In-Shape: Napa

Brand new busy gym and they only have 4 stationary bikes! Seriously only FOUR and they of course are constantly being used.
Second month here still only two regular bikes.

Ok I backed down my review because now 2 days in a row I have seen a man come out of the men’s locker room (yesterday) in his towel to get an additional towel. And today a member came out of the men’s locker room in his underwear to get a towel. Now either the gym needs to move the towels Into the locker room or they need to tell the members to bring their own. But either way I DON’T WANT TO SEE SOME STRANGE GUY IN THE COMMON ARE IN HIS UNDERWEAR or NAKED with a towel wrapped around him. It’s very inappropriate! And given all the staff someone from the club should handle this behavior!
I have to say I am not a fan of big «pretty“gyms. I like to go in and do my workout and leave. I don’t need the kids club (which they have and seems like a nice addition) and all the fancy classes for things I have never heard of. But a few yoga classes and I am happy. All that being said this is a very nice and clean gym! One indoor and one outdoor pool which I guess is good to have and the staff seems very nice. The equipment for the most part is technogym which is awesome equipment! So love it here!
Is all the space within the gym used perfectly. No but I am not an architect and I don’t own the gym so I am not paying their rent so let them do as they wish! But the staff is plentiful but could be a little better trained on what their classes provide. And while we were working out they were vacuuming and cleaning machines so good job! Clean is key! And above all once we signed in we don’t feel hustled by the trainers!!! Love being left alone to just work out!

Also Christian is awesome as well. A really solid staff.

We have been members for about 6 weeks now. The positives are the instructors are great and that’s were it ends. Front desk staff is rude and acts like it is a bother to even check you in let alone answer any questions. It is advertised the indoor pool is heated to 85. It is not and too someone with arthritis this is a HUGE issue. The locker rooms are disgusting. Bring your own lock, toilets overflowing, human feces in showers, used towels lying everywhere, just overall unsanitary. Which brings me to the biggest of all issues. This club was built right next door too the homeless shelter so there is a large homeless presence both in and around the health club. This particular In Shape location is 4 times more expensive than any other In Shape club. Save yourself some money and join one of the other local non corporate gyms in the area.

Trying to get in contact with corporate is a nightmare! You’d think they’d want the business!

As with all new gyms, the excitement of the newness lasts for a month or so and then you have a chance to compare it to wherever you last were to determine if you made the right move. For me, the move from Exertec to this particular In Shape was worth it but that’s not to say I don’t see issues on the horizon.
Facility-​4 of 5 stars. Lots of space so things don’t seem crowded. Locker rooms are well thought out and pool areas are well done. The entry area is a big waste of space as they went for that «let’s all hang out in the lobby» design which never happens and the space could’ve been better utilized with a larger free weight room. They do seem to have an issue keeping the place cleaned up. Always dust bunnies and pebbles everywhere on the floor. It’s not fun to do stretches and have pebbles puncture your skin.
Equipment-​Cardio-​3 of 5 stars. Loads of differing types of treadmills, elliptical machines, stair machines etc., so from a variety standpoint it’s great. However, some of them aren’t new models. I assume some they purchased were at reduced price but I’d expect a brand new facility to have the latest equipment. Case in point, some of the treadmills have an iPhone charger built in that utilize the connection from the I Phone 4!!! Also, many of the treadmills have built in TV’s that don’t work or they have only two channels that appear, neither of which tune into anything. I even asked the equipment maintenance guy about why the treadmills weren’t showing all the channels and he said it seemed the cables weren’t operating properly. That was over a week ago with no change. They have about 6 very nice large screen TV’s that you plug your headphones into to view all the major stations. That would be a nice thing except that they only have about 25% of the total cardio equipment facing them, most are NOT treadmills, and the two that are treadmills don’t have the ability to tune into the TV’s. Very, very poor planning on their part. I’ve also found out that the staff don’t know anything about the operation of the cardio equipment. One told me point blank that they aren’t trained to know. I asked who was there that could tell me and he said nobody. Seriously!!!
Weights and weight machines-​3 of 5 stars. Typical problem and one that Synergy also has. Weight room is too small. Not enough flat and incline benches and only one short fixed seat bench. To make matters worse they don’t have 2.5 lb increment weights, at least up to the 35 lb level and there doesn’t seem to be the staff availability to take the time to train members on putting weights back in their proper place. I take it upon myself to do it because it makes me so mad. They could at LEAST have some weight numbers on the racks that cradle the weights with the appropriate lb amounts so maybe, just maybe, some people would get the hint. Their selection of machines is excellent though and the layout is good.
Classes-​4 of 5. I haven’t taken any but have heard positive things from many members.
Trainers-4.5 of 5. This is where it seems they really excel. Trainers seem knowledgeable and interested and motivated. Impressive. I’m training with Konrad and he’s great. Would be nice to have some type of regular size massage like table where we could be stretched. They have the room. Some of the better gyms in big cities have a small area with four or five tables just for that purpose and the trainers use them constantly.
Staff-3.5 of 5. All very nice but an obvious lack of training that can only be attributed to either management of this specific club or a company policy. For a gym this large though staff seems almost non existent.
Overall-​3 of 5 stars. There was and still is so much potential. I owned and ran a personal training business for a decade and all this place needs is to show they are willing to listen to constructive criticism and make changes where they should be made. Staff should be engaging clients while they are on cardio equipment making sure they know how to operate them which builds longer lasting relationships and connects the staff to the client. Have someone in the weight room overseeing the weight etiquette and not afraid to say something when people aren’t following proper protocol. This place is large. They need someone cleaning all day, not just once at night or early in the morning. Move your cardio equipment around. Have the most popular equipment in front of your large TV’s. When you have equipment that has a built in TV make sure they work. For the managers, get out of your office and interact with the members. We pay your salary.

This is one of the best gyms that I have ever been a member of but I have just a few complaints. The first is that they don’t have any porters to keep the gym clean throughout the day, which they need because many of the other members do not re-​rack their weights or put their used towels in the one bin they have. At the very least, I’d like to see them make some sort of effort to educate members about gym etiquette (most gyms in Napa at least have signs reminding people to re-​rack). There also seems to be a shortage of towels but that’s slowly been getting better since they opened. Parking can also get a bit tight but if you’re coming in to workout then you really can’t complain about having to park far away and walk (unless of course its pouring down rain).
These details aside, this is a top-​notch gym that Napa has needed for a while now. I’ve been a member of fancier gyms like Equinox and this In-​Shape is just as nice at a fraction of the cost. There’s plenty of space and everything is brand new. Even when it gets really busy (weekdays 4:30 to 7ish) it never feels cramped. I really enjoy the spin classes and have had three different instructors now who all have their own unique style that I really enjoy. If you’re looking for a gym to join in Napa, In-​Shape really is the best value and I personally think it’s the nicest by far.

In Shape is new to Napa. I had a free week given me, which I used. I enjoyed myself there & was very pleased w/​the 29 minute circuit, on the 2^nd floor. That is fun and to the point. The only thing I noticed was that the floor was scattered w/​dust tumbleweeds under machines & blowing around
Then about 3weeks went by, and I received another 1week free pass. How lucky can a girl get?! This place is big, open, and full of light. They have lots of staff & trainers. In Shape also still has dust accumulated on the floors & floating around. I really was turned off.

I had an awesome experience signing up to a gym… words you normally don’t hear! Janet was very sweet and since joining I have enjoyed the classes that are available. Maily because she recommended by her herself trying them and explaining how they are. Then you have John he is so much fun and I have truly loved the classes I’ve taken with him, now he can kick your butt.
All in all a great gym, no contract, discounts for military and very friendly workers.

I really enjoy this gym! I love the fact that they don’t have a commitment for their membership, and that there are a few options for price! (You can sign up without an enrollment fee and pay a little more a month, or you can pay up to an $ 80 enrollment fee and pay less a month!)
I love the layout of the gym! I don’t like going to the gym and feeling like people are staring and watching me! They have TWO heated pools!
If your looking for a new home gym, this is it!

Classes are great and offer a wide range of options. Instructors are fabulous and make each workout fun.
Childcare is clean and staff is friendly. As a mom of two young kids this is very important and essential for me being able to workout. The play structure within the kids club is awesome. Kids aren’t just sitting idle they are having fun and being active. Karla in the kids club stands out as being always friendly, compassionate for the kids and always kind– exactly what you want of a professional working with children.

I’ve been going to the gym for a few weeks now and offer a few observations.
Positive — the instructors that I love are fantastic — world’s best yoga teacher (as reviewer Anne noted) and world’s best group-​x teacher (you both know who you are!). Really really great. The prices are reasonable. The gym itself is light, airy and laid out really well. There are lots of exercise options. I don’t feel claustrophobic (Healthquest — which feels sort of like a prison as you walk through to the back) or depressed (Exertec). I feel great and really happy to be in that physical space. They could use some hand-​held equipment upstairs (kettle bells, hand weights, balls).
Negatives
The locker room — I was pretty shocked when I visited the locker room. The locker, while well-​ventilated is TINY. Why anyone would spend big bucks for a beautiful gym and scrimp, in this neighborhood, in the locker room is really beyond comprehension. I expected a nice locker room, like Parkpoint in Sonoma (similar pricepoint) with full lockers with built-​in locks, spacious area with adequate benches, carpeted floor, lotion, hairspray, deodorant, combs, drinking water, and adequate towels, single gender jacuzzi. Umm and clean. At Inshape, you have to bring your own lock, the floors are cold cold concrete, there is a hair dryer or two, mouthwash, and q-​tips and that’s it. The towels are outside, so if you are nekkid already, oh well. The maintenance is not so great — towels overflowing, hair, etc. Other «luxury» clubs have a nearly full-​time staff presence in the locker room. The towels are very small and very thin. Seriously, grab two or three.
Corporate nature
In-​shape is a big chain — I had a complaint that went completely unanswered. I was promised call-​backs by the welcome center that never came. I sent an email to the address listed on a website and I addressed it to the CEO. I NEVER got an email response from anyone. As others have mentioned, it was impossible to find out how to contact the actual people in charge at corporate. When the club opened and I mentioned my issue, someone gave me a gym bag. Sort of a nice gesture, but not what I was after. It felt patronizing. When I had my complimentary training appointment, I received the corporate hard sell for personal training. I honestly felt as I did the one time I went to a time-​share pitch and the one time I bought a new car. The training was very good and fun, but the sales pitch, which went on for about 15 minutes, left me feeling slimy.
I’m wanting to give the club 4 stars since I enjoy the network membership and have been getting noticeably more fit while enjoying myself. Overall, I’m glad that my two favorite instructors are under one roof and the club is very pretty and spacious. Three stars means a-​ok and that’s how I experience this club. The locker room yuck and the corporate nature of the club notwithstanding, I expect to enjoy this club for a while into the future.

Update:
The gym is beautiful, great breadth of machines and options. The fees are reasonable.
New Pro: the district manager, Paul, is responsive and open to feedback on the issues at the gym (staffing, approach to customers, gym & work-​out experience). Given time, I am in hopes he can address some of the concerns.

I joined the gym prior to its opening for a number of reasons, including the broad offerings and competitive pricing compared to other comparable gyms in Napa. My main incentive to switch and join in-​shape was for the yoga classes taught by a favorite teacher.
While the gym is still new enough to be ironing out the kinks — and it’s been super busy and crowded due to the new year and promotions– I am hopeful that some improvements can be made. I do have some constructive feedback:
The yoga room is nice, but not big enough for the number of people attending. It’s more popular than in-​shape anticipated. It would also be nice if they’d invest a bit more in the equipment which is standard at most yoga studios (blocks, blankets, straps and in our case chairs). I’d like to see them add more classes– a Sunday class and maybe an advanced or intermediate level class. This might help with the crowding and benefit participants by offering more options.
I am also a swimmer and really appreciate the 2 laps pools. I haven’t had any problem getting a lap lane in the outdoor pool; the indoor pool has been pretty busy so I haven’t tried it yet. I do think it would be helpful to have designated laps swim times as there have been times when kids are jumping in and out unsupervised.
I agree with other reviewers that the staff is friendly and helpful. The place is open and bright and has some great features. I am concerned that the locker room is small and lacking bench space. Showers could definitely be cleaner (it’s new but already showing wear) and towels are tiny and often not enough available. The wet floor (not carpeted) is also a potential problem.
Parking is really bad and terrible during peak times. There are not enough spaces which may change if people drop out. However if the gym continues to be successful and grow — that will be a problem.
I’m glad that Napa gyms have a new competitor to offer another choice for those seeking a gym membership. I hope some of the above issues are resolved so that I will continue on at in-​shape. Right now the jury is still out.

This new gym is nice enough but it definitely needs to work out its kinks before a 5 star review.
The facilities in general are good, the pool is quite nice, as are the sauna and jacuzzi, there are tons of machines, and the classrooms are big enough not to feel cramped. I am not a big fan of the functional area because it doesn’t have olympic bars and weights and also no wall balls. When I signed up I was told these were going to be available because I like to do crossfit type workouts but obviously this was an (unnecessary) sales pitch.
The staff is super friendly and welcoming so that’s a huge plus.
The locker rooms are kind of cramped and the showers are really gross, I walked into a shower yesterday filled with hair and muddy water on the floor. Ewwww. The shower towels are big enough to wrap around an infant so definitely bring your own towel.
It does get crowded at night (which is normal) so be prepared to walk from almost the movie theater to the gym — although if you are going to the gym that shouldn’t be a big deal.

This is what I waswas waiting for… outdoor indoor swimming pool with big jacuzzi… love it!!! Locker room arrangement is little too tight though… they need to put more chair and locker… anyway I like this new gym so far!

Like the new gym, but please consider:
–water bottle filling stations (the drinking fountains are kind of spraying everywhere)
–towels UPSTAIRS, too
–tint the back window or get curtains to block sun in afternoon
–cubby for mats in the stretching area upstairs (also need a larger stretching area)
–more massage chairs
–more seating throughout, especially in the locker room
–clean locker room more frequently, especially shower area

Like the new gym. Super spacious and tons of equipment to use. Parking is a little crazy. The gym is brand new and tis the season for people to work on their new year’s resolution. It will die down. Love the little circuit area.
InShape — please consider:
–water bottle filling stations (upstairs and downstairs) the fountains are for drinking not water bottle filling!
–towels — more of them please! Set up a rack UPSTAIRS please! Nothing worse then being sweaty and no towel to grab.
–yoga mats in the stretching area upstairs
–more seating throughout, especially in the locker room. Not much bench area
–clean locker room more frequently, especially shower area please!
