Chock Full of Nuts Cafe

I normally go to Gregory’s, FIKA, and Starbucks and I’ve ignored this place for the past 3 years of attending Baruch. I recently decided to stop by to get the hot caramel latte and fell in love. I’ve been coming back regularly because there’s always no line and the drinks are great and well made!
Will be back often to try their breakfast sandwiches also!

It’s a shame that everyone seems to have forgotten about this little gem. I’ve walked by this place a million time. It’s easy to miss, as it’s a tiny little shop sandwiched between an apartment complex and pizza joint.
I finally stopped in, after hearing how legendary their signature sandwich once was back in the day. The Chock Classic ($ 3.79), is date nut and raisin bread with cream cheese. It’s literally one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve ever had. The bread was incredibly soft, and the cream cheese wasn’t piled on too thick.
I really recommend trying this place out. There isn’t any seating, but with nice weather around the corner, I recommend taking your food to Madison Square Park, and have breakfast in the park. The price is extremely reasonable, especially for the quality. They also offer a 10% student discount, and the employees are very friendly.
Beware that the hours listed on Unilocal are incorrect. They open at 7 a.m. on weekdays and 7:30 a.m. on weekends. I’m not sure of closing times.

Sadly I tried to go here today around 5pm but the windows are covered in paper and the doors were locked. The storefront and signage is clean and well kept so it must of just recently closed.
This would of been my first time at a Chock Full O Nuts café. I don’t want to go to one of their kiosks inside a grocery store, I wanted the real experience. Sadly they seem to be disappearing. And this looks to have been the VERY LASTl and final stand alone store in Manhattan.
I live near this location and if I see it open I’ll update this posting.

Short memoir here: My Dad used to get his coffee, each morning, down the block from the Empire State Building years ago. Fast forward 25 – 40 years later — Same quality with more so many more choices. ‘The Heavenly Coffee’ is complemented by full meals, which makes it a pleasure to come here. Good idea to take a break from other coffee bars with affectation with their ‘Barista’s’.
Can still buy Chock Full brand in and out of NYC area in supemarkets, naturally.

I have an apartment listed for sale next door to this Café. One day I had just 10 – 15 min to get lunch before I went to my appointment and decided to stop by this store. I ordered a Turkey sandwich with bacon. It was surprisingly tasty and a decent size. They have a small eating counter at the store where I ate my sandwich.
For the price, it was a good meal.

This place is NOT a sitdown place This place is more of a Grab and go type of place. Everything is Reasonable in price and good quality. Orderd a Hot chocolate one day and it was good for the price a little over a dollar. The place was clean and the people are nice and every order is filled quickly.

Went here for breakfast and really liked it. I especially appreciated the energy breakfast which helped keep me going all day until dinner.

Though as a native New Yorker of considerable age who remembers the original, I prepared to see an enlarged menu, changes in the design & personnel, but nothing prepared me for the gruesome service, wait, lack of amenities, and though I spoke patiently and politely to the waitstaff (who really didn’t know the daily menu – claimed he had just arrived and hadn’t checked, and who darted to and fro to the kitchen to check), I was unpleasantly disappointed in my order, asked for some cole slaw, received a large order & was charged for it. I observed the traffic, the young woman near the entrance who improvised, sulked, and only assisted a few customers. As I waited for my order to arrive, a waiter from the counter service approached me – which indicates lack of organization, communication, and no interest in offering high level service.
I wonder how this enterprise will survive on a very competitive street with great places. The sandwich I ordered is one i’ve eaten elsewhere, and Chock’s was lacking much, and was carelessly put together. When I asked for tarter sauce, I was told it was already on the sandwich, so I asked whether the chef was in charge===for the sauce made the entire sandwich soggy. In other places, the sauce accompanies the meal.
I took time to observe other customers; there was lots of conversation, and I could understand that there is little turnover of tables in an area filled with businesses, stores, traffice (I know this area well) BUT THIS PLACE IS ON THE LOWEST LEVEL OF QUALITY, SERVICE, ORGANIZATION. OR CONTRIBUTING ANYTHING SPECIAL OR NEW TO DISTINGUISH IT FROM THE OTHER EATING PLACES.
Totally disgusted and disappointed, I paid $ 20, includIinga good tip (why punish hard, \working but inefficient workers?) I will never return.

Did any of the reviewers here bother to actually look at the street address and realize they are Unilocaling about the WRONG place? This is not the sit down diner closer to 5^th Ave, as it is the small little grab and go nook that is the size of a closet closer to Lexington. And I wonder why I sometimes want to strangle people.
Anyway, this little spot is good to pick up a hot cup of Joe in the morning, and a pastry or bagel. If you are sick of burnt tasting Starbucks or watery Dunkin Doughnuts this is a good alternative. Rich and tasty coffee the way I remember it. Counter guys are quick and friendly. Don’t sneeze or look the other way or you might walk right by it. Or actually bump into the diner a few blocks over that most everyone here keeps leaving reviews for.

Chili, not good. Not good at all. I couldn’t finish the bowl, and it wasn’t cause I wasn’t hungry. The kitchen couldn’t even get a damn grilled cheese sandwich right. A classic, simple little thing. They ODed me on American cheese (8 slices) and butter. I shouldn’t be able to count the slices of cheese on my sandwich, but I could cause it wasn’t melted in the center. FAIL!

Absolutely old school. Great coffee, free refills at table. Pancakes are a-​mah-​zing. Love it here. Cozy and just right for weekend breakfast. Super service.

Looking for a quaint diner location with that little something extra in Chelsea? This is the place.
Convenient to my gym, my buddy and I went in for an «after-​workout bite» and we were pleasantly surprised. First of all, Chock Full O Nuts Coffee…’nuff said. But then we spotted the signature Whole Wheat doughnuts and had to have one (yes…BEFORE we ate). It truly is «heavenly coffee» but the doughnut was a nice addition to the experience.
We were just coming from the gym so the idea was to keep it simple. My buddy ordered a BLT and I got a «gooey grilled cheese with ham» and a steaming bowl of the split pea soup. While I could have done without the toast points that came with it, the soup was a split pea lover’s dream and a perfect accompaniment to my grilled cheese (half of which I took «to go» and plan to enjoy later).
From the placemats to the wall décor, this café was a walk in history from the Depression Era until now and it was good to see that this establishment and its standards have endured this long. Our waitress was attentive, funny and pleasant and our experience over-​all was enjoyable.
Next time I’m doing the breakfast menu!

This tiny store packs a big punch… Move over Dunken Donuts. I frequent this store quite often and i always get a bagel with cream cheese with a hazelnut coffee. It tastes great, but the most important thing is that it tastes great all the time.

Every morning I awake to the amazing smell and taste of Chock Full o’ Nuts New York Blend coffee. It’s something of a requirement for me now. If I don’t have it, the day doesn’t begin. For anyone.
SO! You’ll imagine the smile that spread across my face when I first saw that the Chock Full o Nuts Café was set to (re)open in Manhattan! My girlfriend and I scooted on down to 23^rd street and straight into what I hoped would be mecca. Was it? Yes. Yes it was.
Not fully sure what to expect, I was surprised to find that this is a sit down café. I thought it would be just like any Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, but nope! We were greeted and seated immediately after we entered, and had barely settled in before our waitress was already taking our coffee orders! We went with the classic hot coffee with unlimited refills. Not once did my coffee ever reach critical low levels. In fact, I’m not even sure I saw each time it was refilled. It just kinda happened. Mysteriously. Magically. Heavenly. (see what I did there? Incorporating their tag line into the review? I thank you!). The coffee, which I’m pretty sure was their regular blend, as opposed to my favorite New York Blend, seemed to get better with each refill!
Then there was the food! My girlfriend got the patty melt and I had the double cheeseburger. You can pick from 6 or so cheeses. Pepperjack with grilled mushrooms was my choice of the day. Sauteed onions come with it too, but I opted to keep them off. We also had a side order of fries and coleslaw. The best part? They have malt vinegar!!!
After everything was said and done, the bill came out to a measly $ 22 for unlimited coffee, two meals, and two side orders! If we weren’t so ridiculously full, we probably would’ve jumped on one of their maaaany dessert options. Malts and Shakes (yes there is a difference. A fact many diners don’t know…), New York style cheesecakes, pies, donuts, etc etc etc!
It’s too bad that there is only one of these locations in the city, especially since there used to be over 130, according to the placemat history lesson! Hopefully this location will thrive and more locations will spring up throughout Manhattan!
Lastly, a special shout out to our waitress! She was exceptionally friendly and efficient! As I said, I sometimes never noticed when she refilled my coffee! I’m talking ninja waitress here!

The best thing about my experience there was the waitress. Coolest waitress EVER. She helped us decide what to get and what not to get… she knew the menu really well… she took care of us like a mother would.
The food we ordered was a little above mediocre (except for the corn chowder soup which was great!), but perhaps we chose the wrong things to eat at a coffee shop. I think it might be more of a breakfasty joint.
Getting seated quickly didn’t quite work out for some reason, but it just opened within the last two weeks. I’m sure they’re still working out the kinks.

Thank God there is a new GOOD option on the block. Chock is a throwback diner with the throwback feel. The setup is typical, either tables or counter.
I went for lunch and had an omelet with home fries and toast. The taste of the food and service is great! I can honestly say I have never had better toast in my life. Yes, you read that right.
It just opened and the food and service are on point, lets just hope and pray it stays that way.
I found a new, decently priced lunch spot.

If a soft opening means some staff are clueless and others could care less then that’s what this is. On the plus side, some of us have vague memories of these old school spots that our parents took us to for a quick sandy and coffee for them. My mom would have loved this spot.
They resurrect old school faves– A charlotte russe at $ 2.75 looks pillowy and divine. Two donuts either wheat or vanilla/​sugar are $.99. They definitively have updated the classics.
The old Comfort diner was missed by us Chelsea folk and we look foward some good sandys, desserts and most definitely the ‘heavenly” coffee.

Good coffee at a good price, with nice workers. This was my coffee place of choice when I wanted to pick up a coffee before getting on the subway.

Wait, stop. Go back. You just missed it.
Yeah, that’s right: that sign said Chock Full O’Nuts, also known as «Your dad’s favorite vacuum-​sealed can brimmed with coffee grounds.» But out of the can and into the Empire goes this house-​hold favorite brand, and it maintains it’s Old Faithful reputation even when the scent isn’t mixed with your old man’s musk and Marlboro smoke.
«Cozy» by NYC real-​estate standards, the CFoN boutique on 23^rd St is an unassuming to-​go-​only coffee joint that brews a rich, tasty, no-​frills cup of java perfect for your trip to work (for about a quarter less than the Dunkin’ half a block away).
No longer just the place I go when Dunkin’ is packed, CFoN is my new daily morning stop. Dare I say that it boasts a roast that’ll toast your throat? No, I dare not. My dad would definitely kick my ass if I did.

In high school economics class, we had to «purchase» stocks and track their development over the term. I bought Saks, Nordstrom, and Chock Full O Nuts. I threw the last one in since my teacher forced me to ‘diversify”.
Having never drank coffee in my life or laid eyes on a Chock Full O Nuts store, I chose it based solely on the name. I like the phrase «chock full». A character in Tom Robbins’ book Jitterbug Perfume says that «there are no synonyms», and in a literal sense I agree. I won’t claim that abundance, success and growth are synonyms of «chock full», but they are terms I think of when I hear the phrase. They are also terms one wants to be associated with stocks and bonds.

My stock in Chock Full O Nuts did very poorly over the term. Maybe because everyone and their dog (me included) wasn’t yet addicted to the daily joy of iced coffee.
Now that I am a full fledged decaf addict, I am constantly looking for the daily cup of iced, not too sweet, not too expensive joe. Enter Chock Full O Nuts. I had no idea it was a chain of cafes, but they are scattered throughout the city. The 23^rd St location that I stopped into was just a walk in. I was disappointed there was no place to sit down, rest my feet and enjoy a little AC, so minus one star.
I find this little café more appealing than say overpriced Starbucks or never-​seem-​to-​get-​what-​I-​ordered-​DD because when the gentleman behind the counter asked if I wanted any milk in my coffee he listed soy as an option (usually the only options are dairy milk). Also, when I asked for a bran muffin, he mentioned that I should try something else since the bran was kind of dry. Thank you, sir, for not sending me off into the heat with an icky muffin and dairy filled coffee!
Technically, I think Chock Full O Nuts’ stock is still a bear, but in my book it’s a bull.
