I was born in Guatemala, Central America and migrated to the United States when I was 13 years old. I attended John Marshall High School, in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. It was there where I discovered my passion for psychology, during an Intro to Psych class during my senior year. I attended College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University in Northern California and earned a BS degree in Psychology. I subsequently earned a Masters and a Doctorate of Psychology degree from the California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles.
Upon graduating in the year 2000, I was hired by the Department of Justice to work for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) in a high security institution. During my tenure with the BOP I became a law-enforcement officer, a Hostage Negotiator and Hostage Negotiator Trainer, a Self-Defense Instructor, and a member of the Disturbance Control Team, among a number of other professional accomplishments.
