Haven’t been to this place in years. I remembered it as being very dark. Went tonight with a small group for a retirement dinner and were very pleasantly surprised. Much brighter; the food was excellent. Pleased with the service as well. We were so happy with this experience that we made plans to come back on a regular basis.

I haven’t been to Steak and Stein in quite some time so hubby and I decided to go in. We were greeted by a woman whom we both thought may have been one of the owners. I vaguely recall her a little over a year ago when they were under new ownership and the same woman greeting us. This woman turned out to also be our waitress. It didn’t take long to realize that there was something wrong with her. We weren’t sure at first. We thought maybe she has a debilitating disease or something. But as we told her our order, it became very clear… she was completely hammered. She was attempting to take our order, no pad or pen in hand and she seemed confused as to where these items were. She reached in her pocket and pulled out two pens and a wad of cash which she tried to write on. Once she realized it, she reached back and found the pad. Now when it was time to actually write our order the pen was upside down… she reached for the next pen which was clicked closed but she still kept trying to write with it… I reached for the pen and clicked it open for her. Finally, let’s get our order going. Even tho we stated what we wanted several times over and her confirming over and over what we wanted, she still couldn’t get it straight. After her walking away to put in our order I said to my husband«she’s frikken hammered» it was obvious. So she comes back over to ask our order again stating that the kitchen needs her to confirm what we ordered. She kept slurring and was mixing up what we asked for. We must have said it several times and super slow… But once again she stepped away, then came back again stating that the kitchen staff doesn’t know what their doing and she needed to confirm our order AGAIN. By now I was becoming seriously agitated with this woman and I just wanted to leave. Clearly she wreaked of alcohol, could hardly stand up or even complete a sentence. Nevermind not being able to write with a pen. We ended up grabbing another waiter to which we asked to check our order because clearly this woman is drunk. He just rolled his eyes as if this was a common practice of hers. We asked if she was one of the owners to which he said«no» but I still believe she was. One of the other waitress was overheard telling the drunk woman that she could stay, but she will not be serving anymore customers. My steak was undercooked, so I just had it packed up and brought it home. The husband’s meal seemed to be just as he ordered. We were compensated with a drink and free dessert. The waiter also gave us a 15%off coupon and said that she most likely will no longer be working there next time we come, but I have serious doubts about that. He was an excellent waiter to us! I don’t think I will ever step foot in there again…

Overall, I was disappointed by this restaurant, although I did have a decent meal. As another reviewer writes, with a name called Steak & Stein, you would expect one impressive beverage selection. So I sat down at my table, looked around for the impressive draft list and found none. Upon inquiry as to the draft selection, I was told they have either Sam Adams or Coors light. REALLY? So I went with my faithful choice of bottled Corona, and the waitress actually brought me a bottle of Coors Light! I was not in the mood to complain so I drank it. For starters though, apparently the waitstaff in dire need of customers because the place was barren, feels the need to compete with one another for customers. A friendly waiter named John first greeted me as my server, yet moments later an older aged woman who did not introduce herself asked for my beverage order and then my meal order and was clearly my true server. This gave off a very distasteful impression. A steakhouse restaurant has much potential for high end dining along with expected higher end prices. This restaurant has neither, although I would say it does have potential. The salad bar was very ordinary, although the ingredients were fresh. The bread although warm and crisp looked very generic. My 8 ounce strip steak was cooked perfectly to medium, although I could not tell if the mashed potatoes were out of a box or not. The gravy it came with was served in a small plastic ramekin which detracted from the plate, although the plate presentation was actually done nicely with some parsley and lettuce leaf under the steak. My bill came to $ 20 which with one beer was quite a bargain for a steak dinner. I am certain had I gone to Longhorn Steakhouse, my bill would have been double, the quality control much higher for a corporate chain, and the ambience more cozy and higher-end. Upon exiting the restaurant, I noticed the display case one other reviewer mentions, in this case though, it was filled with raw samples of their meat and fish offerings to showcase their entrée proteins. I found this somewhat interesting as I stared at them briefly, although there was something offputting about it. Steak and Stein, with a scarce clientele, is clearly cost shaving to stay afloat. They need to raise the bar as a steakhouse across the board, and perhaps word-of-mouth will get the local clientele to come in rather than just the local hotel guests like myself.

I’m a local. The name«steak and stein» is a name I’ve known for 30 years since living in Rockland county NY. The steak and stein location on Nanuet NY20 years ago was great compared to this one. Although, THEFOODHEREIS still GOOD. But It should be better!!! I do agree that something here is missing. PERHAPSTHE«STEIN» element is non existent. I MEANCOMEON…3DRAFTBEERSONTAPWHENSTEINISINYOURNAME?! I have been there 2 times in the last year… and both times the food was good. Both of us had NY strip steaks Last night. We asked for medium rare and sort of got it. Like another reviewer said… at least the steaks were juicy. Also… one side… but you do get salad bar… and it is pretty good. No option for a baked potato and a vegetable??? Come on… Has Greek salad as well, at least that was good. Overall the place is on the weak side with lots of room for improvement. They need to read these reviews… good location… big big parking lot… aparently they can accommodate a party of 100 people. I Suggest they go with the German beer hall element… serve some German food as well as steak and put some Weis bier in those steins!!! Prost Damn it!!! :-) and have an Oktoberfest in the parking lot.

This place was creepy. Like, it’s weird you are empty on a Friday night, but I can look past that. It was right near our hotel, but I don’t think any good restauarant is empty on a Friday night but maybe if most diners are hotel guests it fluxuates. They had a big display case out front that had nothing in it. Really? Maybe get rid of the case or stick something in it. I was just very unsettled looking at the menu. Why? Because it was someone else menu! The pages were clearly photocopied(like where you copy out of a book or something and it’s less in focus on the side because it’s not flat on scanner) and it even copied the outline of the original menu book it was in AND the address and location to the original restaurant. The images said they were representational and were not meant to reflect meals. I don’t know if that’s stupid on the original source or this place. If you aren’t going to sho pics of your food, why bother with stock images you found online? But the photos were a bit blurry and in black and white so it wasn’t like it really mattered. The service was decent and even had someone come around to fill up water. The salad bar was so small I think it had only 3 toppings. The waitress didn’t even ask how we wanted our steak cooked so when she stopped by for a refill we mentioned yeah, we’d actually like medium rare. My boyfriend and I weren’t very hungry and didn’t need leftovers so we shared a steak meal and luckily it wasn’t one of those places that charge for sharing. The steak itself was pretty good, juicy and a little salty. Probably not good enough to justify the cost if we hadn’t split it. A place with steak in the title should specialize and produce a great steak and it was good but not steakhouse good. The baked potato was fine but the broccoli, though with a nice garlicky flavor, was smothered in a garlic drenched oil I basically had to dab each piece on a napkin to uncoat it and make it edible. They forgot to bring us bread that was listed as included but by time we realized it wasn’t worth waiting for. I liked the décor with the wood and brick walls and the white string lights but the food was subpar and any place that steals someone’s menu and can’t even hide it doesn’t sit well. Although we wanted dessert, they had none listed and we just wanted to get out of there by that point.

even though there was a staffing shortage the service was excellent. Our wait staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. Very nice rustic ambience. The prime rib was fantastic! I highly recommend:)

My husband and I had been talking about going here for a while so we decided to try it out this past Saturday night. It was fairly early so there was no wait, and our hopes were high. That didn’t last long. We sat there for over 15 minutes and still no one came over to wait on us. I had to ask for service. I ordered the filet mignon and my husband had the prime rib. We had overheard another table complain their steaks were over cooked so we ordered medium rare. We had the salad bar, which was fresh, but very plain and limited choices. When our steaks came out they were both over cooked. The manager was very nice, and she comped our drinks and took some off the dinner bill, but we won’t be back. For what they charge for their steaks, we will go down the road to Schlesinger’s for a proper steak dinner.

We arrived with a party of 17 people. Our selection consisted of a nice choice of NY strip steak, prime rib, salmon, or BBQ ribs and chicken. Everyone seemed to want their selection prepared in different ways(well done, medium, rare, end cut, etc.), and that was the way they got it. The food was plentiful and good. The salad bar was very good. Service was excellent even with such a large crowd. Prior to sitting down, we gathered in the cozy bar area. I would have liked to have seen a better selection of draft beers, especially since the name implies that beer is a feature. The price for everything was very reasonable. We understand that the management is new and is the process of upgrading the restaurant. It looked much brighter than it did at a previous visit some months ago.

So if you read any negative reviews which this is;… The common thread that weaves these unpleasant experiences here are the owner!!! I am overwhelmed at how MEAN this guy is to the customers and staff!!! I thought I was on a hidden camera show. I asked him a question about happy hour rates and he started screaming at me and my kid! I saw his face getting red and his eyes looked crazy. I left his space out of fear for my safety. Than he got in to a huge shouting match w a older African American fellow; over happy hour prices! A busboy tryed to intervein and he threatened him. Someone(my sister in law) called the cops because the owner resembled someone in a cocaine or amphedamines psychosis !! Than the cops show. He let loose a tirade of accusations on this man and demanded HEBEARRESTED??? I swear to you I was waiting for Ashton kutcher to jump out ! What a creep! He came back in and did shots and was talking crap I’m still in shock Um,. So if your looking to get berated overcharged and go to jail well heck go see this POS manager at Steak & stein Choke on it

I witnessed the manager yelling at the busboy. He looked like he was still in high school. The burger was good and service was average. But the manager does not look friendly at all.

There is nothing spectacular going on here. The food is average at best, our service was below average, the décor is outdated. We ended up visiting this restaurant because the other steak house down the road had an hour wait. We were seated right away when we arrived at 7 pm on a Saturday. I will say that this place has potential, maybe the new management can turn it around

Our second time there was excellent too. Now they have an additional page to their menu. «lighter side» or «light fare»… a bit smaller portions for less money. It works very well for me bc I can never finish their regularly served portion since the meal comes with salad and bread… Nice ideal… Def recommend this place.

great place, Gabriella was a great hostess. They serve you a drink, 1.5 oz or more on a shot of jack. The steak was very good, I like a Pittsburgh burn or something like that and it was perfect burnt on the outside and bloody on the inside.

We went last night for a family dinner with our two boys(7&4). We have been to Steak & Stein once before many years ago, and were not thrilled with the service or the food, however it is now under new management so we figured we would give it a try again. Arriving around 5:30 pm on a Sat night, there was a 10 minute wait. Hostess was very nice and offered to sit us in the bar area. Right after we grabbed a table, the bar manager came over and got us drinks. Our 4 year old asked for lemonade, and the manager made a joke about going back and making it just for him. When he came back with our drinks, the lemonade looked rather homemade(lots of lemons, water and some sugar). We honestly think he made it just for our son. Service at the bar was very prompt and well done. Apparently the lemonade was really good too, according to our son. After our quick stop at the bar, it started going downhill. The atmosphere is still a rather dark-ish setting(Ok by us), but the tables seemed jumbled together. Waiters and bus staff were squeezing between our table and the folks behind us. There were plenty of tables, but the table arrangement seemed very haphazard and not well thought out. We waited a rather long period of time to be waited on, and placed our order(I ordered Ribeye, but they were out, so I got the T-Bone instead), my wife ordered the Prime Rib(queen cut), and we ordered two well-done cheese burgers for the boys). We ate bread while we waited for our food. The bread was cold and seemed store bought. The butter was cold and solid as a rock so it destroyed the cheap bread. My wife was very disappointed they had no salad bar. The salads that came out were very boring(as another noted, just large cuts of tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce was basically it). The salad was fresh though, and tasted ok. Our waiter did not come around very often, even though it was not super busy. It took about 15 – 20 minutes to get our food. The kids burgers came out like hockey pucks(my wife ordered them well-done to be safe for the kids, so it was somewhat expected, but they did come out more than well-done). They also forgot the cheese, so the server came back with a few slices of cold cheese to put on top. My steak(the T-Bone) came out very plain, but it tasted good. Later in the meal, I noticed that it was getting more rare(it was dark in the restaurant, so hard to see the color of the meat). Turns out most of it was very rare. Unfortunately I ate most of the steak already. I was not going to complain(my fault for not noticing), but my wife mentioned it to the hostess/manager? when she came by at the end of the meal. The hostess was very nice and offered a free dessert(slice of cheesecake). My wife’s steak was the only meal really cooked to order and she was happy. I also noticed that they had no seasonings or condiments on the tables. If you wanted steak sauce, ketchup or otherwise I guess you would have to ask for it and possibly wait a long time for the service staff to return with it. The good: — Awesome service at the bar — Offered a free slice of cheesecake to comp for under-cooked steak The Ok: — Salad was very plain — Bread was ok. Nothing nice or special. It was not warm, and seemed more store bought. — Baked potato was good, if you could get over the lack of presentation The ugly: — No salad bar — Butter was rock solid for our bread — Their idea of a loaded baked potato is a potato wrapped in tin-foil on your plate(and two plastic dishes of a little sour cream and butter on your plate) In closing, the management staff(bar tender, hostess?) seemed to care and was offering the best service they could. The rest of the waiting staff seemed very green and slow. Based on how the food came out, it appears the kitchen staff may be very green as well. Hopefully the steak house, while currently under new management, can notice these flaws quickly and work to address them. Otherwise we will not return for a few more years, until it is under new management again, to test it out.

No cars in the parking lot. That should have been our first clue. Overcooked calamari. Stuffed shrimp was below ordinary. My garlic encrusted steak was the only edible dish. $ 82 and we had no alcohol. Go to Longhorne instead.

Well, they didn’t change much from the old instantiation of this restuarant — I don’t know if people will think that good or bad. They put on table cloths and raised all prices by $ 2 I myself regretted their dropping chopped steak. It’s kind of my go to dish at a steakhouse, but that’s me. I love mushroom gravy Salad bar remains basic — lettuce, beets, carrots, cukes. Okay, stuffed grape leaves were a little out of the ordinary. Olive oil on a dish instead of butter with your bread = stupid at a restaurant like this. Shrimp scampi = tasty but why in the world would you serve it w/potato and not pasta? NY Strip — pretty darned good for the price. In fact, kind of one of the better ones i’ve had that’s less than $ 40 and more than $ 15

Gone are the days of Bantas Steak & Stein. The new management has removed the fresh baked pumpernickel bread and the infamous cheese soup. The prices have risen, but the quality of food and service did not. Our waitress was inept. After drinking tap water throughout the meal, she then brought us bottled water because the tap water in Newburgh was deemed unsafe to drink. She said this was something that happens often. Really?! The seafood was rubbery. The salad bar was not impressive. The onion flowers couldn’t hold a candle to the ones at Outback Steakhouse. Those need to be removed from the menu. The kids meals were adult sized meals at adult prices. The choice on ice cream was vanilla or vanilla. The bar tender was sure what a Tom Collins was or what sour meant. The restrooms had no changing tables leaving me no option to drop trowel in the middle of the restaurant and change this diaper. My infant needed to be changed too. –jk(but really, no changing tables) If you have a need to stop by here, check your temperature and call your doctor. You’re probably getting a slight case of dementia. Steak & Stein is off the list of places to eat.

The décor is very old fashioned but clean and nice. The menu is standard steakhouse fare. We got the swordfish and a NY Strip. The swordfish was PERFECT. Cooked just right, deliciously prepared with lemon pepper, and the garlic mashed potatoes were very garlicky and delicious. I thought my NY Strip was overcooked a little. I got medium rare and it was more light pink than red. I’d rather have them undercook it so I can send it back for more cooking… instead of overcooking so I’d have to send it back and start over. I ate it anyway but it wasn’t that great. The salad bar was very basic. I felt like they should have put out a larger variety of veggies/salads/etc. to compliment the quality of the entrees. Our server was sweet but busy taking care of a couple of large parties so she didn’t stop by to check on us very often. We had empty drinks for about 10 minutes. I’d still consider it a good choice for a nice dinner in Newburgh.

Ok so to start this is based on a meal from this month, under the new ownership. How can I put this nicely… Well I can’t. It was that bad. I was scared to eat within 5 minutes of arriving. The hallway and restroom stink like mold and mildew, and they know this because of the 4 potpourri baskets all over. I was with a group so I had no choice but to stay. I couldn’t help but feel like I was on an episode of Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen nightmares the whole time. The décor is identical to when it closed, there is some fresh paint and lighting but it’s the same as it always was. If you haven’t been there then what I’m talking about is dark wood, very old school but not in a good way, like in a left behind way. Then you have the decorations above the salad bar, I mean literally the restaurant is decorated with bottles of sweet baby rays still plastic wrapped together in the food service pack, besides that was franks red hot in the food service pack and then some kraft salad dressing, I hope I am making my point. Don’t decorate your restaurant with this crap, I don’t want to eat it, I don’t want to see it displayed. Ok so now on to the food. 7 diners including myself. We had ny strip, fatty and old tasting, dry for medium and overpriced at 24 dollars, scallops that were at best frozen and at worst were skate being passed off as a scallop. Then our poor vegetarian had only one option being the same pasta that’s been horrible for years, another diner had blackened chicken that was barely seasoned, the steak and chicken combo was edible but ordering the steak«smothered» resulted in a side of onions and bacon but no cheeses as advertised and it was not on the steak. I could keep going but everything was dismal at best. The salad bar was all nasty and pre made, the Mac salad was disgusting, there were no bacon bits to break up the soggy texture. The dressings not home made either. I would have preferred the salad bar at a supermarket to this. Honestly it makes me sad to write this review, I grew up here and always looked forward to eating here growing up but that was 15 years ago and the food was better then, alot better. I wanted nothing more than tong back here and be wowed but it just didn’t happen. If anyone that care reads this, it’s not over yet but using the same menu as 2 years ago when the restaurant closed was a bad move. Serving apps over wilty iceberg lettuce is a worse move. Buying pre made is unforgivable. Hire a chef with some passion not cooks that are copying a sad and tired menu and this place might still have a shot. Worry about making good food and you might actually save this place, keep going the same way and well, the locals have seen how this story ends.
