Everything is on sale… but a lot of it was only 20% off… and I couldn’t use my Borders card. The shelves were very organized considering they are doing a «blow out» clearance of all their books. I hope that prices go down a little more! But in any case… I wasn’t greeted when I came in the store and none of the people working even passed by to see if I needed any assistance. I mean, I walked the ENTIRE store without anyone talking to me. However, when I did select something to purchase, they were very nice at the check out. I understand the store is closing and they must be busy but having a little«shopping» interaction is always nice. I don’t think I’m going to go back until the book prices drop… more…but by then there may not be anything good left. We’ll see. #Yelp 365 challenge 010⁄365 I don’t know how but my august 9 posted for aug 10. and i forgot to write one yesterday. Whoops!

This Borders Express has a nice selection of every genre of book. It even has a cool local area bookshelf with books like, «Pidgin To Da Max» that help you learn the Hawaiian Isles’ interesting(and sometimes cryptic) creole language that is based on a mixture of English, Hawaiian, Portuguese, and various other Asian languages. It gives you hilarious comic illustrations while you learn what a «Mahu» and a «Lolo» is. If you don’t already know what those two words mean, then you better Google it cause they are awesome. Besides the nice selection of books for how small this Borders is, it also has a wide variety of calendars, greeting cards, toys, bookmarks, stuffed animals, and various other gift items. I bought my 2011 Betty White calendar here and love it! Another great thing about this store is that the workers are very kind and never tell you to «Get off the floor,» if there is no where else to sit. I hate that recent hostility that has been added to my favorite bookstore: Barnes & Noble. I always think, «WELLTHENGETSOMEMOREGOSHDARNCOUCHESANDCHAIRSANDWEWOULDN’T HAVETOSITONTHEFLOOR!». Urgh. The only thing about this place that I don’t like is that they are closing down soon, which means I’m going to have to drive all the way down to Honolulu for my bookstore fix. Personally I like the layout of Barnes & Noble more, but it is still pretty far away from Mililani. Plus, I guess I sort of have to like Borders since its roots are in my home state of Michigan. *R.I.P. BORDERS* Unilocal365-#003/365

The only redeeming quality about this place, is that it has the biggest«variety» of books to choose from in my immediate area. Trust me, that isn’t saying much. For a while before I started my fledgling collection of books I hope to someday develop into a library, I thought I could go to the route of the future, and just read everything electronically. Maybe one day, but I’m still attached to the concept of reading a book, and adding it to my stack of «conquered» works. I wouldn’t really call it boasting, since it’s not like I can show it all off and say«hey look at my books, I have read all of these, be in awe of me», on account that nobody would really see it unless they were in my place. Reminds me I need to get a bookshelf. But anyways, «borders express» does indeed imply that there isn’t a big selection, and with a name like that, I should have known better than to have decent expectations of it. Pros: 1. It’s organized. But that’s not hard when there isn’t much to organize. 2. Location. Me being as lazy as I am to drive only a little further around the island to get to a bigger bookstore. Cons: 1. Selection is a black hole. Especially the fiction, science, history, and religion(or pretty much every) section. They seem to not have a shortage for the young adult section, which since I’m just a regular adult, does not strike my interest.

I love books! I love to read em, hold em, hug em. I remember back in my adolescence spending the whole weekend reading books. I refuse to buy e-readers because I love the feel of holding a book, turning the pages, and closing the book after reading the last page. I’m glad this location survived the closure of Borders stores around the country. They always have bargain books for children on the rack outside the store. My child’s book case is filling up with books and I’m glad because I want him to feel the joy and love I do of reading books.

I live out by Wahiawa and I love reading. Now I do go to the library a lot but sometimes I just want o OWN the book. When I get that way and am far too lazy to drive down to Waikele, I come here and get my shop on. I love the fact that even though its a small store, they try to jam everything in there from a regular size store. Whenever I can’t find a book, the workers are nice enough to either help me find it or if they don’t have it in stock, they tell me where I can get it. I love the fact they have a «Buy 4 Get 1 Free» deal going on. I’m not sure if it is everywhere but I hope so. *Tip* Come when there is live music outside and enjoy it while you shop inside!

I’ve been coming to this Borders for years now, even before it was called Borders… back when it was«Waldenbooks». Those were the glory days. Since the glory days this place has pretty much fallen to the wayside. This particular Borders book store is really small, cram-packed and organized in a haphazard kind of way. A very good Unilocal friend of mine recommended«The Joy Of Not Working» and I couldn’t find it, so I asked the girl at the sales counter and she was OK in helping me, but I couldn’t get over how many times she sighed… was it me? Or was it her personal issues? She was nice enough to write it down for me, so I could find it somewhere else; they didn’t have it. This store is just OK. Sure do miss the Waldenbooks days where everything was organized better and the people working the register and counters knew their stuff.

I can’t justify giving it less than two stars but it’s almost worse than having no bookstore options at all when you give me a teaser like this one! Express?! WTF?! If by «express» they mean small store, limited selection of items that make no sense/not current editions and somewhat inept staff then all I can say is that their definition of express differs from mine. I came in looking for a book on the local slang aka«pidgin» for my brother. I found ONE. Not one as in «one kind» but ONEBOOKPERIOD. Seriously?! This is HAWAII! And NO «Da Jesus Book» does NOT qualify as a book on pidgin, mediocre sales staff. It’s a pidgin version of the bible. Although humorous in it’s own way it wasn’t what I asked for. In the end I left slightly satisfied with my copy(now my brother’s) of an OLD edition of «Pidgin to Da Max». I’m pissed that it’s like the FIRST friggin’ run of the book and doesn’t include/exclude some of the current pidgin terms and has many that I’ve never/will never hear/d. Unless you are desperate, I would bypass this one in favor of a larger one in town. Otherwise you run the risk of feeling let down and irritated by what could have, would have and should have been a decent bookstore option. Borders: you should invest in some recent editions of local style books and books dealing with the area in general. Most of what you carry is so old it wouldn’t fool the most haole of tourists.
