Established in 2010.

The Monebello location of Selva Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts was founded in 2010 when the head instructor, Jason Selva moved to the Montebello area.

Seeing the positive impact the Alhambra school had on the community, he knew that opening up a location in Montebello was a no brainer.

Head Coach Jason Selva is World Class Black Belt and Master Instructor at Selva BJJ. He has over 13 years of competive brazilian jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts experience. BEWARE of Schools Who Are Not Run by «Real» Black Belts!

In 2009 Qualified for the ADCC championships with is the equivalent the Olympics for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. At this tournament he set a world record which has yet to be beat by winning the enitre tournament and submitting all of his opponents in under 3 minutes!

Been reading some of these reviews and I was so surprised what some of the people have been saying about Selva Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This is one of the Best BJJ Schools that made me feel comfortable and safe, always friendly. I learned a lot from everyone there even though I haven’t even met them before. The instructors are always willing to answers any questions that i have, gives advise and pointers and keep on encourages you to do better ever and never gives up. Best saying that they have is try to improve 1% every class. That is why from day one I keep on continuing to get stronger and better with greats instructors teaching me and great Atmosphere to work in. Their is no way to fail. LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

I took my kids here for three months back in 2011. What a waste of money this place is. Jason Selva is the owner, he is a black belt. But all he did was sit behind his desk during the majority of my kids classes. Jason’s personality is extremely arrogant. Jason’s business ethics are fraudulent. He will continue to charge your debit/credit card long after you have canceled. Don’t plan on receiving a refund, he will refuse. Hopefully this will help anyone who is truly thinking of joining BJJ classes to learn, you will gain absolutely zero knowledge of BJJ from this gym. Don’t be his next victim. This place deserves NO stars, but I don’t get that option.

I am writing a review because there have been some bad reviews that i do not agree with.
I attended and learned at this place as a beginner.
I liked it a lot!
I learned to be respectful towards Bjj.
I learned to believe that there are still genuine instructors with passion and heart.
Why bad reviews? Why blaming the place? You shouldn’t when you missed classes?
You shouldn’t if you didnt give your best.
If you attended all the class schedule and followed the instructor, you should be very happy and grateful.
Here are the reasons,
1) Instructors are passionate of Bjj
2) so, it is a serious Bjj.
It is important to learn the proper way especially as a beginner.
3) Their patience with us
4) Atmosphere and kindness they showed
5) other reasons i can not think of at this time
I felt sooooo good after every practice.
Their price was resonable.
Place was pretty clean.
I appreciate Mr. Jason Sela and Mr. Vintri so much because they couldnt do it without Heart.
They are not just doing it for money.
I would go back if I ever want to learn again.
I just could not continue because of work situation.
I had to write this review because i felt that they dont deserve bad reviews at all.

Probably the worst place I’ve gone to train. I’ve had a blue belt teach class and the class was definitely sub par. They tried to sell me an outrageously over price program and tried to convince me that I only need to attend class 2 times a week. I decided to sign up at versus fitness instead.

I wish I had checked the LA Better Business Bureau website before I signed up at this gym. They will take your money and teach you nothing of substance. Then they will give you a belt promotion for nothing and tell you that you’re now eligible to join the advanced class, but that you now have to pay twice as much to be taught by «world champions». When you ask for your 60-day money back guarantee, they will fudge an absence in your attendance card and tell you that perfect attendance is required during the trial period to qualify for the refund. Wow.
I’m very ashamed to admit that I am one of the apparent many who fell for this scam, but if I don’t tell the story here then more students will fall victim to this business.

As i drove around, i stopped here, i have always been a fan of discipline and martial arts myself. so i decided to come inside. I was fortunate enough to be here during the childrens class, they are very focused and have alot of energy to burn. I was very pleased with the management team. They were willing to answer all my questions and concerns. I was able to meet a coach that is from what i saw very dedicated and has alot of patience for the 16 kids in todays class. what drew me inside were all the medals inside of peoples hard work… plenty of parking outside and credit cards are accepted… a great place for learning, weight loss, self defence or from what i was told competition also. A++

When you have been training as long as I have you know he REAL DEAL when you see it.
Jason Selvas accomplishments in the grappling world there is an event that happens every two years. ADCC, Jason to this day holds the record in fastest submissions (wins) to first place. This is EPIC. And, had not been repeated ever.
If you are lucky enough to be in the area i highly recommend training here. I drove about an hour in traffic to take classes. I see some bad reviews on here I think they are from the the other gym close by. I didn’t see any of the crap mentioned in the other reviews. Everyone was very nice. Place was spotless classes were orgaized at the level of teaching is very HIGH level.
Thanks Jason! Ill be back to train again soon.

I was lured into Selva BJJ on the promise of «free,» free stuff, free 30 days, free gi, but received NOTHING! This place is all smoke and mirrors. I couldnt get a straight answer about prices, class schedule or instructors from anyone. The staff was condescending and rude, did they not realize they are in a service based industry? I felt like I was at a used car dealership.
The class was disjointed and unorganized, the instructors were unsure of the move they were demonstrating, Ive never seen that kind of unprofessionalism before. Shouldnt they know the move before they show it?
I saw a few women in the class and they looked uncomfortable. I felt bad for them, there was only one restroom, and it was inthe guys changing area. I wouldnt bring my wife, gf or sister here, not family friendly at all. This place is a joke man.

this is unbelievable i set up an appt and got no showed then i called them again to set up another one .then they call to cancel on me bullshit i ask about price they tell me my kids might not even qualify… wtf havent even seen my kidsyet… also noticed no one metions prices on here … unproffesional. someone need to train on customer service because the fail misserably at it

I’ll keep this short and sweet. The owner Jason Selva is arrogant and unprofessional. He never emailed my contract after signing up, scheduled an appointment for a private session that he forgot about, continued to charge me after I let him know that I was no longer interested in keeping my membership, and had the nerve to ask me to amend my Unilocal review after I addressed the fact that his company engaged in fraudulent charges. When I e-mailed him to tell him that I saw a cockroach on the mat, his response was «Oh, wow»
I’m sorry, but that is a deal breaker. How can you operate a business with such disregard to health and safety compliances? And how about sanitizing the mat between classes? On more than one occasion, the mat was not cleaned after the children’s class. The gym smelled like sweaty crumb crunchers and was wet and dusty. Gross. The only good thing about the entire experience? Justin, the guy who signed me up is pretty hot. So ladies, I recommend getting your one on one with him and not the owner. Yuck.

On August of 2010, I was getting ice cream with my kids near the Toys R Us in Montebello and noticed a banner that read Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Being a MMA fan, I decided to go check it out. I met with two of the coaches there Jason and Binthri, they were very helpful in providing information and answering my questions. I left thinking maybe I’ll try it out, however didn’t think I would have the time working 6 days a week and raising two kids.

After my trial class I decided to join Selva Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and probably made one of the best decisions of my life. Thanks to their full schedule of classes, I’ve been able to train 3 times a week even with my busy schedule. In the first 3 months I went from 210lbs to 185lbs. On April 17^th 2011 at the ripe age of 32 years old (yes 32), I went to my first tournament and competed at the 165lbs weight class.
Although it’s an individual sport, after my first tournament I realized how important the team is and I can’t say enough good things about the support I received from my teammates and most importantly the coaches at Selva Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The bottom line is I feel and look a lot healthier and stronger than I did 10 months ago, plus I’m learning how to defend myself and having fun doing it.

Some background on me: no sports in Highschool, hardcore gamer, eating bacon all the time (still do), about as much cardio as a sloth.
I was pretty much dragged out of my gaming dungeon during a heated Starcraft2 diamond league match by my older brother. Wasn’t too difficult for him, since he has been going for over 6 months. He just collar choked me out the door.
Puked the first time, came back for more! Sometimes you just need that extra prodding to really push yourself, and nothing prods you more than someone trying to bend your arms like Gumby. I have been going 2 – 3 times a week for about 3 months and I already notice a big change in my level of fitness and skill.
There are 3 coaches there and its a great experience learning from each one of them. It keeps the training diverse and the wealth of knowledge is empowering. The most important thing about the coaches is their attitude and their willingness to help correct your faults and focus on improving your game.
Great experience so far for me, the only downside is that both of the gyms are not the same. The one in Alhambra is bigger with more equipment than the Montebello one, but you get access to both with membership so distance is the only problem.

I called Jason Selva and he was very apologetic for us missing an intro class due to a scheduling error. He’s called back to reschedule our class and I am happy that he was so responsive.

I made an appointment for an intro class for my daughters and drove my family from Pasadena at 8:30a on a Saturday 2−5−11. No one bothered to show up or even have the courtesy to call us back.
If this is how they take care of their students then we’ll just have look elsewhere to another jui-jitsu school for instruction.
Very disappointed.)
