For the first time in 15 years, I had to get a smog test. It seems the DMV embargo on hybrids needs smog tests has ended and so I did what any Unilocaler would do and looked for the highest rated place near me to get a smog check. That led me to Ron at M&M Smog.
I called this morning to schedule an appointment and he told me to just come on down. Once I told him I had a 2010 Toyota Prius, he told me he would have me done in a jiffy. When I showed up at the shop, all I had to do was fill out a quick form, give him my letter from DMV and my key. Then Ron was off to the races. While in the waiting room I started chatting with another customer about the hybrid batteries and helped refute some common misconceptions non-​hybrid drivers had about hybrds. Minutes later Ron came back and noted he was just about done. I thought that was quick! Anyhow, Ron overheard my conversation about the Prius Batteries and he says to me
«That will be $ 48».
I look at the sign and say
«Don’t you mean $ 58?».
Ron says back to me «Every Prius driver I met has a Unilocal account so go ahead and show me your phone, I know you have the coupon ready!»
Ron is skilled, fast, and apparently psychic too. Unilocal has a sweet deal for $ 10 off your next smog check when you check in. Too bad DMV took much longer this morning. :-(

This is the place to for your smog check. The business was immaculate, the staff was super nice, and the price was reasonable. From start to finish I was in and out in approximately ten minutes. As much as I hate California’s overly stringent smog laws and CARB bureaucracy at least this place made it quick and painless.

Brought my Corvette zo6 to M&M’s, the owner was very friendly and careful working on my car. Definitely the fastest, and smoothest smog check I’ve had. Thank you.

Car registration in California can be a really daunting and annoying thing especially if your vehicle is due for a smog check. It is bad enough California already charges a ridiculous amount of money for registration (which a percentage goes to our awesome California highways), but we have to be additionally gouged for a smog check so the nannies and Sacramento can feel like they are doing something about climate change! The population in California is 39 million and the populations of China and India are a 2.6 billion combined. Sooooo … all these measures to save the planet amount to squat as long as China and India give climate change 2.6 billion middle fingers collectively. In the end, it is all a scam and a money grab so they can spend your money on ridiculous ideas (i.e. The «Brown Stain» to no where).
Rohlinism: The only climate change Californians needs is the climate in Sacramento!
So the «Battlewagon» (our 2001 Kia Sportage) car’s registration was due and the better half noticed as she was about to pay the bill online … a smog certification was required by a STAR station. What is a STAR station you ask? Here is the description from the DMV:
«All this means is that the DMV has chosen your vehicle to be inspected at a STAR certified smog station which is monitored closely by the Bureau of Automotive Repairs and must conform to high standards established by the BAR.»
This translate into «The nannies in Sacramento think your car is too old to drive, so they are going to make you go to a more strictly monitored Smog check because they want your car to fail so you can’t drive it anymore!»
My better half immediately felt some trepidation about getting a smog check on the «Battlewagon,» but made the appointment for 8:30 am on Saturday with M & M Smog and hoped the car was pass the test. Our trusted mechanic (two words that usually don’t belong together) Chip had introduced us to M & M Smog a number of years ago and we were given a 10 percent discount on your first visit because of the referral.
I arrived at M & M (
) about 5 minutes early, told the person working about the appointment. He immediate took the car into the garage (
) and I did some catch up on Unilocal in the waiting area (
) while the test was being run.
The waiting area is nondescript, lacks AC, so I was glad the better half made the as early as possible. I imagine this room getting uncomfortable as the day gets longer. The garage only hold one vehicle at a time, so make sure you have an appointment or you might be turned away.
The whole process took about 10 minutes and the «Battlewagon» foiled the plans of those Sacramento sissies by passing the strict smog check with flying colors. The certificate was emailed the DMV, so the better half could pay the absurd registration fee and after paying $ 58 for the check, I was out the door.
There is nothing fancy about this place, the staff is efficient, but don’t expect any bells and whistles, just a quick smog check!

Sean has retired and sold this business to another owner.
They are currently not setup to do Smog testing.
I have not had any dealings with the new business other than telephone contact.
The first time I asked to speak to Sean and the person was abrupt and just said Sean wasn’t there.
The second time I called the person told me that Sean had retired and they were not setup to do smog testing (yet)?

Had to get a smog ASAP in order to make my appointment at the DMV so I called to see if they were available that morning and they were. Smogged within half an hour and was on my way. Highly recommended.

I was skeptical when I first saw all these reviews, I didn’t know what to really expect but figured f*ck it, I need a smog test and I need it now. Sean is a pretty chill dude. The minute I called it was like I was talking to a buddy who was hooking me up. I wanted to make an appointment, but he told me just to come on over. Upon my arrival I handed him everything and he grabbed all my stuff and was out in one minute telling me he’d be done in 15. I didn’t mind waiting, but he busted out my smog test like he said. Great man and business. All major credit cards accepted, even AMEX.

Again … its always about Sean. I’m sure there are lots of places that can do your smog, but they probably won’t remember you.
Sean remembered me, let me walk in the day after Thanksgiving and had me out in about 20 minutes.
