: mochi, cheesecake pieces, popping boba, etc.

I love frozen yogurt, but the recent froyo craze can make choosing a place to grab a tasty frozen snack a little daunting. With all the pay-​by-​weight shops emerging and ripping off some aspect of the Pinkberry name, I thought Red Mango was just another shops living off of Pinkberry’s success. However, during my time in NYC, more and more people began speaking highly of this chain, and I had to check it out for myself.
While I would still give Pinkberry the slight nod in terms of flavor, pretty much everything else was equal. The toppings were fresh as was the interior. You still deal with the fact that it is somewhat pricey, but that is to be expected for froyo (especially in NYC).
It is nice to see more and more shops opening. I recently saw one in Chicago’s O’Hare Aiport, and I know there are a few locations in such cities as Omaha, Nebraska. I am looking forward to seeing Red Mango in Minneapolis in the near future.
Pros: Flavors, fresh toppings, multiple locations in NYC and around the country, fun interior design
Cons: Pricey, not quite as good as Pinkberry

I’d like to preface this review by saying my experience here is not representative of all Red Mango’s.
This location, however, has seriously gone downhill. They’ve begun making coffee, muffins, egg sandwiches… and froyo? It seems like they’re having a tough time making rent, which is understandable, but you’re a yogurt place so do what you do best! All these distractions do is take away from the quality of the original product which is seriously lacking at this location. I tried the cake batter flavor the other day – it was so sour and tasted nothing like cake. I’m pretty sure there was something very wrong with it so I threw it out. The toppings were standard but kind of lacking, and there’s something «dirty» about the place.
If you want awesome self-​serve froyo in the area, go to 16 Handles a block away. It’s amazing. I still like you, Red Mango, but I will never go to this location again.

Red Mango is my life. I don’t even know what else to say about it. Pinkberry can suck it.
I’m such a mood-​driven eater that I thoroughly enjoy having the ability to make my own choices (can also be the death of me too, womp). But my staple mix-​ins are strawberries, kiwi, carob chips, and mochi, regardless of what kind of yogurt piques my fancy that day. So many of the flavours are good! Original, Madagascar Vanilla, Mango, Coconut, list goes on. I like the slight twinge of tang in Red Mango yogurt. Depending on which one you go to (the self-​serve/​pay by weight one or pay by size/​mix-​ins), your prices can differ. But I’m usually craving Red Mango like whoa, so I roll in there like money ain’t a thang and I could make it rain. It’s usually not too bad though, $ 6-​$ 8, depending how hungry (read: greedy) I am.
Bless Red Mango’s heart for expanding to Chicago too. Now I can get it in my two homes. Joy!

I came here when i was in New York awhile back. I have to say, back then, Fro-​yo was just hitting up the market. I love how this place give you generous portions, here’s not much to choose from, in terms of fro-​yo flavor but that they have is already pretty good. Their toppings are pretty fresh, esp. their mochi toppings. The décor here is cozy and there’s plenty of places to sit.

Good fro-​yo, convenient location, they let you taste before you choose and they have LOTS of toppings. They don’t skimp when loading it up, my only star deduction is for having frozen fruit. Sometimes they don’t let it thaw out all the way so when you bite into a strawberry it’s a little frozen in the middle. HOWEVER I stopped choosing the fruits and go straight for mochi/​chocolate. Also makes a great after workout snack!

This location = 3 stars
Breakdown:
–1 Star: This is not a self-​serve location so I can’t mix and match yogurt flavors.
–1 Star: Because getting more than 3 toppings will get expensive. .75 cent for the first topping. .50 cent for any additional toppings. And you only get one little spoonful of it.
–1 Star: You only get to pick from 4 fro-​yo flavors, as opposed to 8+ on the self-​serve locations. The toppings were also very limited.
+1 Star: Plenty of seating space unlike PinkBerry across the street. The store is cute and clean.

In general, I LOVE Red mango, so why 2 stars?
1) Crappy crappy service. And you thought that wasn’t possible at a self-​serve place. We were ignored and snapped at by the girl behind the register who was trying to get through as many customers in the line as she could.
2) Flavor fail. Raspberry cheesecake, that new flavor tastes NOTHING like raspberry cheesecake. The key lime pie was so artificial i felt myself turning plastic. Blueberry was alright. Original was chalky.
3) Ran out of mochi by 8pm on a Friday night. HELLO did you notice you were located in K TOWN??? Walk down the street and go buy some to refill! Jeez!
If this was the first time I had Red Mango, it would have also been my last time. Luckily I do know better.
Just know this particular NY self-​serve joint sucks.

Oh i hate this location. The servers suck, they’re sloppy. Unorganized and all over the place. Sometimes their toppings don’t even look fresh! I picked red mango over pinkberry (which is right across the street), but their service suck. They always do a sloppy job when I order a parfait.
Chocolate chip topping is so good! Also like their different kinds of granola toppings. Their cocoa flavor yogurt is yuck. Ghirardelli chocolate flavored yogurt is yums.

This place is pretty similar to pinkberry (I am not a fan of them either).
The only difference is that I thought the yogurt here tasted a little less sour. Otherwise, it is the same setup. You choose your size and then you pick out your toppings at the counter display — various fruits and candies. It was $ 2.75 for a small, and with my mango and chocolate toppings (75 cents per topping), it came out to $ 4.62!
I think I will stick to yoplait yogurts =)

Red Mango over Pinkberry anyday! (Although PB isn’t that bad either.) RM is creamier and less tart/​sour. I guess it all depends on personal preference.
I’ve been to this specific location only about 3 times. All three times I was greet by different people at the counter but they were all friendly! The service is good. The place is clean and spacious.
I like getting the original flavor + fruits for toppings. Yummm!
Last time I was there, my friend and I saw that they sell froyo in their fridge by the pints! We have yet to buy those and throw a froyo party.

In the war between Pinkberry and Red Mango, I declare Red Mango my favorite, especially with their recent manifestation of crack-​cocaine in the form of Key Lime flavored fro-​yo.

With blueberries and mango… heavenly.
Now what I don’t like is how they constantly change their pricing model. At first it was a different surcharge for a different category of extra toppings, then it was a flat rate for as many toppings. Either way, it’s kind of ridiculous to spend so much on frozen yogurt, but like a crackhead, what’s too much money for the fix you need?

While I’m not a fan of frozen yogurt as I’m an old fashion gal of traditional hard ice cream. Red Mango is indeed healthy and refreshing with fresh fruit. Red Mango unlike its counterpart rival of Pinkberry has more choices and selections of fresh fruit available and in stock. The atmosphere and décor is clean despite of the exorbitant prices for frozen yogurt and soft ice cream. They do not have business cards to offer to patrons.
I came here to accompany my Asian social networking group to welcome back a fellow friend’s return to New York from Paris, France who is in town for one week. Since I did not order any frozen yogurt, I have no comment of service or quality of food for this review.

I adore Red Mango. It’s totally one of those places that if I’m around, and even if I’m mostly full, I’ll find a way to fit a the fro-​yo into my tummy.
The last time I was by, they were having a Parfait special, which basically meant a cup of the FY and all-​you-​can-​fit toppings for the same price as the regular-​sized FY and two toppings. Crazy? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely!

Seriously, I love the Red Mango locations in New York. Going into a Red Mango store is like walking into a lounge during the daytime: always the relaxing lounge music, the fun Red Mango-​esque chairs, and the booths! There are booths! This place is chic.
I don’t remember the St Marks location offering parfaits and probiotic teas, so my sister and I went for those instead. It’s great that Red Mango is expanding past fro-​yo; I love fro-​yo and all, but sometimes it’s good to try something different. I had the Fanteasia tea with fresh hibiscus tea, sugar, and natural berry flavor. Lightly sweet, but not overwhelming. Not sure how much of the probiotics in there affected me… but it was indeed a refreshing drink! My sister’s parfait looked delicious; probably would have been better-​tasting than parfaits from other stores.
I wish there were a Red Mango in San Francisco, but I’ll settle for the dreamy locations in New York for the time being.

Red Mango is my new obsession. Their yogurt is velvety and delicious. Came here the other night and shared a pomegranate cup with cinnamon toast crunch and fresh mango toppings. It set us back maybe $ 6 and some change, but split between two, that’s not so bad. You get to enjoy a healthy treat and sit and relax at the same time. There’s ample seating in this RM location (surprised to even see booths). And the train station is conveniently right outside (F and V lines).
Only thing I didn’t like about this specific Red Mango was the service. They are horrendously aloof and spaced out, completely uninterested in helping you and totally devoid of any natural excitement over their amazing product. It’s kind of unbelievable! If their yogurt wasn’t so glorious I’d probably never step foot back into this place. Gladly, I might not have to seeing as how there are a bevy of Red Mangoes throughout the city. Yay! Rude service avoided.

I love Red Mango.
When I’m waiting on line, I inevitably regress into Forrest Gump mode as the possibilities line my head. You can have regular, green tea, my favorite, pomegranate, this new tangomoniium flavor, with mango, with blackberries, with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, bananas, pineapples, you can have it with coconut, with Cocoa Pebbles, or even Fruity Pebbles, Cap’n Crunch, almonds, granola, dark chocolate, graham crackers, and cranberries. That’s about it. But then the calorie information penetrates my intrapersonal monologue and I go with Pomegranate, plain, and simple.
I also like it more than Pinkberry, which errs on the side of acidic, watery, and Gossip Girl-​y.

Reasons why original is always better than a copy cat:
1. Bigger is better (Compared to Pinkberry’s 4 measly tables, Red Mango has a dozen.).
2. I don’t feel like I am stepping into outer space (Pinkberry is a little too green martian.).
3. The yogurt doesn’t make me squint my eyes (Guess who’s does? They are across the street.).
4. I somehow didn’t feel ripped off. I think I was expecting way too much from Pinkberry.
5. Red Mango hasn’t sold out to Amex.
6. Pomegranate is offered as a topping. Go anti-​oxidants!
7. Bathrooms (This should really be number 1 but this isn’t that kind of list.).
8. Real chairs (They may not be über-​trendy and plastic but they are plush and comfy.).
9. Family friendly (Moms, pops, and kids were bonding. The place wasn’t over taken by obnoxious teens.).
10. Red Mango is really a treat and not a trick.
This review is dedicated to Jess M. If it were not for her, I would not have given the sour fro-​yo a second chance. But Jess M raved about mochi balls in our traded work snack e-​mails and I wanted to experience this bliss of mochi in fro-​yo. Pinkberry was packed and there was a line so I crossed the street to try the *original* one in hopes that they served mochi.
Red Mango had all of my favorites. I got a regular small with blueberries, graham crackers, and mochi. The line was confusing. They say, «Move down, move down.» I didn’t realize I have to order from the cashier. Things here happen right to left (coincidence or not?). I paid $ 4 for my yogurt. Before I had stepped in I contemplated heading to Duane Reade to buy a gallon of Edy’s but sometimes you just gotta give in to the urge, throw out all financial qualms, and treat yourself. I love this yogurt. It wasn’t sour like Pinkberry and the combo of mochi, graham, and blueberry was yum. The mochi was chewy, the grahams were grainy, and the blueberries gave a slight flavor burst. I almost called Jess M on the celly but I thought I would surprise her by letting her read this review.
Jess M come back to NYC. The food needs you.
PS. A small serving of the yogurt only has 90 calories. That’s probably less than a Trader Joe’s granola bar. And it is so much more satisfying.
