Mikawa Japanese & Korean Modern

Had a wonderful lunch here! Service was warm and fast. The food was delicious and fresh. The Bibambap with spicy chicken was wonderful — spicy but not too hot, and very well seasoned. Will definitely go back!

Great Japanese food for the price. Had two outstanding large rolls. Service was friendly, timely, and they brought us a few smaller dishes compliments of the house. We will go back soon.

I work in the area and a group of us decided to try their lunch special. We each ordered the 2 roll combo. The order was called in and we picked it up very quickly. There were four of us ordering, everything was fresh and delicious. I ordered the spicy salmon and the tuna cucumber rolls. The meal comes with a choice of soup or salad. The salad comes with a yummy ginger dressing on the side. They also packed chopped sticks and soy sauce packets along with plastic forks and spoons. I see many sushi lunches in my future. Thanks.

Got this for first time. The beef negimaki was raw and all day. The vegetable dumplings were ok but not like the ones I get in other Japanese restaurants. The brown rice was stuck together and over cooked. Only thing I liked wAs the ginger dressing. $ 30 wasted

This place wasn’t good during today’s visit … I read prior reviews before entering, however, I know everyone’s experience is pretty individualized. A friend and myself decided go give it a whirl today after studying…
Ugh! I hate when I get bad sushi! Nothing upsets me more. I think it’s bc I’ve had it so many places and it’s always pretty amazing that when I get it and it sucks which is rare… it really pisses me off.
Anyway, rewind for a sec.
Walk in here place is cute. Seemed to be busy which can be a good sign. We were seated quick and placed out orders just as quick … Wrong orders, I hate that… I wanted to sushi lunch which was 6 pieces and a roll. I wanted a spicy salmon roll and got a spicy tuna roll instead. GROSS. I’m pretty sure they mashed up the tuna and stuffed it in the soy wrap like I had requested … It was mushy and smelly… And I took a bite of tuna sushi which seemed a little darker and weird looking like it was sitting out… I couldn’t even bite through it! I promptly sent it back and literally almost threw up oh my god, horrible.
I really despise giving crappy reviews. I would rather not review the place but honestly they need to get their act together. That tuna was damn right horrible and to top it off our waitress was a total ass. She was so anxious and running around like she couldn’t handle it, it was pissing us off and making us really uneasy…
Just a horrible visit we had. I will not be returning. Next time I’ll be sure to hit up chef wangs instead.

Came here a couple of times by myself being that i work right there and was craving sushi. this place is expensive, the food is good but worth the price they charges. the portions arent too big, the service is ok and thats why im taking a star off. its so hard to get someones attention.
rolls are good, kani salad is bomb. the chicken teriyaki bento box is super fab, i would rather order it out than ever sit down here ever again though.

A smallish, new restaurant in the New Hyde Park/​Lake Success area. I had a pretty good dining experience at Mikawa. This was the first time I’ve seen a restaurant with a Japanese/​Korean food combo in Long Island, which is only a good thing. The menu had a really large selection of Japanese food, from the typical sushi combos and teriyaki, but also things that I rarely see in Japanese places, like sukiyaki and okonomiyaki (!) The menu also had pictures of the special sushi rolls, which is definitely helpful. Although I didn’t have dessert, the dessert menu looked pretty appetizing as well, with the typical fried ice cream, but also patbingsu (shaved ice) and mochi.
The two special sushi rolls we ordered to share, the calamari and Rolls Royce rolls, were excellent. Both presentation wise and taste wise, they were great. I really liked the Rolls Royce roll. It was shrimp tempura, eel, and spicy crab with crunch flavor all around. Really pretty, and the sauce was good too. My entrée was the sushi and sashimi combo, (which I order everywhere, because reasons) and the fish was fresh. Again, really nice on the presentation, and quite a bit of food for the meal. One thing I noticed was that either the rice or fish had a little bit of a sweet taste to it, which I thought made it better. That sweetness may be a negative for others, though. The one Korean dish that we ordered, the hot stone bulgogi, was a big serving for an over rice dish, and definitely hot. It came with clear noodles as well. It tasted decent, definitely not on par with a dedicated KBBQ restaurant, but good for a place where the Korean food may be an afterthought for diners. Sukiyaki was tender, and there also was quite a bit in the soup to go with it. The servings were very generous for all of the entrees.
Overall, I really liked the menu selection for Mikawa. Definitely lots of interesting special rolls and things that aren’t usually on Japanese menus. Having a Korean menu is definitely a plus as well, just for the options alone. At first, the service was a bit slow, but was more attentive as the meal went on. It’s a small space, but I definitely see it filling up, especially with the hospital and other offices nearby. From reading other reviews, I guess the way to go is get the Japanese food, and maybe not the Korean. I also noticed that they had several beers on tap, which is cool for some. I enjoyed the «chill/​modern» décor and of course, the meal and its presentation was very good. Different from the old Kiss’o, with a more modern feel. I’m definitely open to trying more on the menu

I am still confused from eating in this place that it took quite a while for me to gather my thoughts before putting up this review.
After eating here, my friends and I all agreed: it was not great. In any shape or form.
This restaurant struggles to be successful in two very different genres of food, and it sadly fails to even achieve mediocrity in either.
The warning sign: the soy sauce that they gave us with the sushi was sweet.
I mean, seriously — from each bottle they brought to the table, it was very very sweet.
I don’t know how this ever happens (in any restaurant) — I hope it’s a terrible mistake on some poor waiter’s part — but oh my goodness, it made the subpar sushi inedible.
The korean dishes (there were about 6 that came out in the set that we had) were all below average, and our party learned our lesson never to have korean food east of queens.
The ddukbokki was poorly seasoned where it was really spicy but bland (how does this happen?)
The dakdoritang (chicken stew) contained bland chicken
The bulgogi was just too sweet.
The nengmyun was fine, but we had to flag down the waiter to bring the vinegar so that it would be edible. Any korean restaurant that offers it always bring vinegar for the guest to season. It’s just common sense.
The seafood pajun (scallion pancakes), unseasoned.
The galbijjim was… again, too sweet. I think the kitchen likes their beef overly sweet.
My friend, who had the audacity to order something else ordered the beef teriyaki.
His exact words after eating some of it were: «I wouldn’t recommend it.»
I wouldn’t recommend this place either.

I just got here and im so obsessed with the décor. We got sit in one of the back rooms which you have to take your shoes off. You are sitting in a lowered platform and there is a big table in the middle. It was very cozy and had a great authentic feel. I ordered the chicken bento box and it was good. It was a little pricy but well worth it. I also had the Japanese soda which i love. I was very happy with my meal. I think they changed owners or something because everything seemed new and it was more modern. That was a great change!

From the ashes of the former Japanese eatery, Kisso, rises Mikawa. There’s been a tiny bit of renovation but the layout remains the same. The menu’s also been renovated to include Korean offerings like bulgogi and sundoboo.
We came for lunch and the service was quick. Sushi lunch was decent and tasted good although maybe a bit small for 15 bucks. Spicy chicken on rice was good albeit a bit spicier then one would think. Overall a vast improvement over the prior establishment and a decent choice for Japanese in the area.

Came here for a quick lunch with a friend after some shopping! Good service! The sushi was nothing too special but came at a great lunch special price!

One odd and anomalous experience aside, I am happy to have this place take over after Kiss’O abandoned me. Au courant décor, fresh fish, a good combo of Japanese and Korean cuisine.
Nice new staff, a lone relic from the past (lookin’ at you, Tang) and a nice drink selection.
If you’re in a rush, grab one of the stock rolls from their fridge up front. If you have the time, sit for the meal.
My only complaint is they don’t cook the tuna, and they don’t have egg rolls. =]]

Second time coming here. Second time being amazed.
They have a wide selection of Japanese cuisine (specialty rolls, sashimi, teriyaki, and even hibachi style eats) and also Korean cuisine (stews, rice bowls, and many many others).
The rolls are all hand crafted by a chef at the sushi bar and the ingredients used all seem and taste fresh.
They also have a wide variety of alcohols ranging from beer to wine and liquor. For beers they have draft beers from Korea, Japan, and domestic such as Hite (Korean), Sapporo (Japanese), Coors lite, and Bluemoon. Also red and white wines, Korean liquor such as soju and makgeoli and also Japanese rice wine saki.
The servers are very friendly and the place has a very nice ambiance. Also they have a lot of space and also private rooms for party’s.
I would personally recommend the spicy pork over rice (je took bokkeum) and really any rolls and if you plan a saki bombing party here it will be a good time.

Always go for the same thing and it never disappoints. Today I brought a few coworkers and they loved it!

Food was really good. The jap chae was delicious and a must get whenever I come back. I ordered the bolgogi over rice and it was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the chicken and scallop hibachi with fried rice which was really good as well. Red bean ice cream is a must try! It’s my favorite. Don’t let «red bean» scare you. The service could be better as we had to track down someone most of the time even thought it wasn’t too busy but it wasn’t too bad to make me not want to come back. Next time I will try the bibimbap!

I give this 3 ½ stars for service and four for the food and décor.
My taste buds are Japanese (n Italian) but I’m part Korean so I was happy for this fusion!!!
Let’s start décor! I love how clean everything was and the modern Asian colors and calming fountain at the entrance. The music was modern and just at the right level to hear it and talk. The bathrooms were super clean and the woman’s had an awesome bathroom mirror!!! I passed the kitchen and looked in and it was very clean and organized. Fresh smells as it should be when just opening.
The happy hour had great options of appetizers and drinks! I love lychee and totally recommend the lychee soju!!! The steamed dumplings were perfect also.
The fusion of Japanese and Korean is very rare especially on Long Island! The Korean part of the menu had writing in Korean as well which was a good sign. I had bibinbap which was perfect! It wasn’t grizzly and perfectly cooked. Had to get a roll to check out the fish!!! So opted for a lobster special roll with brown rice and wanted more and more!
The service fell a bit short. We had more than one server and one forgot our waters. The other wasn’t sure of the drink I ordered so I think they need to iron out the service end. But I will definitely be back.

Mikawa was a delightful surprise. The sushi is ridiculously fresh. The bimpimbap is a must try but be careful as the plates come out sizzling hot (as they should). Would definitely come back as regular !!!

Mikawa used to be a fantastic authentic Japanese restaurant called Kiss’o before being taken over by new management. Now, it’s a low-​grade Korean fusion spot. The bulgogi was dry, the miso soup is quite obviously made from those «just add water» packets, and all you can taste in their egg rolls is oil. Even their tempura is overly greasy, I couldn’t bring myself to eat more than one piece. Their scallion pancakes were super oily, too. I felt bad for our waitress because she tripped and dropped a whole platter of our salads on the floor, but we never received new servings of them.
And while we’re on the subject, the food comes out painfully slow. Yes, we were a large group of twelve. But they kept forgetting orders, and some people in our party did not receive theirs for well over an hour. As an «apology» they initially offered everyone free soda for the rest of the night, which was a bit odd since none of us ordered or drink soda. Then they came out and surprised us with a sizzling spicy chicken dish on the house — far after everyone had already finished eating and was already full. Not understanding the logic in that, we suggested receiving free ice cream instead and they reluctantly agreed. Cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone, bring your business elsewhere.

I can’t say much about authenticity since I’m neither Japanese nor Korean, but the food was pretty decent in my opinion. Ordered some sushi… and it tasted like sushi. I’ll eat anything if it’s decent. At the end of the day, I’m satisfied with the experience.
