UYE Metry Bar Crawl

I can’t believe that it’s taken me over a month to write up this bar crawl. Steve was genius in planning and the bars were everything one could want in a bar in the Metrys.
I missed the first location and the eats since I had a family obligation but I did get to experience 3 out of the 4 bars + karaōke + late night eats AND chauffeuring Joel around in the wee hours.
Great fun with a good turn out of folks. The bars were… interesting and I’ll review them on their own.

I work pretty close to all the bars that were visited on this crawl but I live in the Garden District so the only Metry bars I usually ever end up at are those in my burb friends areas around Metairie Road and sometimes Vet’s so this was an opportunity to visit some places I would have probably never have visited otherwise.
We started out at Colby’s which was well within my comfort zone as I sometimes eat lunch at the nearby Randazzo’s restaurant so I had seen this joint before and wondered what it was like. From this point on I was entering unknown territory and wasn’t sure what to expect. Now I’ve been in some serious backwoods roadhouses and juke joints where groups of peckerwoods etc. wanted to whip my ass because I smiled too much or stood too close to something or they didn’t know me etc. so I was confident I could handle most of what Metry could throw at me and besides most folks in the area are generally pretty friendly but I had some heightened caution being a virgin to the area night scene. The next stop at C Beavers was actually a nice surprise as it was a nice time warp back to the 1970’s and I felt pretty groovy in there and I enjoyed watching Steve’s excellent flirtation skills with the ladies. My mind got totally blown and my boundaries pushed from this point forward as we entered the world of Pair of Dice, Devil’s Bayou and Joe’s Caddy Corner as I have driven past the strip mall where these joints were all located and I had always assumed this area was just destitute and deserted as I had only seen them during daylight hours. Karaōke is like Kryptonite to me and this entire area was infused with the practice so I had to escape the ear shattering caterwauling along with finding this section of bars to be extra especially smokey.
Overall I really liked this learning experience and appreciate Steve and all the Unilocal crew that made it out to create a very interesting and entertaining night. I was also quite surprised by how super extreme all these bars seemed to really take their darts very seriously above and beyond the maximum level of any interest in darts I could have ever have imagined. I would probably return to Colby’s and C Beavers on my own to visit sometime but I’m not sure I’m quite ready to venture into the other world of strip mall bars we visited unless its on a non-​karaōke night.
Minus one star for being so close to my office as now I know what affordable prices they have on beer here so it makes me want more beer when I need to work and makes me even more grumpy at the ever increasing beer prices around my hood.
Tip: Make Joel do more shots and get him to record an album of love songs. It will be the perfect Festivus gift.

I must first begin this review by thanking my good buddy Steven for organizing such a fun event.
Since we went to so many different places, I will try and break it down for you by bar.
Colby’s
I don’t have much to say since as soon as I arrived we moved to the next location. It looked OK and there was a check in deal, but on to the next bar.
C-​Beavers
This bar has a hilarious name. I didn’t C any beavers, but I did enjoy some cold Shiner Bock. The DJ here was very friendly and got all excited when our large group came in. If we had stayed till midnight we could have had smoked pig, but after an hour or so we moved on to the next bar.
Pair of Dice
This bar was what I expected when I visit a Metry bar. The bar was nearly empty except for a couple of dudes with neck tattoos, a fun loving birthday girl, and a large spread of food for the previously mentioned B-​day girl. As the night progressed a karaōke DJ arrived. This was where the night started to get fun.
Joel did an amazing rendition of «I’m in Love With a Stripper» that drew rave reviews from some of the crowd. Personally I didn’t buy that he was actually in love with the stripper he was singing about, but there was definitely a strong attraction. I decided to try my hand at singing and butchered a David Allan Coe classic, but it was still fun. I would have liked it if the DJ had more BG, Hot Boys or Big Tymers, but we can’t always get what we want.
As for the food, a reliable source told me that an unnamed Unilocaler tried one of the pickles wrapped in ham. I can’t confirm this, but that sure is an interesting combination of flavors.
Joe’s Caddy Corner
This was my least favorite stop. Not only did I get to hear two awful renditions of Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock, but the chef kept shaking hands. I don’t know about you, but I would prefer a dude who is cooking food to not touch a bunch of filthy hands.
That about sums it up. I had a great time, got to hang out with great people, and got to visit an area of Metry that I cannot imagine I would have visited had it not been for this event.
When is the next one?

Much props to Elite Unilocaler Steve I. for spearheading this UYE get together… This little drunken jaunt consisted of at least 4 bars within stagger distance of each other… The area looks sketch but there were quite a few lovelys scattered amongst the various bars our group hit…
However, I’ve decided I need to check my trust meter with some of my fellow Unilocalers simply because they did nothing to stop me when I decided to sing karaōke after imbibing a sufficient amount of my adult beverage of choice! Shame on them…
This evening started at Colby’s, proceeded to C Beever’s, then Pair o’ Dice and finally Joe’s Caddy Corner… it was the last 2 locales where I was not prevented from singing karaōke and for those there to witness it my sincerest apologies!!!
It was a great time with people I’ve gotten to know and like hanging out with and some other OG Elites who I met for the first time that night… namely Larissa, Lindsay and Jen B along with her husband, Gunther… pretty sure that was his alter ego name but damn it’s the one that stuck in my head… but it was way better than my alter ego, Chauncy from Charleston!
This was one enjoyable night and the stop at Taqueria Sanchez was OUTSTANDING! Much props Steve I. for making it happen!

I had so much fun on the Metry bar crawl! I’m sorry I bailed early. I really was planning on sticking it out for all 6 bars, but alas it was not meant to be and I was getting tired come 11:30. How sad!
It was great seeing everyone: Larissa, Lindsay, Jen B and Dann, Robert, Michelle B, Jen L., John, Danon, Joel, Heather, Shannon, and of course, Steve who organized the whole thing!
I definitely don’t head out to Metry bars nearly enough. I think I had the most fun at Pair of Dice when John and Joel (separately) took the mic to sing some karaōke. I love these UYEs. I hope there’s another one soon!
