My previous job brought me here as my client wanted a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. The menu mainly was everything with fries. I ordered fried okra, hushpuppies, and 4 fried jumbo shrimp ala carte. The shrimp were surprisingly huge like prawns not butterfly shrimp and very good. The hushpuppies and okra was good and I brought most if it home. The place is located right on Broadway in North Minneapolis. The counter person also did the cooking. 4⁄5 due to bathroom needing to be totally gutted as floor was crumbling and floor uneven and unclean. Doubt if I’ll return as I won’t be working in Minneapolis again. The food was good.

Lake Street Location This place seems like they could not care any less. Food quality was horrible. Entire place was dirty. Fish tasted so nasty and chewy with bones in it and so thin that I never even got one good bite of fish. Shrimp was small and blah. Fries were ok. The canned Coke was the best thing about the meal. Unless you don’t care at all what you eat or are a complete garbage disposal you will regret going there to eat.

The place is absolutely disgusting! Would not recommend eating anything from this place! I am surprised they are still in business!;

Stopped for the first time today, at the Lake street location. Food was awesome! I ordered the shrimp and wings basket, which also came with fries, toast, cole slaw, and a soft drink for under $ 10. The portions were huge, I had leftovers to take home! There was a little bit of a wait, food is cooked after ordered. No burgers and fries sitting under the warming lamp like most places. So when your food arrives it is HOT! Nice menu with good selection of fish, chicken, sides, and desserts.

I have been there a couple times. Everything is deep fried… that is a good thing, but theirs ends up mostly batter. I like sauces, most of theirs is in those little pain in the ass packets. Bad drink choice. Seems to take forever to get food. Other customers can be loud and obnoxious. I won’t go back for awhile, but won’t rule it out either.

so i came to this place becaue i love fish and chips. The place was in a sketchy parto of the neighborhood. one guy was wearing a super huge winter Jacket in April infront of this store. when i entere the restaurant. it was dirty, and one guy was working in there. The guy was nice but he looked like he didn’t want to be there. after he rang me up. I handed him the money, he didn’t take the money right away because he was too busy looking at the road, How freaking rude is that when you don’t acknowledge a customer infront of you. I ordered the tilapia with shrimp combo. fish was dry, shrimps were ok but still greasy, fries were decent. the tartar sauce they gave me was in little plastic pacakage and was the worst, my 5 year old can make better tartar sauce. I used run a fish and chips restaurant in CT so i know a little bit about fish and chips. I wouldn’t go there again. very dissapointed.

Things that make you go hmmmm… This is that time. Normally when I go to Hooks I order the sambusa…(very yum). But this time I wanted some good fish and shrimp. I ordered the tilapia and shrimp. Okay sounds awesome, I LOVELOVE tilapia. They was boxing up my meal and asked me «Do you want seasoning?» Okay As I seen them darn near cover people’s food with that mysterious white dust cloud. What is it? Season? What kind of «season» are you trying to suffocate my poor meal in? So I chose no «season» then left. When I got home and started to eat the meal… the shrimp was good. The fries… ehhh I will pass on those next time. had a odd texture to them. Are they battered too? Jeez. So I got to the tilapia, there were two fillets and boy they are large! But when i ate some WHYOHWHY did it taste like the bottom of a fish tank? Ugh… i mean it just tasted like murky lake water. did they get these poor fish from lake Calhoun??? I’m just saying, so i tried it with the hot sauce that came with it. MUCH better! Now I see why they want you to let them put a blanket of the white dust on the food. To cover the finding nemo dirty goldfish bowl taste.(Shrug) but hey I can always count on the Sambusa!

Fried everything :) Quality fried to order catfish, good hushpuppies, tasty fries, and coleslaw. Chicken wings a bit dry and overly salted. Definitely a great post-bar pit-stop. Service was friendly a

Use to love coming here for the chicken tender dinner but then they changed the type of meat they use. The fries are still great and the gyros and sandwiches are all pretty good.

Great chicken. They also had an awesome selection of pies and other desserts that looked amazing. If your ok with going into the hood. Go get some of this fried chicken.

Yum!!! It’s just sooo good I don’t know how else to say it. The chicken is the best ever. I recommend requesting a little extra seasoning. The fries are pretty good too. I’m not a huge fan of coleslaw but ppl say its average. Honestly this place specializes in chicken and fish, and they def get 5 stars for that! North Mpls gets a bad wrap. We live there & it’s not as bad as ppl say. Yeah the parking lot looks sketchy at night & it is off broadway but I’ve been there late & never had a problem. Check it out!

I was driving up Broadway and looking for something a little different from the corporate fast food chains. I saw the Hook and whipped a u-turn to give it a shot. Admittedly, I wasn’t expecting much considering the place could use some basic maintenance, upkeep, and cleaning. Oh, and that the place was empty at 12:15pm on a Wednesday. The menu is pretty basic, you’ve got a few variations of fried fish, and a few options for fried chicken. All of which, come with enough food for at least 2 people. I decided to give the catfish a try. The guy fried up 3 fresh filets of catfish that were amazing! Way beyond my expectation of a greasy, stinky, fishy tasting filet. The fries were good too, they obviously fry them in a different fryer since they didn’t have the fish flavor I was expecting either. I would definitely go back again, next time I’ll go with either a bigger appetite or a couple more people to help me finish my lunch!

hankering for some fried chicken had me driving down Broadway… driven by Hook’s numerous times and last night I made in. Now, I’ve lived in North for almost 8 years… so it takes a bit to frazzle me, but Hook’s parking lot at dusk is a bit scary. But it was so worth the few seconds of apprehension during the walk back to the car. I got the 3 wings with fries… oh my… finger lickin good all for 4.25, nice. Came with a small container of hot sauce and packets of BBQ sauce… Highly recommend this place, I would even go as far to say that it gives Tooties a run for their money on the wings. Just bring cash and day light hours recommended for those who get a little jumpy.

Pretty good chicken. I’m 95% sure it’s same chain as J&J Fish and Chicken that I’ve reviewed, which was my only dissapointment when I tried it, as menu is same and it tastes same. But I like J&J so, hey. Everything is made fresh, so I recommend calling ahead.

My arteries started clogging while I waited in line. Don’t let appearances, or location fool you. If you can stomach ultra greasy chicken and fried fish… this is your kind of place! Warning: the«Let Me See You Move Something» man from Blue Cross will pay you a visit shortly after devouring one of their meals. I’ve tried the Fried Chicken, the Perch, and the Fries. All were very tasty, and I had a very long nap after my meal. The price was reasonable too, and for about 25 bucks, 4 people were fed, and filled successfully. If you aren’t one to buy into how the«North» is so «dangerous»…take a stroll off the beaten path to Hook Fish and Chicken… make sure to bring wet naps, Tums, and an empty belly to fill.

Admittedly, this place has«character» It’s grimy, homegrown, and utterly charming. Hook Fish & Chicken is such an excellent take out restaurant, it’s a shame people are afraid to voyage into North Minneapolis to try it. Believe me, it’s well worth the wait. Now, this is not a healthy eating option, but you knew that before you clicked on the link. What you do get is some of the beast fried chicken and fish in the cities Lots of great options too, like perch, jack salmon, catfish, and shrimp… Ahh, the shrimp here makes the trip totally worth it. Please support this local joint and the wonderful owner.
