Modell’s Sporting Goods

Recently renovated this store and it has 3 floors of sporting goods. It is never full and the staff is attentive and friendly. This place is consistently clean and organized and it makes it easy to shop.

This store has some good values for men. The same item in the women’s dept is 3 times the price.

This place usually has what I need at prices lower than other stores or online. I recently spent around $ 200 on activewear and gym supplies. only complaint so far is I found a small defect in a pair of $ 15 sweat pants.
I made the rare decision to get a store rewards card to get 5% off and updates on deals because I plan to return. So far I haven’t had the same problems other people are reporting. the salespeople are usually friendly and the ones who are students are smart.
I did have one weird problem. while I was trying on clothes, a section of the store was replaced with different clothes so I couldn’t find what I was trying on anymore haha.

I came in to buy a couple of items today. They didn’t have something I was looking for — a pump for an exercise ball with replacement parts — so I asked the clerk if he could check whether they had it at the store across town. He said he could, but he first had to help «everyone else» in the store. Point of fact: there was ONE other person looking around and he said he didn’t need help, but that didn’t matter to the lazy clerk. In other words, no. The clerk couldn’t help me. He said I could ask at the register. I went to the register and, even though there was no line, the guy at the register said he couldn’t call the other store for me EITHER because what if someone wanted to check out. Again, no one was in line. There was no crowd. The guy at the register tried to get the first clerk’s attention to make the phone call (even though I told the guy at the register that the clerk refused to help me), and the first clerk just ignored us. I dropped the rest of my sale on the counter and told them there was no way I was buying anything from them with this type of attitude. Seriously? It would have taken no time at all to pick up the phone, call another location, and try to help. Lazy and incompetent.

I’m loyal to Jack’s but when they don’t have what I need, Modell’s always comes to the rescue.
I like how there is someone at the front of the store to point me in the right direction and the sales staff are always really nice. Prices here are pretty standard but you can find the exact same product on Amazon (prime yo) for a little less.
Regardless, when I’m in a pinch Modell’s is always there for me!

I completely agree with the other reviewers that Modell’s customer service is very poor. The aforementioned poor customer service combined with the stores generic and underwhelming product selection are the reasons I choose no to shop here. I highly prefer City Sports or Paragon as these stores offer much a better selection and far superior customer service.

Me: Do you have hiking shoes?
Shoe Department Guy: For women or men?
Me: Uh… for…women?
SDG: No.
Me: Uh. But you have them for men?!?
SDG: Yes.
Me: Nice.
SDG: «„hangs up“»
Way to go, Modell’s. WTF century are you knuckle dragging choads inhabiting anyways?!?

Very helpful when I tired to return/​exchange a gift

Being from California, this store was completely new to me. it’s comparable to any Big5/​sporting goods store. Names like Nike and Adidas weren’t discounted, but off brands you wouldn’t find anywhere else were the best deal. I checked out shoes and there was a mix between steals and overpriced styles. There was a good clearance selection but I wasn’t in the market for shoes so I didn’t pay too much attention.
I stuck with those good off brands with styles/​prints I knew I wouldn’t find in California, so that’s where I scored. Two pairs of workout leggings in a neon splatter print (black/​pink, gray/​green), a fleece turquoise hoodie, and a camo Yankee hat… for $ 86!!! The cashier was nice enough to knock off $ 10 for becoming a rewards member by giving my email address. if I ever go back here, I’ll be on the lookout for the same thing: prints/​brands you don’t normally see in CA in the off brands.
I’m wearing my gray/​green leggings right now and they are really comfortable as well as keeping me warm in this 55 degree NorCal weather. I love knowing I won’t see anyone else wearing these when I wear them out! I believe the brand is called Marika, but I’ll find out and update.
Aside from that, the employees I had contact with were nice and friendly and my favorite, the cashier who knocked $ 10 off the total. The elevator was a little unreliable, but there are stairs for the non lazy people. I did use the bathroom on the first floor and it was nice and clean. Bathrooms are important.

Regular modell’s I suppose. Nothing new, nothing great. One thing I did notice was they had sneakers for less than Foot Locker!

The convenience of this location is hard to beat, but the staff completely unimpressive. Disinterested and uninformed. On my last visit I found a swimsuit I wanted, but not in my size. After spending 30 minutes at the upstairs counter (directed there by the downstairs counter) I left and ended up calling other locations on my own. I found the suit and had it shipped to this Modell’s. I was so annoyed with the process I didn’t want to give the store the sale, but ended up caving so I could have the suit.
I would suggest this place only as a last resort. Go in knowing what you want and check that they have it in stock first.

This is my go-​to for workout clothes, sports bras, and sneakers. They always have sales on different clothing items as well as the sneakers, and there are usually a ton of staff walking around to help.
I can’t say the same about the bottom floor — sports equipment. The shelves and aisles are usually messy with missing items. A few times I’ve been there and couldn’t find anyone to help me, with only one person manning the register down there. They often run out of various equipment with only the most expensive things in stock.

Because some GHETTO FUCKFACE decided to STEAL my free weights when I was moving from Midtown to the UES, I had to come here to buy weights AGAIN, and carry them back to my apartment which is definitely NOT a fun task especially if you’re carrying WEIGHTS! and it’s HUMID outside like today!!! If YOU, yes YOU who chose to ‘stetal’ my freeweights is reading this, I hope you drop the weights on your toes one day and get them amputated so that you can remember WHAT exactly YOU did wrong for the rest of your life (YES YOU who happens to work in 312 5^th Ave)
Anyways, this is a decent-​sized Modell’s for the neighborhood and pretty well-​equipped. Employees were fairly friendly and asked if I needed help. They have two floors, one for apparels and one for sporting goods and equipment.

Convenient location (for me). Big location and if you need something sporty they will most likely have it… as that’s pretty much the only thing it needs to sell it kinda works like that…

Eh, it’s not a terrible Modell’s. The women’s section is pretty small and really caters to runners. I went in for a swimsuit for lap swimming and they really one had two or three choices and it was the middle of summer. The customer service could definitely be improved.

Things here are nicer since they remodeled. By that, I mean nicer looking. No one who works here is any nicer than they ever were.
The only positive is that they sell some items at an incredibly cheap price points. When you are buying for kids who outgrow things in about 5 minutes (or destroy them at camp), this can make sense. For example, Soffee shorts for girls for $ 10/​ea (although they never have all sizes or colors out on the floor simultaneously). Ice skates for $ 25 (of course, they’re utter crap, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need).

This store is much better since it was remodeled. It is also fairly priced but the reason why I can’t give it more than one star is because of their customer service.
My husband was shopping with our toddler. He was buying a fair amount of clothing and sneakers (well over $ 200 worth, although that shouldn’t matter). He asked if our newly potty trained 3 year old could use the restroom and was told no. That the manager would have to open the door and he wasn’t at the store. The employee proceeded to tell my husband that even employees didn’t have a restroom to use (BS!!). He proceeded to put all of our items for purchase down and walked out.
Good job Modell’s! You just lost a fairly large sale from a regular customer — who won’t be returning. Just the thing you want to do in this economy!!!

As long as you only need the basics for running, basketball, or baseball, this place is fine. However, much beyond that and you’re out of luck.
I had to go elsewhere for all of the following: roller skates, martial arts uniforms and gear, camping supplies, travel-​ready fillable weights, etc. You can however, get a good deal of running shoes there if you catch them on sale.

The problem with this place is not matter how many times I come in here I can never find anything to buy. They carry plenty of different sports equipment but they don’t have a big selection and that is the main problem.
The employees are fairly friendly, but sometimes it is hit or miss with them. Sometimes they feel like talking to each other and ignore you and sometimes they hover over you asking you if you are finding everything is OK.
The store is fairly big and makes up two floors with the bottom floor being women’s clothes and shoes. The top flight is the sports equipment and men’s clothing.
I definitely hit up a Sports Authority before a Modell’s in the city.

I don’t know why I continue to come back to this store when I know I won’t find anything. I guess I am a bargain hunter, so I am always hoping that I will find something amazing for a great price. Must be the Chinese genes. LOL. In any case, I had no such luck yesterday. I was looking for cold weather running apparel and had just stopped into another store, and so this was store #2. In any case, they really have a limited women apparel section. They do have a sale going on. With a $ 5, $ 10 and $ 20 sale rack. But really its not worth it. I tried on some of the Under Armor apparel, and didn’t really like it. OK, so I gave up on apparel, but I needed a few accessories, so I hiked up to the 3^rd floor. Yes, this place has 3 floors. But I don’t know why, because they really don’t have that much stuff to occupy 3 floors. In any case, there were 3 staff members just standing around chatting and I looked lost, so they asked if I needed help. I asked about an ipod sports band, and a cap that wicks away sweat. The answer: we don’t have the sports band because they are sold out, and we only have 1 kind of cap like that. This place had nothing I wanted or needed, don’t think I will be going back.
FYI: The sales man who helped me out came by later and told me that they sell the sports band over at JackRabbit. He was nice and helpful, but man, why don’t they carry them?
