Business Owner

Harold Melvin is a legend of his time. He started out doing hair for his sisters when their mom couldn’t afford to send them to the beauty salon. After coming out of the service friends encouraged him to attend the beauty school Madam Purdue on 125 St. Harlem N.Y. under the G.I. bill. While attending school he worked at CasDulan Beauty Salon owned by Frenchie. Mr. Melvin was a shampoo boy there and Frenchie paid him 50 cents for a shampoo and the customers tipped him $ 1.00. Celebrities came while working with Frenchie. Katherine Dunham Dance Company where Julie Belefonte introduced Mr. Melvin to he husband Harry Belefonte. That led to Mr. Melvin traveling with Harrry Belefonte becoming his Barber and groomer and friend for over 40 years. He also became Diane Carroll’s Hairdresser travelling with her. Mr. Melvin became the First Black Hairdresser accepted in the union. He worked on movies Buck and the Preacher, Love of Ivy.
