Business Owner

Dr. Varela completed his training in Otolaryngology-​Head and Neck Surgery at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina in 2004. His undergraduate and medical degrees were both completed at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Varela has practiced in the Portland metro area since 2004. He founded Northwest ENT and Allergy in February 2007 to provide easily accessible, community-​based ear, nose, throat and allergy care for the entire family.

Dr. Varela enjoys seeing a wide variety of general otolaryngology problems, and his particular interests are pediatric and adult allergy, sinus, sleep and swallowing disorders. His office is equipped for a full range of inhalant (pollen, mold, dust, dander) and food allergy testing as well as endoscopic evaluation of sinus, swallowing and speech disorders. Home sleep testing for sleep apnea and office-​based procedures for snoring and nasal blockage are also available.

I was so excited to finally have insurance to see a doctor regarding my allergies; I have had difficulty breathing comfortably through my nose since childhood. My allergy tests came back with the general diagnosis that all people have dust mite allergies. I was highly disappointed that they just recommended nasal spray and allergy pills which is what I was already doing and getting minimal results. I expected more.

Before my first appointment they asked me to sign their Hippa Privacy Form, I asked for a copy of it and it was nine pages long. I’ve never seen one longer than one to two pages (and I’ve had cancer so I’ve seen a lot of them) so I decided to read through it. On the very first page they made it clear that they will use your protected information for commercial and fundraising purposes and they will also share it with business partners for marketing purposes.
I asked about it and I was told «they didn’t currently do any of that this is just in case they decide to». There was no further explanation… They would not treat me without me signing that form. So I left. I waited almost a year for that recommendation and it took me an hour and a half to get to their office. So much for patients first.

This practice has helped me immensely. I have sleep apnea, medium-​bad, and wanted to know if there was anything in my nose or throat contributing to that problem. Dr. Adrian Varela scoped my nose and discovered a deviated septum, enlarged tonsils, and overgrown turbinates. In May, 2015, he did my surgery to correct these. That surgery was done very well, and I’m already seeing benefits: much better air flow when I breathe, and an improved sense of smell due to that air flow. I want to commend Dr. Varela, John Billinger, P.A., the sleep test personnel, and all the nurses I’ve seen. This is a caring and professional ENT practice.

I’ve been seen at NW ENT for a couple of years now. There office staff is very polite and accommodating. Their recommended treatments and advice is actually helping me beat my seasonal allergies so that makes me pretty happy.

I have read the reviews which have brought on this concern.
in phoning their offices twice today and both times getting answering machine saying they are closed although I called outside of their lunch hour (noon to one p.m.).
Well, let’s just say I am glad I read this page… and will continue to call to ask many questions i.e. what is covered via insurance.

I would give this place ZERO STARS if that was possible.
What a bunch of criminals. I went in for a consult, as I was having trouble breathing and the doctor asked if it was okay to look in my nose. I agreed thinking this was just standard procedure. He said he was going to give me a nasal endoscopy, a procedure that took no more than 5 minutes. He had me sign a waiver saying «this just says that it’s okay for me to do the procedure» so I stupidly signed. Cut to one week later when I get a bill for THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS. This is on TOP of the 200 & change that my insurance already paid them.
I cannot afford to pay it. They’ve been harassing me through email/​phone/​post ever since. Worse than any credit agency I’ve ever dealt with. I’ll never go back, I’ll NEVER recommend them. EVER. Sorry Northwest ENT, I’ve got to feed my kids. You assholes.

Oh, I finally get my day in court! I had an AWFUL, AWFUL experience with these people, if that’s what you want to call them. First off, they made me feel like a lab rat as they performed several random tests on me, none of which relieved me of my symptoms or identified the cause of my problems. Second, they will not consult with you as to what tests and/​or procedures are covered/​not covered by your insurance, they just suggest and perform. I can honestly say that it wasn’t about the unexpected $ 1000+ I had to shell out for uninsured services, because I would have happily paid triple for answers and to simply feel better. Instead, it was about the entire experience and process — test, test, test, … scratch the forehead … try this, test, test, I think it’s this, can you come back?, big ugly bill, hounding me for payment. Let’s just say that I paid a $ 1000+ for a lot of guesses, a series of uncomfortable tests and procedures, loss of a lot of time, and ZERO answers. I highly recommend that you take your business elsewhere. Thanks for nothing NW ENT!
