Fix Beauty Bar

I went to Fix Beauty Bar for a blow dry with a bachelorette party, and our appointment was delayed over an hour.
When I finally sat down for a shampoo, my stylist kept drizzling water down the front and back of my dress. When I told her that I was getting wet, all she responded was «you shouldn’t be getting wet». Yes, I was drenched.
Then, after after telling her again, she tried to use a blow dryer on my outfit, and started tugging and blowing air INSIDE my dress. Really? So awkward.
I showed her a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like. During the blow out, she didn’t offer me a mirror to see the progress. The end result was an unfortunate surprise, and paying $ 50 to look to like a wet poodle was definitely not worth it.

Came here on Halloween to get a blowout with loose curls for a wedding and loved it! Lisa was so great and my hair turned out lovely. The price is good and I will definitely return when I need fancy hair!

Im usually not one to waste time writing a negative review, but I couldn’t hold back for this place!
First off, it is extremely hard to find– you have to go to the second level, up staircases, and wind though a couple hallways to make it there. I arrived and the layout was very cramped– not at all like the photos I had seen. Unlike other reviews– no coffee, tea, wine, or even water was offered to me.
She started off with the pedicure– I didn’t realize the entire pedicure would happen in the same seat as the manicure with a small metal bowl of water acting as the water bath. I didn’t catch the woman’s name (asian, clear rimmed glasses, lives in brooklyn) was extremely rough– often grabbing my foot by a single toe to lift my foot onto a block so it was up to her eye level. No scrubs, salts, oils or anything were used. When she went to remove the dead skin from my heels, it felt as if a piece of sand paper was lightly grazing my heel– i could do that!
She then moved on to the gel manicure– right off the bat, my she told me to soak my hands in a bowl of water that was freezing cold. After a couple minutes, I politely said, «Excuse me, the water is a little cold, is there any chance you could add some hot water to it?» and her response was «IF ITS TOO COLD, JUST TAKE YOUR HANDS OUT»… are you kidding?! The massage was less than 30 seconds on each hand. It was so short that my hands were still white from lotion– at that point, she handed me a paper towel and told me to wipe the excess lotion off. As I was about to leave, I noticed that multiple nails had large cracks down the center. I have been getting gels for years and this has never happened! She told me it had to be my fault, that my hands were positioned under the light incorrectly, and proceeded to put away her supplies and stand up saying «you can’t tell that much anyways.» That was the last straw. Nail technicians should be cautious about the details and want their clients to leave feeling fresh and rejuvenated. I told her I was not leaving the salon with cracked nails. She let out a large sigh, rolled her eyes, and put another coat on the nails that needed fixing.
Usually I tip 20% but this woman deserved an extremely small tip. As I went over to the receptionist, she asked if I would like to tip on my card. I said yes. As the nail technician is looking over my shoulder, the receptionist says, «A 20% tip is good right?» UM NO its not good! At that point I was done– I just wanted to get out of there and said sure to the 20%. How unprofessional for the receptionist to assume a tip amount and almost guilt you into saying no, and rude for the nail technician to be watching over my shoulder.
A BIG no. I was so excited to test this place out, and my experience was horrible. The workers seem miserable, the facilities smells like its burning from poor ventilation of the blow dryers, and they clearly don’t care about caring for their clients needs and making it a relaxing experience.

Love love Fix Beauty bar! It’s my favorite place to get a blowout. Vicki and Daphney are both wonderful. If you’re looking for a great blowout in a pretty atmosphere look no further than fix-​you will not be disappointed!

Love this place! The concept is great, you can get a blow dry while simultaneously getting your nails done. I went on a Thursday morning, was finished in about an hour (just did mani/​blow out.) Service was impeccable, I had Daphne doing my hair and Rosa handling the nails. Both did fantastic jobs, will ask for them when I go back.
The equipment was clean and the space was really cozy. Don’t get discouraged by the entrance, the space is large and open with big windows on the 2^nd floor. While getting your treatments, you can sit next to or across from your friends and there is no central structure or large TVs blocking anything. Very smart of them.
Would HIGHLY recommend!

Truth be told, I came there because of the same article in Waz W.‘s review below. I was willing to pay the price to be socially responsible.
However, I was ultimately disappointed. The pedicure was ridiculously uncomfortable and because of the way the chairs and tables were set up, I couldn’t see what the pedicurist was doing to my feet. When she first dipped my feet into the water, it was burning, burning hot and she had to dump two pitchers of cold water into it to make it mildly comfortable. The paint job on my toes was uneven and only lasted a week or so.
The manicure was similarly uneven, and the paint started a millimeter or two away from my cuticle on some fingers so by day 2 it looked like I needed a new manicure. It did not chip quickly, however.
The only plus was that they were extremely sanitary. The place was empty at lunchtime on a Friday, and showed a lot of wear and tear. I am not sure it will be around for much longer, which is a shame because I love the concept and the fact that they do not exploit their employees.

Cool concept, but absolutely NO ambiance. I got a blowout, mani and pedi and I was literally the only person there. It is nothing like Drybar’s fun vibe. However, the services were performed quickly and efficiently and they did a very nice job.

After the recent New York Times expose about nail salons, I’ve been doing my nails on my own. I recently came to Fix Beauty Bar with a friend as we were both in need of a good pedicure. We picked this place as this article had mentioned Fix as a socially responsible, ethical salon (

Pretty nice space with a good selection of nail colors. Slightly cramped, but that’s not usual for a nail salon in NYC. They offer complimentary tea, coffee, and wine.
Even though we were the only two customers there for nail services, we couldn’t sit next to each other. There were plenty of chairs available, but the nail techs just didn’t want to move their equipment over. What’s the point of going to the nail salon with a friend if you can’t chit chat while you’re getting your nails done?
The pedicure itself was very mediocre, and I don’t think I’ll be back for more. When the nail tech was done scrubbing my heels, I remember thinking to myself «Really? That’s it? I can do that at home.» On the upside, the color is holding up well. It has been 10 days, and there are no chips even though I’ve been wearing sandals all the time.

A place I definitely would like to go again. Good price and service. I hope they have more color choices though.

I was walking to work from the UES and saw a sign for a place that did blow-​outs and manis at the same time. I ran inside — excited to cross two things off of my To Do list.
They got me right in and gave me a phone charger to borrow (all salons should have iPhone chargers at every station!!). Lisa did an amazing blow out. I don’t like hairspray or my hair to feel stiff. At other salons, when I say this, stylists interpret this as me not wanting heat protector and I walk out smelling like burnt hair. Lisa got it perfect; I smell delightful.
Unlike regular salons, this place is built for doing both services at the same time so you aren’t awkwardly bending in a stylist chair while your nails are painted. The chairs are super comfy.
I originally deducted a star because they didn’t have Essie Fiji color polish (what???)
I put the star back because they gave me an hour of my life back. Fair trade.

Who has time for two separate appointments for blowout and mani? Not me, and not any of my friends in Manhattan. I love this place — I always get in and out quickly, with the best results. Very friendly staff and always a relaxing experience.
I’d also add that, in light of the New York Times’ revelations about poor treatment of nail techs by many NYC salons, I am so glad Fix has no such arrangements and treats their staff incredibly well. It’s worth it to pay a bit more and know the person doing my nails isn’t being treated despicably — something I can’t know for sure at other places.
Go there now!

I was in New York for a business trip and popped in for some beauty treatments at Fix. I’ve heard from multiple ladies that Fix is a trendy, luxurious hair and nail salon, so I figured I’d give it a shot.
My shampoo was very relaxing. My stylist really spent time on my hair. It was so clean and soft, even just after the shampoo and conditioner! I sat down in the chair for my blow dry, and a sweet nail technician began performing my manicure simultaneously (I’m pretty indecisive, so she helped me pick out a pretty blue shade; it’s not easy when you have so many color options!).
By the time both services was done, I was thrilled with my beautiful blowout and my sparkling manicure. Throughout the entire experience, the staff checked to see if I needed anything to drink or if they could make my session more enjoyable. The owner was also in the salon that day. She was very attentive and asked about my experience. That really makes a difference.
So, 6, no 7 stars for Fix. If you’re in Manhattan, you’d be bonkers not to try it out. You’ll leave feeling great (and with some extra spending cash for a little shopping).

I booked appointments here for a bachelorette party of five. When I called to make the appointment, the receptionist neglected to ask my name and the time our party would arrive. I had to be the one to ask if she wanted that information. I assumed she was new and let it go, but the disorganization was apparent on the day of our appointments.
As for the services, I have a very healthy bob with bangs and very little natural wave to my hair. It is literally the easiest blowout a stylist can hope for. I should explain that I have been a cosmetologist myself for nearly five years so I knew right away that my stylist’s technique was off. However, I was happy just to be the client for once and tried to let it go. When she finished and handed me the mirror, my head was frizz city. Very little product was used and I had to request that a flat iron be used to smooth everything out. Unfortunately, I left wishing I had brought a hat. My stylist was very nice, I do have to say that. Lovely person.
My nails look very nice and the manicurist was very sweet. She is the only reason I feel guilty giving a one star.
However, the bad far outweighed the good in this situation. We all had to redo our hair before going out (not even two hours later). A good blow out should last two days at least. I don’t have the time or money to waste on a blowout that lasts two hours.
My biggest issue is that I called ahead to ask if this salon can accommodate all hair types. One of the members of our party is African American and I wanted to be sure she could enjoy the full service. I was told yes. It took the stylist FOUR HOURS to do a blow out and to curl her hair. That is not an exaggeration. Our appointments were at 3 and she finished a little after seven. Mind you, we had plans for the theatre and we had to leave her behind to go pick up the tickets.
Again, as a stylist, I understand the difficulties of different hair types. My clientele is extremely diverse. However, if I took FOUR HOURS to blow dry a girl’s hair I would be fired on the spot.
I won’t even go into the insanity of trying to check out at the end of the service.
I would not recommend this salon and I will not be coming back.

I had such a wonderful experience here! What a wonderful concept to be able to get your hair and nails done WELL at the same time.
I booked an appointment that morning and when I walked in 10 minutes early they took me right away. All of the staff were incredibly warm and welcoming. They did a great job on my hair, my blowout has lasted beautifully for four days now. Will definitely be going back!

Today I went to my second beauty blowout bar. This facility was also very nice and professional. The shampoo felt terrific. The woman that dried my hair was very nice and tried very hard to make sure that I like my hair. they offered to you or coffee while I waited. I did have to wait about 15 minutes for my stylist. My hair wasn’t quite as perfect and a soft as it was at the dry bar Parker Meridian but I was allowed to use a Groupon and they were also very nice here.

I got a blowout here and the girl helping me out was really nice. She curled my hair and when I didn’t like it, she redid it until I was satisfied. The curls lasted the entire day+next.

All beauty bars are not created equal.
After spending more time (and money) than I probably should at the various beauty bars around the city (Drybar, DreamDry, BDry, Pucker), I’ve gotten a sense of how these places operate and what you can expect. Unfortunately, Fix Beauty Bar, like my blowout, fell flat of my expectations.
The place seems to be disorganized. Prior to the appointment, I was getting multiple email confirmations with different times. The staff at the front desk didn’t know what services I booked and were confused when I told them I booked a blowout and makeup. At other places, the stylist sets me up in front of a mirror and spends a few minutes asking questions about my hair and the style I want. No such thing here. After washing my hair, she seated me and walked away, calling out over her shoulder to ask what I wanted while she was getting her tools. It felt awkward, trying to explain what I wanted to her back.
Not a fan of the way my blowout was done. I asked for loose curls and body. The technique involved wrapping sections of my hair in lots of hairbrushes and hanging them off my head. Zero product. The end result looked pretty but extremely fragile, as though a stiff wind could blow it apart (it did, later). My hair ended up with hardly any body, extremely dry, and with massive flyaways. I had to persuade the stylist to at least give me some hairspray to smoothen it down. By the time I got home, the curls were almost gone. Very disappointing.
I’m mostly happy with the way my makeup looked, but the staying power was disappointing. It started to look cakey early into the evening, and the eye makeup was smudging badly.
I get the feeling that makeup is not a major service they do here. No one seemed to have any idea that I was getting makeup done. It was odd and I almost wanted to cancel it because it felt like they weren’t prepared for me. It also seemed to be an issue that I wanted hair before makeup done. I’ve always done it that way, because the washing and heat from the hairdryer can mess up your makeup.
All in all, the experience felt awkward and results were pretty mediocre. I was hoping to have this place in my rotation of beauty bars, but it doesn’t look like it’s meant to be.

What a great concept, get your hair AND nails did at the same time, comfortably.
1. Worked with me on scheduling and rescheduling.
2. Super cute spot. Friendly and professional staff. Gteat services. My blow out lasted for days without ton of product, which would make it look good at first but ends up making it heavy/​greasy. Pedi was amazing, my heels were scrubbed so smooth! As one girl told me, one owner is obsessed with blow outs, the other with manicures, and they only hire people who meet their personal standards.
3. Great color selection and high end polishes. I am not buying Nars or Channel, but it was great fun to try.
4. Love the options for blow outs. They will do whatever, but they have named some popular options.
I don’t live or work on the UES, but would return without a doubt. Open another Fix in BK, please!

This is the 3^rd time and I was disappointed this time. I paid extra for a 10 minute head massage that was definitely NOT 10 minutes and just wasn’t very good. I had been looking forward to it all day and it was disappointing. It wasn’t anything more than people normally do when they are waiting a few minutes for conditioning.
My nails look terrific — that was great — as usual. But my hair — I look like a 50s pin up calendar — which isn’t what I was going for. Hopefully my hair settles down a bit by tomorrow. Also, if you normally offer wine or coffee — why did you only ask — «Do you want a glass of water?» No, I want a glass of wine — and now I feel like an alcoholic — thanks for making me ask and feel awkward.
I had such a good experience last time, so I will try again — but next time I will request Vicky. Had her before and she was great.

Got a blowout and manicure here today in prep for 3 upcoming interviews. Have to say was totally fantastic. The girls who did my nails and hair were SO nice and true artists at their jobs. I also got to chitchat with one of the owners about our mutual love of coffee. It’s the type of place where they attend to you from the minute you enter to the minute you leave and are just genuinely friendly. And I got to use Dolce and Gabbana nail polish which is kind of awesome.
I think this place fills a true void because it combines two amazingly essential services quintessential to the female grooming routine — blowout & manicure and does efficiently & well!
Also of note, the blowouts are $ 40, and the manicures are $ 15, both are really reasonable for NYC in my book!
