1927: Dr. I.M. Feldcamp formed Garfield Hospital with 24 beds

1966: Garfield expanded to 99 beds

1971: Hospital tower constructed

1973: 500 N. Garfield Ave. medical office building opened

1977: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit added

1984: OB Department expansion

1988: 600 N. Garfield Ave. medical office building opened

2002: New Emergency Department building opened

Recently, my mom burned her left forearm with a pot of boiling water. She was in so much pain that she almost passed out. I took her to the ER around midnight and didn’t wait too long. We were seen by Dr. Kwan, who spoke fluent Chinese with great bedside manner, he was really polite, professional and knowledgeable. He prescribed some pain medication and silverdene cream for her. The nurses were also gently wrapping the wounds for her. My mom felt much better after the visit and after applying the silverdene cream for two weeks, her arm is much better now as you can see from the pictures. After all, we had a very pleasant experience at Garfield medical center. Many thanks!

I hate that I have to rate a Medical Center so low… especially when they are there to help. Unfortunately, I’ve had one too many not-​too-​great experiences here at GMC. Here’s just my latest.
Although the staff in the ER rooms are very sweet, they seem understaffed and very flustered… and all over the place! We asked for a few things on different occasions 3 times before we actually got results.
My grandfather was placed in the ER for pneumonia. He was supposed to be there only 3 days and ended up there for 5 days. My aunt, who is the primary contact, lives in a different state and when they called her to let her know that he’s in the ER, they wouldn’t tell her what it was that he was in there for. I had to show up in person to finally get some answers.
One day, they called me one time and I was working so I missed the call. When I called back about an hour later, the first thing they said to me was, «We’ve been trying to reach you!» Uhh… I only got 1 call… with no voicemail.
Another night, I went to the ER and told the security that I’m looking for (insert grandpa’s name) and that the previous night, he was in room (xxx)…keep in mind, this was already going to be his 3rd night in. He went in to check, then came out, looked at a paper, and told me he was finally moved into a real hospital room. I was overjoyed! When I went to the main building, they told me he was still in the ER. I went back to the ER, and yes… he was still there. No apologies at all.
WHAT?! There are a few more incidents I could list, but that would make this review so much longer than necessary. GMC is so disorganized, understaffed, and just unprofessional. I am not a fan of this place whatsoever. The only reason they get more than 1 star is that our nurses treated my grandpa very well in the room.

The nearest hosp to our house was full and the ambulance took my mother to Garfield Medical. Garfield staff Intensive Care Unit Doctors Nurses did everything possible to save my mothers life. Thank you for the the outstanding care and compassion you gave my mother and the respect you gave family members.

This is the second time I had to take a relative to Garfield Medical Center. This time, my relative was admitted Christmas eve. Despite the holiday season, the staff was excellent, especially Dr. Zetan Nie. Another exceptional staff was nurse Huy, who made sure that my relative understood the procedure and that she was comfortable.
Docked a star because the bathroom was dirty when my relative was first admitted in the early evening, but was cleaned the next morning.

Took my kid to the emergency room for fever. Fast in-​process at the front desk. Staff very patient. Dr. Kwon was on duty. He took the time to explain the situation and assured us that the situation is well under control. We feel relieved and confident about the visit and hopefully will not be going back again. Stay healthy.

This hospital took care of a very special love one. They did such a great job on allowing us to visit and be able to continually rotate for visits. My love one says that overnight the nureses were the best. Kept her comfy, regardless the hourly rounds they made.

I came in here for abdominal pain and they admitted me and gave me 3 blood transfusion. Day 2 Dr Steven Ho hasn’t given me a diagnosis to my abdominal pain, but hes ready to release after 4th blood transfusion if needed. Wth, Maybe I have internal bleeding? After I leave here I’m going to another hospital in hopes to get diagnosed. Dr released me today and Never gave me my results for my CT scan, abdominal ultrasound, pelvic ultrasound. This Dr Steven Ho didnt do a dang thing except give me 3 blood transfusions. All I wanted was to know what was going on with my body. They tried loading me up with morphine, norco & other pain medication. I requested to be released.

This has got to be the worst hospital ever. It is so filthy. My mom’s here for an emergency because her insurance had only covered for this hospital, or else I would’ve switched her to another hospital. Front desk can be so rude, when some people are totally at a lost of where to go. The nurses aren’t very helpful. I would not recommend this place to anyone if you have the means to go somewhere else.

This place should be shut down. Poor patient care, no Healthcare staff want to advocate for patient’s rights. The staff work here just to get a paycheck. When ask the nurse to contact the doctors, her response was I will ask him when the doctor does his rounds. I personally hate Dr. Zadar refused to order MRI for a patient with hemorrhagic stroke, stating there’s no need for it. WTF… JACHO needs to come this crap hospital unexpected so they can see how this fucking hospital runs. I would not even give this crappy hospital a star… This is the hospital from hell. Patients check in, don’t check out.
One other thing my mom’s lazy ass nurse never once check on my mom expect when passing meds. Her name is Jin.

WTTTTTF. IS. WRONG. WITH. THIS. PLACE!!!
I had to take a family member here due to an emergency and WOW never had I experienced such a rude front desk and nurse (who calls you in to do blood pressure). The front desk lady basically threw papers at me to fill out, expressionless, no empathy — emotionless and the nurse was EXTREMELY rude. So we had a «Dr. Cheng» help us, forgot his first name, and it just seems like he wanted to get rid of his patients by feeding them some BS. When I was inquiring about my family members condition, he basically gave me this «I’m already here longer than I have to tone». He basically told me normally they just give the patients medicine/​shots and kick them out, HONESTLY… HOW IN THE WORLD DID YOU BECOME A DOCTOR!!! I wonder… AFTER that as I was leaving, already upset, the same nurse decided to give me some more attitude, ofcourse, being the nice person that I am, I returned her the favor and her face turned green.

My nurse was really nice! I can’t remember her name, but she was helpful and supportive.(older Asian lady). Took about 25 minutes to get a room, but I got one! Took two stars off only because the sheet she covered me with had some dried blood, which was really gross.

To: Kathleen Connor, Director of Patient Experience (with your 20 yrs combined experience with GMC, 4 years as D. of Patient Experience and 14 years as D. of Rehabilitation Services), who has been responding to the 0 – 1 Star Ratings on Unilocal.
I have a family member who currently is an inpatient at your facility. He was admitted via the Emergency Room and is still in critical condition. You should know that I fully understand EMTALA, which for the rest of Unilocal’s reviewers who had any ER experience with GMC, stands for Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act.
The doctors have been very unprofessional and straight out retaliated against our respectful requests. I am about to escalate the issue to Herbert Villafuerte, Chief Nursing Officer,
David Batista, Chief Executive Officer, and Ruth Honig — Director, Clinical Process Improvement.
GMC may not «dump» patients or let them «rot» out of retaliation, inability to pay, or simply because the doctor does not want to do his job.
I look forward to hearing from you Kathleen, via email from Unilocal.I will not call and leave a message with your office as part of the other thousand of complaints that flooded your voicemail.

Just like everybody else. Worst hospital /​Er ever! I am not going to tell my family life story right here, but my family is beyond disappointed. (8÷18÷2015 /​To. in Er). Something happen in the restroom, Nobody helped!!! Why do you have emergency button in the restroom, if nobody comes & help?!? My family have to open the restroom door and scream for 20 to 30 second, while holding the patient/​family member!!! I can’t believe it!
*** The management from hospital, Please… look into the problem with those UNFAIR SECURITY!!! *** Holding our family back in the beginning! WTH! Let’s put you in my shoe and let see how you feel!

I’ve never written a Unilocal review for a hospital before, but I almost didn’t come to this hospital because of some of the other reviews and I’m glad I did, so hopefully others will take the leap of faith as well.
I dislocated my shoulder on June 18th playing basketball. This was the 3rd time and I really wanted to avoid going to the hospital. Asked my friend to put it back in because the last time I went to the ER, the doctor didn’t know what the hell he was doing and it was a painful mistake. It took the whole night including calling in a specialist to finally fix it.
My wife finally convinced me after a few failed attempts. I got to the ER, was placed in a room relatively (and surprisingly) quickly, and immediately Dr. Asian Doogie Howser comes in and I’m like «i knew this was a mistake.» This doctor is SO young looking, I could have gone to high school with him. He comes in as I’m contemplating how many hours this is going to take, and he asks me to sit up and then boom, resets it like mr. miyagi.
Just like that, I was done. Couldn’t believe it. Yeah it hurt a little but he reset it like we were in an action movie and we still had bad guys to shoot. I was amazed.
The whole thing took a fraction of the time and I’m so glad my wife finally convinced me to go. The waiting room is a little dirty and there are no TVs there (unlike the last hospital I went to for my previous dislocation), but who really cares when I am literally fixed within a few minutes?

The worst staffing and administrative emergency room I have ever seen.
Was there in error but waited almost 5 hours. The Said If I did Not Complain Of My Long Wait Time They Would Have Not Located My Paperwork To Call Me in!
Also Admitting People dont know What They Do OR Tell Others. To cover them up, the little Chinese woman changed my tag ! The Time I Came In At 5 On My First Tag But When I Was Called In At 9 Pm She Told Me Lie That She Needed To Chang A Different Doctor ANDROID Cut My Tag To Replace A New one. I looked at it and it was the same doctor except she changed to 9 so that it did not show I waited 4 hours and if I did not complain I would wait until next day !
You see how they cover up for her mistake
Bad people create bad hodpitsl. From staff admitting to paperwork misplaced to ignoring patients and their condition… All deserve 0 star .
I was sick and fdizzy but Was told to drive to different place because simple they font understand insurance. Someone comes in emergency fir treatment of his dizziness and u told him to drive to dome where else?

If I could give it negative stars I would. There is no communication amongst the doctors or nurses. Procedures were ordered then canceled, same goes for IVs and food.
My family and I had to start questioning and yelling to get some answers.
Every one passed the buck, not my job, I don’t know, ask someone else. …

[This is based on a firsthand experience I had while taking someone to Garfield Medical Center. I was in the room with both patient and caregiver. Some names have been changed to protect the privacy of the individuals involved (i.e. awful nurse with unenviable bedside manner has been changed to «nurse»).]
So a girl I was dating long ago (I confess that’s more of a label than I ever gave it at the time) had gotten rear-​ended because half the drivers in LA don’t know what «Yield» means, including but not limited to those getting onto the 10 in the SGV.
When I ran into the medical center waiting room, she was still in tears and I did my best to comfort her and make her feel safe. Good thing, too, cause it balanced out how annoyed and impatient the nurse who eventually saw her was that a girl had gotten in an accident and had the gall to be shaken up about it. Granted this girl had a penchant for being dramatic, but mostly when it came to my lack of commitment.
Anyway. Look: becoming a nurse is not easy. You have to go through years of schooling and exams to get your RN license. And you also have to sometimes examine girls who get rear-​ended and are crying about it. If that sounds like a shitty way to spend your day, DON’T BE A NURSE.
Now you might say: hey maybe that nurse was having a bad day. To which I would respectfully reply: maybe… But most likely not worse than the girl who just got rear-​ended.
