Stone Soup Cafe & Market

I really wanted to like this place, but my experience here was terrible:
1. I asked for an iced coffee. What I got was some kind of mocha frappuccino monstrosity that looked like a glass of iced chocolate milk with a huge dollop of whipped cream drizzled in chocolate syrup.
2. I didn’t drink any of it and the asked the waitress if it was possible to swap it out for just a plain, regular iced coffee. She said, «Yes, but I’m still going to have to charge you for this since I made it.» She then asked me if I wanted cream in my iced coffee, to which I replied «No thanks, I don’t want anything in it, just plain, black iced coffee.» Then she asked me if I wanted whipped cream on top and once again I said «Nope, thanks, just black.» So she brought me what looked like iced coffee, but tasted like a combination of coffee & super sweet iced tea. It was awful and undrinkable.
3. My friend ordered veggie quiche and I ordered quiche Lorraine with a biscuits and a side of fruit. Both quiches were lukewarm with rubbery crust and both biscuits were hard and cold. The fruit cups were different (hers was composed of melon and strawberries and mine was all pineapple and strawberry) and the fruit looked like it was on its last leg. The quiche had obviously just been microwaved, and I’m almost certain the biscuits were day-​olds.
4. I found three short, black hairs on my plate. It looked like animal hair, not human. SO gross.
5. Lastly, and this is, admittedly, a very nitpicky complaint and the least of the problems we had at Stone Soup, but quiche Lorraine consists of bacon, onions, and Gruyère/​Swiss cheese. The quiche I was served had spinach in it… that is not quiche Lorraine. Also, it looked like a Chicago-​style pizza pie (like with crust over the top).
So, we didn’t finish our food and asked for the check. We didn’t bring any of this to the attention of our server because we assumed she’d have the same response as with the iced coffee («I still have to charge you since it was made.») All in all, it was a terrible, disappointing experience and I would definitely not go back.

I asked for iced coffee and instead I got what looked like a mocha frappuccino. I’ve never had an experience at any restaurant or coffee shop where I had to specify «don’t add chocolate sauce, milk, and whipped cream» when I ordering iced coffee. And what good would it have done to speak with management that has established a policy which forces a customer to pay for a drink they didn’t even order? Good luck keeping this hot mess in business.

This place is so cute and wonderful! Biscuits are to die for and the tea was delicious! Good hearty, stick to your ribs kind of breakfast!

We looked on Unilocal for about an hour and found this place and decided to give it a try… OMG it was amazing I ordered the Brunch special of cinnamon roll French toast and it was amazing. You definitely don’t need any syrup on it. My friend ordered the western omelette she said the ham was good but she thought they overcooked the peppers. She also got the biscuits and sausage gravy and we both agreed it was good. We are firm believers in calories don’t count on vacation so we ordered the crepes with strawberry butter and they were really good as well… no we didn’t eat all the crepes and biscuits and gravy lol we are so full it’s ridiculous lol
The service is very slow. So savor your water or coffee we’ve been here an hour and only saw our waitress one time.

Awesome food and service! We enjoyed the Slap Yo Mama Gumbo, Stone Soup, Grilled Chicken Philly sandwich, Grilled Asian Salmon, Blackened Catfish Acadian and some side salads. Everything was delicious! The food all around us looked delicious too. Many were enjoying breakfast and brunch items. There was the bonus of live music on Sunday at lunchtime. A great spot! This place is underrated.

Gave this place two tries. As may reviewers noticed the service was prompt and friendly, and the coffee was quite good. Unfortunately, the food is simply terrible. We nibbled at omelette’s weighed down with massive quantities of cheap cheddar cheese, pasty hash browns, and stale toast. But it was other food items that caused me to complain to the waitress. The sausage and biscuits was so overcooked as to be comical. The waitress nodded knowingly and said several other tables had complained too. When the manager came over to apologize and take this off our bill I recognized him as the man working the hostess station. Really, man, you need to get back kitchen and keep them from sending out crap «food» to the paying customers.

Well most of our party ordered an «omelet» entrée. It was disappointing that we got runny eggs and one of us even a piece of paper from the slice of jack cheese.

The service is terrible! We did get seated right away, but then waited over 15 minutes and no one ever came to our table. They weren’t even busy. Walked out and went to tart. Much better choice.

This place deserves more than the 3.5 stars it currently has. They have everything and it’s all delicious! I had the veggie omelette today which was very good. I have to say that the omelettes here shouldn’t be compared with the style served at brother juniper’s. These look and taste more like the ones you’d make at home for yourself. I’ve had lunch here before and was happy with that visit as well. I believe I got a salmon salad and a sausage and cheese plate, both were delicious!

Just landed in Memphis on Friday February 12 with my BF and his cousin. This place was across the street from the hostel we were staying at. I had the corned beef hash and fruit bowl. The corned beef was great fresh chunks of corned beef and has browns. I asked for my eggs scrambled. Not sure what that folded egg was. The sriracha tasted weird like there was tabasco mixed in??? And the fruit bowl wasn’t very fresh. Service was excellent and decent coffee.

I’ve been here for lunch before and I thought it was ok. Today, I went for breakfast and it was awesome. I got some cathead biscuits to go. At first, I thought they were a little too pricey, but with the amount of meat on them, it was worth it. I shared with friends. I ate the ham one, and the ham was great. Everyone liked their food. To go order was fast as lightning, so that was a plus. It was crowded, too, but my food came out quick. I’ll be back.

During my second visit to Stone Soup I am not quite as impressed as I was the first time.
I ordered the same thing as I did last time (didn’t even realize it until I read my last review!). My veggie quiche was very salty, which I was not a huge fan of, however it was still edible. My fruit cup tasted good and fresh, which is a plus for sure. My breakfast also came with a biscuit, which looked terrific but lacked flavor and was a bit hard.
My boyfriend had the cinnamon roll French toast, which was pretty good if you like sweets. He also had a side of bacon, which he said was terrific.
Service was fantastic! As soon as we set down we were asked for our drink order, and when he came back with our drinks he was ready to take our order. Hadley waited for our food either.
Overall it was an enjoyable breakfast, I’ll just be trying something else next time we go.

This is a cute little restaurant in the heart of Midtown. It definitely has a home vibe to it as the restaurant is in an house. I went there for bunch twice so far and the food has been good. The first time I order two eggs, bacon, hash browns and a biscuit and the second time I got a BLT and chip. The service was very good as they were attentive and very nice.

I can never understand why patrons don’t just LOVE this place! Country ham and eggs, all the quiches, yummy coffee and mounds of hash browns– what don’t you love? When surrounding breakfast favorites have hour+ wait or when I need a serene place for a nice long talk with a best friend, I come here. Every time I’ve come there is a soothing guitar player playing classic favorites and the wait staff are always bubbly and friendly.

Had lunch there and was very pleasantly surprised by their vegan offerings. I had the pick 4 vegetable sides plates and they all were really good! I had the roasted green beans, mashed potatoes, kale salad and Brussels sprouts salad. Definitely try the Brussels sprouts and the kale salads. Super Yummy!

We visited Stone Soup midmorning on a Sunday. Service was solid, if a bit harried and inefficient. Coffee was good, food came out quickly. That’s where things fell apart. If I’m below the Mason Dixon, I expect a certain level of quality when it comes to biscuits. Stone Soup Café failed spectacularly. My biscuit was inedible. Dry, dense, borderline stale and utterly flavorless. Eggs were fine, bacon was delicious. I don’t think we’ll give it another shot. I really prefer to spend my money at small, local establishments and absolutely love going out to breakfast, but sadly, Bob Evans delivers better quality and consistently.

The food at this place was great. It wasn’t anything super fancy – mostly just your standard American breakfast classics – but it was done really well. The portions are generous and everything was tasty.
The ambiance was also great– the place is in a restored old house in very nice neighborhood and has a family feel.
I would’ve given Stone Soup a five-​star rating, but the service was terrible. Out waitress couldn’t remember anything and hardly checked on us. And only half our food came out at first. We had to flag someone down to get the rest of it. Though it didn’t seem to be busy, the kitchen was also quite slow.
So overall – great food, great atmosphere, awful service.

Yes, love the awesome service of the servers but especially food am able to enjoy. I love Stone Soup on two bus lines during the week. Keep up great service!

I love coming to this place for brunch on the weekends. It’s such a cozy little establishment (actually used to be a house that people lived in once upon a time) and the servers are very nice and friendly. Southern comfort food and homy atmosphere.
I love their food and their prices are pretty fair. I also love their coffee. Tons of options on the menu (including vegan options!) and everything I’ve had so far has hit the spot. I love their omelettes, hashbrowns, biscuits, and veggie sausage. One thing I always get there is the 2 eggs plus 2. One of my favorite items on the menu. You get 2 eggs cooked any way you like, with 2 sides and a biscuit or toast. All for a really good price (a little over $ 7).
I should mention that this isn’t a fancy brunch place so don’t expect the food to be sophisticated and exploding with flavors that will blow your mind. This is the kind of place you go to when you wake up late on a weekend, hungover, wishing your mom was right down the street so you can just pop on over for some breakfast at her place.
I also find this place very convenient because they stay open till 3pm for weekend brunch. They have their own parking (super tiny though) but if there is no space available, just park somewhere down the street. They also have their own little shop inside where they sell some baked goods, honey, coffee, t-​shirts, postcards, and other fun local little things.
One last thing to keep in mind is that when the weather isn’t horribly muggy and hot, they have outdoor seating which I love! There’s also a farmer’s market that goes on every weekend right across the street if you’re into that kind of thing!

Really just another mediocre breakfast experience. This is my second visit and I was underwhelmed. The biscuits are big and beautiful, but pretty dry and dense. The hash browns tasted and looked like they had been cooked early this morning and just placed on a warm spot of the griddle or under a heat lamp until served – the same with the onion and peppers in the omelette. The cherry cobbler was also disappointing; however, we did love the bacon! Their sausage gravy is pretty tasty as well.
One thing that was bewildering, was that they sell these great homemade jams, but serve basic store bought jelly. I couldn’t believe the server when he told me that the jelly was not the jams they sell.

Ok. I just can’t. I want to rate this restaurant 4 stars because the service is so friendly, and the location is ideal, and the house’s exterior is so cute.
But … on repeated visits, the food is really hit-​or-​miss, and more often recently it’s a «miss.» The fruit cup has been unacceptable on more than one occasion and, again, though the servers are quick and kind about exchanging it, this really should never happen, period. Today my scrambled eggs were both unscrambled (whites and yolks distinct on the plate) and undercooked, leaving a slimy trail on my plate. The stoneground grits were cooked well, but unseasoned. Fruit, eggs, and grits just aren’t that hard to make taste delicious … Especially for a breakfast spot!
Stone Soup has all of the ingredients to make an awesome restaurant, but the kitchen has to do better at the basics.

Stone Soup is another restaurant that we have eaten at several times, but neglected to leave a review until now.
This particular visit was a Saturday morning at 9:30 AM. It has plenty of inside and outside seating. The outside seating overlooks the Cooper Young farmers market (Saturdays).
My wife had the French toast and I had the two eggs, hash browns & toast.
They use fresh made bread for their toast and the pastries are all made in house, as are their other items. My wife thought the French toast was a little soggy on the inside, aka, cooked at too high of a temp, leaving the outside cooked and the inside undercooked — have to be cautious of this when eggs are involved.
The hashbrowns were fresh made and tasted okay. The scrambled eggs could have been cooked just a few seconds longer on this day. I’ve had the biscuits before, but really prefer just to have toast here.
The server was friendly and attentive.
Overall, I like the location and the service, I’m just not overwhelmed by the breakfast here. I do admit that I should come at other times to try some other menu items.
Note that it is very hard for me to give over three stars for breakfast. For me, three stars means the food was as expected or average and I’ll work up or down from there based service or vise-​versa.

Ahhh the elusive half star… I wish I could give this place 3.5 stars but I’ll round up because the place is precious and the prices are great…
For starters (and as I’ve mentioned in the last sentence), this place is seriously adorable. I’m a known sucker for houses turned into restaurants — they get me every time. It oozes charm and is in Cooper-​Young (my favorite neighborhood at the moment) — win-​win!
Our waitress, Evelyn, was a total doll and super attentive without being annoying — another win!
And my vegetable soup was deliciously fresh albeit extremely hot. (I’m impatient for things to cool, what can I say? I’d rather wait for it to cool out of sight than in front of me — I’ll just burn my tongue because it is there and I have to eat it!) And the cornbread ohhhhhhhhh myyyyyyyyyy — just another reason to be grateful for living in the south.
Now here is where I start leaning towards the 3, my Caesar wrap was not very special… in fact, I just didn’t like it. The chicken was OK and there was enough cheese but overall… nope. And the waitress even recommended it when I asked her if I should get the wrap of the club sandwich. Wishing I had gone with my original inclination. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the chips… they are the cheap kind you get in bulk… way too greasy and gross.
Anyways, Ms. Werner V. (my dining partner) absolutely loved her chicken sandwich and I loved everything else I had so I know I just ordered the wrong thing. Definitely looking forward to going back to try something else. The southern, down-​home atmosphere alone is worth it.
