Bust Weston held a pig roast last weekend with sales of tickets to support their non-profit organization that produces antique apples for sale at local farm markets. I pre-purchased tickets for 8 people two weeks before the event and saw online that they eventually sold-out days before the event was to take place. The fliers said the event was from Noon-5p so we planned on going mid-day. Upon arrival we picked up tickets from will-call and proceeded to check out the food. There was literally no food and no plates. The catering folks were closing up shop for the day. Really an overall disappointment and there were many others on the will-call list that hadn’t picked up their tickets yet. It seems pretty simple that if you pre-sell X tickets you’d have enough food for X people. This event had all the makings for a great day — food, drink, music and farm tours. I’m not sure if this is a yearly event or what but I’d be hesitant to attend again.

Cox’s Orange Pippin! Calville Blanc d’Hiver! The Weston family has focused on smaller quantities of a larger variety of rare apples. This is just a fantastic, small, specialty apple orchard; they have a truly amazing selection of heirloom apples. Popular favorites like the two I list above are present, but so too are more obscure varieties like the German, Zaubergau Reinette. Yup, the orchard offers an amazing variety of the most hard to find apples for eating, cellaring and cooking. Open to the public during apple season on Sunday’s, they have a space in their barn where their in-season apples are setout for your shopping. You may also find their apples at a number of farmers markets and in desserts in Milwaukee and Madison’s best restaurants. If you are at all interested in enjoying apples that offer much more complex flavors than the abomination that is red delicious, this would be the perfect place to start!
