What’s the Scoop

We used to go here a lot a couple of years ago they had great flavors and great variety of really unique flavors. We moved away but my parents are still in the area. We decided to check it out. WHAT A MISTAKE.
Don’t bother looking at the HUGE sign on the wall that lists all these potentially awesome flavors. As said by the very nice kid behind the counter «that sign is really outdated» well then fix it. What ice cream shop doesn’t have rocky road?!
Also a number of he flavors they do have are so frozen in their containers that they had to put the tubs of ice cream into the pizza oven so it would be soft enough to scoop out.
As we were waiting to pay a family was sitting eating her ice cream. The mom went to throw out her empty ice cream container and the trash was so full she couldn’t fit the cup in the bin.
Such a disappointment for $ 25 for 5 medium cups which are more like smalls at other shops.

Cool place the ice cream was creamy and some very distinct flavors. A little disappointed based on all the hype. Also were out of a lot of flavors I wanted to try. Still good ice cream

Every cool town needs its classic ice cream shop and this is exactly what Metuchen has. I have been here several times since moving from the city, to catch up with friends or as part of a leisurely stroll. The ice cream is deelish and the service is friendly. I recommend this place to all my friends and family.

Pretty solid ice cream shop on the quaint main street of Metuchen. They have any flavor your heart could desire and even a pizzeria right inside!

Great place. And if anyone mentions the old lady again there is going to be trouble. She makes that place what it is!

This place has SO much potential but seems happy with status quo. It needs an update (and that doesn’t mean you change the style, it just means you clean it up and invest a little). The bathrooms are dirty and the whole place feels a smidge gross. The service is meh (smile a little or at least say hello for crying out loud). It has a ton of history and I suspect it stays alive because people are attached to its memory. It could be so much more with some TLC. I also agree with another reviewer, the ice cream wasn’t that awesome — with the exception of the pumpkin pie seasonal one which I thought was solid.

When entering you are given many flavors to choose from, which may get you excited, but don’t be fooled! I have decided to go with an American favorite, a vanilla and chocolate swirl soft ice cream. When I tasted it, I felt like I was eating really old ice cream that has been standing there for years, untouched, unloved, unwanted. My stomach immediately started to hurt and I knew this was a bad decision. I should have known better, they have too much going on. All those flavors, and they have the smell of pizza throughout. They should decide if they want to be a pizza place or an ice cream place. My friend decided to get the Banana flavored ice cream, his all time favorite! I am not sure what they used to make this flavor, but I don’t think it’s natural. First bite had the consistency of chewing gum and tasted like a Mary Jane’s candy bar from the 50’s. I think they used my son’s play-​doh. Don’t let the old lady in the front fool you!

Really fun ice cream parlor /​pizza place! Many MANY flavors of ice cream served in every possible form you could want from shakes to floats to scoops to sundaes and beyond.
I had the Bailey’s ice cream, which while only tasting faintly of the Irish cream, was still refreshing and delicately sweet. The scoop size was generous and I left happy. With all the flavors to choose from you fill find yourself wanting to come again since so many of them are appetizing.

Such a cute family owned ice cream shop (they serve pizza too)! It’s a little kid’s dream come true. What’s the scoop is great for a cheap family night out!
My boyfriend and I came here about a year ago and LOVED it. We recently returned and I was upset when I realized the ice cream flavors were very weak. They almost all tasted like vanilla ice cream with just a slight hint of what they are supposed to be. I couldn’t even find a flavor I liked when taste testing and felt too awkward to ask for more… So I decided to just play it safe by ordering coffee mudslide & cookies and cream without tasting them. The coffee mudslide turned out to be the most flavorful ice cream I tried, so I approve of that one! The cookies and cream is worst that I’ve ever had. It practically tasted identical to a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
I plan to give What’s the Scoop a third try before I completely rule it out in my book of go to’s. My recommendation to everyone else is not to order without tasting first!

This is the best place for ice cream! Friendly environment not to mention the pizza is to die for!

The smell told me that I needed to get a slice. I’m glad I did. It was delicious and fresh. Next time, will check out the ARRAY of ice cream.

As a huge ice cream fan, I’d say this is the best ice cream parlor you’re going to get in the area. Their flavor selection is tremendous and they’re willing to push boundaries past your conventional ice cream parlor. They have two flavors that I usually consider hard to find, green tea (for once not in an asian supermarket) and maple walnut. And here are both flavors in the same spot! The quality of the ice cream is superb.
If you come by certain nights of the week, there are also occasionally groups of people playing guitar around the back seating so you get a free show too sometimes,

This place is hands down amazing. We visit usually in the evening for ice cream craving and it has never let down. Great variety and great taste. I also arranged a small surprise party for my husband with about 15 people. Had ordered ice cream cake which was absolutely amazing. Also the staff helped a lot in organizing and other stuff during the party. It was also quite reasonable compared to the place and food. A must try especially for ice cream lovers!

Cool, old-​fashioned ice cream parlor right in the heart of downtown Metuchen. It’s places like this that really define the local Main Street. Forget Cold Stone and Dairy Queen. A place with a cleaver name like What’s The Scoop should be the treat that satisfies your sweet tooth.
This place has dozens of ice cream flavors; so many that you will spend a long time trying to figure out what you want or if you’re like me, the perfect combination in one cup. After much debate, I settled on Hazelnut and Cappuccino ice cream and it certainly did not disappoint! I had no problem finishing it and enjoyed it until the very last spoonful. In fact, a small here could easily pass as a medium.
Feel free to sample away as the staff will let you try any flavor you wish before you place your final order. They have tables both inside and out or you can choose to take a walk along Main and work off some of the calories. There aren’t many places left like this folks, so make sure you stop on by.

Loved coming here for a sweet treat. They have some pretty good and unique flavors. Most of the time, the ice creams were spot on. But sometimes, I would get scoops with freezer burn. =(
Besides that, the ice cream is yummy

Funnily enough, my first time here was for a blood drive. Unconcious or not, I can still tell a good pizza and ice-​cream shop from a bad one and this place is clearly a hotspot. First of all, I’m a sucker for old towns and quaint little shops. Second, who doesn’t like ice-​cream? Located on Main St, surrounded by other small boutiques, this place is definitely worth checking out!
I usually prefer thin crust but I tried their oven-​made cheese pizza and the crust tasted golden. Hand-​tossed with fresh cheese and tomato sauce… just the smell made my stomach growl. Their ice-​cream is also pretty good. Beats ice-​cream-​truck standards by any day. But what’s really great about this place is the wide range of homemade flavors. I always go with cookies & cream or vanilla but even I was tempted by the endless choices of sorbets, froyo, and soft-​serve. Service is great, the staff are ambiable and always ready to serve you.

Apart from its delicious pizza and phenomenal über yummy ice cream, I was disappointed at this place. I have dined here with my family and friends and had an excellent time. It’s affordable and, again, the food is good. The location is very close to our home and it helps keep the small town feel that Metuchen already has. That’s why I decided to throw my daughter’s birthday here. I booked it easily and when I visited the place for final arrangements I was very excited because the party host I had seemed enthusiastic about the party and appeared to be experienced in handling bday parties.
When we arrived a half hour before our party, the hostest was setting up and even helped us set up (we brought party supplies to stick with the theme.) It all came crashing down, when I realized she was not starting to indulge the kids with party games like promised. I had to ask her to start the games and in return she asked me «what kind of games would you like me to do?» Not what I expected. She couldn’t engage the kids with any games. She looked unprepared and really looked inexperienced in being a party host. She was so lost and overwhelmed. I had to ask my cousin who is a pediatric OT to take over the games.
As our guests stood around, three pies came in. The other pies that I ordered were not ready. We had to wait for at least another 5 to 10 minutes for the other pizzas to arrive. I expressed my frustration that I expected the pizza to be ready since I was there a week before and had told them how many pizzas I would need. Also before the guests arrived, I was asked what time do I want the pizzas served. It was frustrating and embarrassing that our guests waited. The kids were at their wits end because there were no activities for them to do like expected.
When the ice cream came, we didn’t have enough ice cream ready and again the kids had to wait. I was under the impression that the host would have them sit down and let them make their sundaes as I was told prior. But that didn’t happen. Again the boat lost control.
Overall the food lived up to my expectations but the service was horrendous. The staff needs to be more ready and 1 party host is not enough. I was under the impression that the hostest would be more engaging. She was unprepared as to what to do with these kids. I didn’t have to have my mom, my husband, and myself do most of the work. It was very disappointing.
In the end, I would come back here for the food but will never throw a party here ever again. I wouldn’t recommend it for parties.

Recommend: coffee mud pie; chocolate monster cookie
Wide variety of flavors (great taste) but upset that you cannot combine gelato with ice cream.

If you are an ice cream lover like me, What’s the Scoop is the place for you! I was eating at restaurant nearby and unhappy with their dessert selection, I used my Unilocal app and found What’s the Scoop! The name instantly intrigued me. I just had to sample this ice cream for myself.
There are SO many options for ice cream available that it can be a bit overwhelming for someone indecisive like me. I honestly wanted to sample them all but did not want to torture the worker behind the counter. I opted for a small ice cream and got two flavors — fig and hazelnut. The fig tasted just like the fruit, only in ice cream form. The hazelnut was just as creamy and smooth as the hazelnut gelato I had in Italy. It’s easy to say I was very pleased with my ice cream choices. Also available are about 12 gelato flavors, soft serve ice cream and toppings galore!
I found it interesting that they also sell pizza and hot dogs in addition to the ice cream. Although most of the patrons were there for the ice cream, there were a few people getting slices. There are some tables and chairs inside for you to sit and enjoy your delicious treats.
I am not really in the Metuchen area all that often. but I think now I may make trips here especially for this ice cream :)

I don’t know how I did it but I forgot one more NJ review. I forgot to write a review for an ice cream shop. What the hell is wrong with me? Don’t answer that. There are many things wrong with me, but this isn’t a review of dan h. It is a review for What’s the Scoop.
What’s the Scoop has been around for at least 10 years. Probably even closer to 15 at this point, but probably not quite that long. Metuchen was sorely in need of an ice cream shop when I lived here as Friendly’s was the only place around. Enter What’s the Scoop.
At one point the ice cream here was some big name brand ice cream. Not sure who they used. Think Breyer’s or Dreyer’s or another that rhymes. That doesn’t seem to be the case any longer. Not sure if the ice cream is made in house. Someone help me out here. I think the ice cream is Steve’s Ice Cream? Maybe Steve works here or owns What’s the Scoop. I wish I knew as I forgot to ask. My dad seemed to think the ice cream was made on the premises. He came here once since they moved over to this ice cream and he didn’t seem to care for it too much. I think he has changed his mind though.
I treated us to ice cream sundae’s on a beautiful early spring day. Ice cream, whipped cream, nuts, caramel and a cherry. What else does one need on their sundae. Nice sized sundae’s and only $ 4.75 each. I think the flavor I had was hazelnut. Whatever it was it was really satisfying.
Whether or not they make the ice cream here, the product they are putting out is very good. They also sell pizza. I’ve never had a slice here, but it sure looked and smelled pretty good. Might have to grab a slice the next time I’m in town.
