72nd Street Dog Run

I consider this a pretty good dog run due to the size and amount of seating. There is a good amount of seating with benches along the sides of the run and benches around some of the large trees. Love that the large trees also provide some much needed shade.
Like most others, this run is filled with sand & small gravel so it’s dusty from dogs playing and just wind from the water/​highway.
There are two sections of the run. One is very large with a lot of room to run and play fetch. Then a smaller area as well. I don’t remember seeing any signs that restrict the small area to only small dogs.
I’ve been a few times so far and people and dogs have seemed friendly. Some scuttles between other dogs but the owners talked calmly.

There are two levels to this dog run that not everyone knows about. But neither are great.
The. One on top that you are more likely to come across is smaller with a gravel base and benches on the sides and ib the middle. Separated into two sections like most, there is an area for small dogs and an area for large dogs though usually there is a mix in the large dog area. There is no covering anywhere so if the weather is crisply youre going to be in it and if its rain in be prepared to walk away with a grayish film on you from the gravel. The people are very hit or miss. Sometimes they are chill, responsible dog owners/​walkers and sometimes they are uptight anxious dog owners/​walkers which makes it hard to enjoy.
If tou walk through the tunnel on the path, down the stairs and to your left there is a much bigger fenced space. It seems like this is the forgotten park as it is under the highway and though that provides some cover, the fence often has some holes, gates dont always close properly and the base though wood chips is usually more mud than anything.

We have been going to this dog run since we got our dog as a puppy about a year and half ago. There is a two sections to this dog run once you enter main gate. One section is small dog and the other for larger dogs.
The dog run is clean, spacious and well kept with small gravel grounds, water, a few trees, benches, poop bags and trashcans.
The dog owners are typically very nice and everyone has a good sense of community.

The best dog run on the upper west side. I’d give 5 stars but you never know if your dog is going to be attacked but that’s not the runs fault. This is the least smelly run and the best cared for. The people who take care of this run keep it very clean.
Here’s the trick. Don’t just walk into the run, give it a few minutes, watch to see if there are dogs in there who are poorly trained. Wait them out or do don’t go in.

I like that they have separate runs for large and small dogs. It’s clean and very large. There’s not a lot of light once the sun starts to set which is fine but can’t take my dog there during the week after work in the winter.

Came here for their Halloween event-​it was fun to see all the dressed up dogs running around and playing with one another! The gravel is to give some soft paw support but ‘eh. This place is spacious with plenty of seating and trees, though!

Been going to this run off and on for a year now.
Things it has going for it:
— Decent size for a dog run in Manhattan
— Safe area/​park
— Hose to cool off dogs
— Separate large dog and small dog areas
— Plenty of shade
— Plenty of seating for humans
— Clean
— Supported by a good organized group of local dog owners
Things it has against it:
— No bathrooms nearby for humans
Right now this is by far the best dog run in Riverside Park.
