Grimey’s New & Preloved Music

I had a great experience here at Grimey’s which is weird because it wasn’t so great at Grimey’s Too. The store has a really cool vibe and the employees were very helpful. The guy was really friendly was ready to answer any question that I had. I got my first vinyl here (J Dilla — Donuts).

Awesome store with a lot to offer. There is extra parking around the back of the store and the whole place was really cool! The books and used music side is connected to the café with good coffees too.

We weren’t planning on stopping in here on our way to pick up coffee, but I was intrigued by the outside. I’m so glad we stopped in! My sister and I love looking through vinyl and I was so stoked to see that they had a Sleater-​Kinney section. When my sister and I finally decided which one we wanted the clerk chatted with us about their recent return from hiatus and their live shows. It was nice to chat with someone knowledgeable. As tourists, we were interested in seeing some live music and they were helpful in giving us suggestions for our time in Nashville. Overall, I would come back and I recommend it!

Pretty good selection. It’s pretty much your typical Nashville country stuff along with some indie and punk, and the biggest metal selection I have seen in Nashville and Memphis. I was able to pick up Dopesmoker by Sleep and MCoC by 1349 (both on vinyl) at very fair prices. Grimeys Too is also right next door and is a worth a look too.

The selection is pretty good although light on the metal music and they don’t know how to spell Mastodon.
But either way, they’re a good spot and a definite must-​try.
I favored the used side of the two (rather than the larger, new music side) but both were worth the time!

Grimey’s has shifted all of their used merchandise next door to «Grimey’s Too» (listed on here as «Grimey’s» w/​o the «New & Preloved» tag). The prices over there on used vinyl, CD, and books are fair and there are gems to be found for sure. Here at the original store, they’re stuffed to the max with new and sealed vinyl and with vinyl bigger every year with not only the old audiophiles and collectors but a whole growing group of younger music fans, this is a great Nashville spot to pick up quality vinyl at a fair price in person with real clerks surrounded by your fellow music fans. I will say that the new vinyl is pricey; for brand new releases they are competitive and you obviously cut out the shipping price from any online retailer, but some of the catalog titles will run you a pretty penny. Of course, a lot of this stuff isn’t cheap anywhere and it’s better than haggling and waiting five days on eBay to then miss out by a 25 cent bid anyway. Great old-​school record store atmosphere and knowledgeable sales crew. I saw maybe 70 percent of the newer titles from my wish list while perusing there last month which isn’t bad.

This is one of my favorite local record store. They have a vast selection of new music, and next door at their «too» store they have an abundance of «preloved» music. They supply their consumers with all formats: cd, vinyl, cassettes. But what really makes them stand out is they do a lot of activities to bring artists into the stores and make them accessible to their patrons. They have many release shows and after hours «The Basement» located obviously beneath the store is a cozy little live music bar to catch a local artist performance. This is a special kind of record store that I recommend to anyone that stops in Nashville… yes we do have other records stores than Third Man. This place is like going into the Renaissance for music. This place holds a special place in my heart just because it’s so cool.

I love that Grimey’s is one of the 4 physical locations you can purchase tickets for shows at Cannery and Mercy Lounge. Screw that ridiculous online fee. It’s only $ 2 at Grimey’s. But tickets are cash only. Customer service is friendly and honestly you just feel «hip» being in there. (Or at least I did!) The store is slightly compact but organized well. Such a wide, random, variety of music and merchandise. I look forward to going back in the next few weeks to browse for some cool vinyl to give my DJ boyfriend for Christmas.

not sure why Grimey’s is considered a great place to buy CDs and vinyl. the selection has never been that great. I lived in nashvegas for 9 years and recently stopped in while my wife and I were making a cross-​country move (we moved from Nashville 5 years ago).
this time, as in times in years past, the selection was underwhelming. the staff was cool enough. in the 40 minutes I was there I was asked 3 times if they could help. I’m the type who likes to browse, so selection is key for me. why have them order something when I can do that myself online?
there is definitely that nashville hipster music snob vibe in Grimey’s. but if you’re looking for a place to buy music in music city, try McKay’s or Great Escape instead.

Grimey’s hosted the coolest record store day event this year. Needtobreathe blew me away. Besides the free live performances they had a half dozen or so food trucks including Jeni’s ice cream, further proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Thank you, Grimey’s.

I walked up to the counter and I asked if they had «I just called to say I loved you» … You know… For my daughters birthday… I was then accosted by a rather boisterous man who asked me if my daughter was in a coma and kicked me out.
All of this to say, none of this happened. This place is safe to be a fan of everything from the Smiths to Bruce Springsteen. Except nickelback… F#%@ that band…

Went in here looking for classic rock and country. Came out empty handed. I had heard this was the go-​to place for vinyl by acquaintances, but when no one greeted me or even asked if I needed help I knew it was a bad sign. I was scrambling around that place for 15 minutes before I asked for help.
It was my first time there so I was a bit overwhelmed and it took me a minute to understand how they’re organized – after all they’re super cramped.
Asking one of the employees if they had Johnny Cash and being looked at like I was a zombie, I realized this wasn’t the place for me. After interviewing my friends, I realized Grimeys is a good place for people who know nothing about vinyl. This place is chock-​full-​of obscure bands and local bands. Now, hey it’s cool they’re supporting local bands; that’s always a good thing but when I can’t find the classics – Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Elvis (they had only two of his), and Cash, we got problems!
This place was waaaaaay too pretentious for me. Waaay overrated. I’ll stick to the Great Escape.

This place is pretty cool. I’m kind of surprised about the lack of hip hop, but they did happen to have at least one Atmosphere album in the new section. This place is cheaper than Phonolux, pretty much across the board, but quite a bit of it has been played a lot more, too, but still, for the same album in the same shape, you’re probably going to pay quite a bit less here. I’ll be back.

Great record store. Nice selection of new vinyl and a good local section too. Friendly people working there (being from the North, I love being greeted with a «Hey, y’all» or «how y’all doin’? It’s great).
Overall great selection of vinyl. I wish I had had more money, at one point I had about 5 records in my hands. Great little store. If you’re in Nashville, make sure you stop in.

I can’t say good enough things about this place. I had just moved to Nashville and I was in need of a good record store. Grimey’s to the rescue. I pulled up at opening hours because I heard it can get a bit crowded. I walked in and was amazed at the selection they have. Not only do they have countless records, but they have box collections as well — which as a vinyl extremist — I can appreciate although my wallet… not so much.
You know how you kind of dread going to buy CDs at places like Best Buy or FYE (when we used to buy CDs)? Because all the selections aren’t anywhere in the alphabetized location they should be? Not at Grimey’s. I was expecting to have to shuffle through a longer amount of time because things were probably unorganized but I was surprised. They keep everything well stocked and well organized.
I spent about $ 300 here. I’m not kidding. They literally have everything you possibly could want and I just couldn’t choose what not to buy.

Definitely an awesome and genuine record store! I can find some of the rarest, most foreign artist names on their rack.

I think I am jaded, living in a town with several good record stores. I don’t get the love for this place. They have a nice selection of new records but their used («pre-​loved», I do like that) selection was very limited and, since all the records were mixed together by artists, it was hard to know what was used and what wasn’t. Apparently, the used records are open. The stickers didn’t even say «used». If that is the case, I saw very few. Now, maybe that is because they have a lot of customers and so their used inventory never stays very big. But, for the out of town visitor, hoping to browse for a while, it was a letdown.

I have to admit something… I don’t buy physical copies of music. like. ever. I have become an avid Amazon user and typically purchase and download everything to my computer online, but visiting Grimey’s made me long for the days of anxiously awaiting the release of a CD and buying it at the store.
They have a HUGE selection of vinyl and CD’s, and offer used and new items as well as local artists albums. It honestly feels as if you are going back to a different time when you step through the doors.
The staff is so friendly and helpful, and they have a solid Third Man Records section where transplant (and my future husband) Jack White creates a wide variety of vinyl.
But my favorite part of this lovely store is that they offer in store performances with artists from all over and they have a music venue (The Basement) below the store. Plus if you stop in for an in store performance, they’ll give you a free beer!
Grimey’s is just another reason to love Nashville and appreciate how this city respects music on all levels.

I’m a fan. The only problem with Grimey’s is that it is more than half way across the country from me. It is large but not so big you are overwhelmed once inside. It has all the necessary flair of a brick and mortar record shop with the music memorabilia, and huge selection to browse through.
When we came through here it was cool because we were attending an event down below the shop in a tiny music venue that rocks for down home goodness with solid drinks, no frills, and enough space to shake a tail feather.
I love the ability to listen, shop, and dance all in one space. :) Life doesn’t get much better than that.

Such a cool little place. I wish places like this still existed and thrived because, they should. Where else do you find new, old, rare, interesting, different records? Reminds me of being a kid, wandering the aisles looking for something good. This place is awesome.
