UYE-Milkfish: Find your Inner Filipino

I’ve been debating for about a week as to what should be my 1200^th review. And I decided that I would make this review for my own UYE the milestone.
I had been chatting with Steve (and Michelle) about going to this restaurant for awhile. And we finally decided a UYE was the way to go and since when we went Milkfish was only open on Sundays our options were narrowed for us.
We were treated beautifully by the staff and chef. I loved that our food came out family style. And they took extra good care of me as the only non-​meat eater in the group. The chef is very aware of a diner’s needs for a special diet and I was really appreciative of her care.
I really can’t wait to go back AND since the restaurant they were popping up in has now closed it’s doors, Milkfish has added Saturday dinner service in addition to 10 hour day on Sunday. Finally the reason for making this my 1200^th review… my lunch companions were AWESOME. I loved hanging out with all of you and it was great to share a leisurely meal while getting schooled on the nuances of the dishes (especially by Alvin who released his inner food nerd for us all).

Some of the best Unilocalers were at this event so yes it was a wonderful dinner. I have to give props to Jen for organizing this event and suggesting a cuisine no one thinks about in this city. I also loved the service and hospitality shown to us.
For our appetizers we got five different choices. They then showered us with not one but three trays of appetizers!
Next we choose an assortment of entrees to share:
–The popular Filipino dish Adobo (which is chicken or pork)
–Pancit (Filipino version of Chow Mein)
–Kare-​Kare (a stew in peanut sauce served with oxtail and vegetables)
–Pinakbet (a mixed veggie dish)
–Sisig
We also got garlic rice which was very tasty! Unfortunately I couldn’t stay for dessert but I heard they served cassava.
Filipino cuisine is very different. It will test your palate. Have you ever heard of Bagoong? Well it is used frequently in Filipino cuisine.
I will be back at Milkfish because I enjoyed the food and service! Plus I want to try their Halo-​Halo which is the Philippines version of a snoball.

What a lovely UYE! I’m so happy that I could make this event. Before the event I had never had Filipino food and this was such a great way to experience it. The family that runs Milkfish (and it is really family run) were so awesome to our group, you couldn’t help but fall in love with them. They sent everything out family-​style so that we could try a big chunk of the menu that afternoon. Everything was so fresh and delicious. The appetizers gave us a delicious fried jolt to start our meal off and the entrees that followed were full of veggies, noodles, shrimp, oxtail, and chicken. The sauces were so flavorful! I really enjoyed the Kare-​Kare (oxtail) and the Chicken Adobo. Putting either one of those dishes over the garlic fried rice made me a happy camper. It was such an enjoyable afternoon listening to the family traditions of Michelle and Alvin as well. I loved their enthusiasm towards their culture and their help in picking out our meal. Then dessert comes out with tasty cassava cake and a delicious fried banana/​jackfruit treat. I was so full and happy by the end of the afternoon. Both the food and the people of Milkfish will have me coming back soon! I can’t wait until they get a permanent home. But for now, make sure you check them out at a Mano on Sundays!

Adobo. Pancit. Kare-​Kare. Turon. Garlic rice. Ahhhhhh yes!!! Food. Folks. And Fun.
This pop-​up restaurant, soon to be have a permanent location, was a wonderful treat. Not only did we have authentic filipino food prepared by the bestEST chef, but we also got tales of filipino youth & traditions. I was all the more excited to have my 1^st filipino food experience prepared by an authentic filipino chef!!! I’ve been validated!!!
The ambience of the restaurant is refreshing. The décor is Cali style, modern & simplistic, but no less elegant.
The service rendered by milkfish employees is remarkable. For a table of 8, they were very attentive. They were more present than not.
We ate family style & truly, there was plenty of food left over… (I love leftovers).
I have plans to return in the very near future.

This was a great way to enjoy Filipino food in its best way — shared family style. The Unilocal crew was able to enjoy some great fried nibbles before the mains in thick sauces. everything over a bed of garlic fried rice, yes please! thanks to this preview, I’ll be back for my Sunday tosilog fix!
