I was diagnosed with a frozen shoulder and some water in my knees along with scarred cartilage, very recoverable injuries, but they require slow and steady rehabilitation for improvement. To me this means being disabled considering that I’m used to playing basketball twice a week, in addition to running and working out at the gym. I’ve pretty much felt like Samuel L Jackson’s character in the movie Unbreakable, who was cursed with an accident prone life of broken bones and (spoiler alert) seeks vengeance on the world. That’s been me, angry Sammy.
I was initially taking physical therapy via insurance that covers all my treatment, but it just wasn’t enough and I wanted more out of «physical therapy.» My active lifestyle was abruptly cut short like early pregnancy, but luckily I met Ly Marcus, owner and physical therapist at Personal Training Institute. This man has been doing an unbelievable job treating my ailments, and at times I feel like I’m ready to do the electric slide and perform a handstand free of pain. I’m learning nifty techniques during sessions that I can take home and apply to couch potato days of watching ESPN. Sometimes I’m at my weight lifting gym confusing the members as I work my body through slow effective stretches against the wall with a little towel that make me seem like the official janitor. I feel like an eager Karate Kid, but my Mr Miagi warns me not to rush and let time and discipline take its course. Wax on wax off indeed, because I’m more flexible and comfortable as the weeks go by. These greatly needed exercises leave me sweating, retaining and challenging muscles, and regaining strength and flexibility. Sometimes I think Ly could be a perfect assassin, and maybe he will be in another lifetime as shown through his extensive understanding of the body.
The facility is relatively new and extremely well maintained. While not the most spacious size, it’s perfect for the intended goal, physical therapy, not hoards of testosterone fueled workout buffs hogging gym equipment and staring at themselves in front of the mirror. Several televisions hang from the ceiling by cardio equipment, and the staff/​trainers are more than encouraging to allow members to watch their desired channels. A few motivational quotes hang from the ceiling as well, adding a nice touch and sort of «light at the end of the tunnel» for those fighting their injury battles.
A young, knowledgable staff of trainers are also at your disposal, and everyone genuinely seems to love what they are doing, and that’s always reassuring. There’s even a nutritionist available a few days a week (depending on your membership plan) to consult with, and with Winter approaching, I’m sure we could all use a little extra guidance and avoid Thanksgiving binges.

I have been going to PTI for 2 years now. The trainers are awesome and the nutritionist is great as well. I’ve lost 35 pounds since starting with PTI. I went to Equinox on 85^th street for years. I loved their amenities, but wasn’t getting the results I wanted. I switched over to PTI, and although the facility isn’t as nice, I started seeing a big difference in my conditioning and weight, which was a lot better. This place has a super friendly atmosphere, with no gimmicks. Give it shot. They also give first-​timers a complementary training session to try it out.
