Otherlands Coffee Bar & Exotic Gifts

otherlands just became one of my fav coffeeshop not just because it has a well shaded and well fanned patio, nor is it because it has great cold brew at a very reasonable price, but because it has AN AMPLE AMOUNT OF OUTLETS!!! and an ample amount of desk space!!! this place has like 3 rooms and has enough space to host your friends and their friends. there’s even 2 public computers for those that forgot theirs and need to log on real quick. i’ve even seen people play timed chess matches inside before! i bring my dog sometimes and stay and do work out on the patio and he gets TONS of attention (if your dog is feeling a bit under the weather, bring him/​her here for some great compliments and scratchies from friendly strangers!)
vibe: hipster, colorful, chill, #berniebro’d (im writing this in 2016), well AC’d, ample natural light, great for instagrammers, etc.
for someone who studies at coffeeshops or does random work outside of my house, you really need somewhere that has ENOUGH DESK SPACE for you to spread out your crap. check.
perfect amount of outlets. check.
real chairs with back support! (not all coffee shops have this you guys). check.
great drinks to choose from (Tea, coffee, mixed coffee type drinks, smoothies, etc). check.
snacks on deck. (cookies!) check.
patio is dog friendly and has a fan! and is shaded! check.
great location in town. check.
doesn’t break the bank. check.

This is the most «neighborhood» neighborhood coffee shop I’ve ever been in. Everyone seemed to know each other and had a kind word to say to each other.
As for a work space, I spent three days working here while in town for some medical testing. Their wifi is fast and reliable, their workspaces are set up really well (three separate rooms of varying temperatures!), and they have extension cords and power strips everywhere. On day three, I think I only ended up buying a glass of iced tea to atone for the many hours I was camped out that day, but no one once seemed to care that I was being a squatter for the day.
The sandwiches are totally average, but at least you’re not paying a premium for them like some places. And I love that I can dig a quarter out of the bottom of my purse and impulse buy a fig newton or thin mint cookie if I need a quick pick-​me-​up.
I’ll almost definitely be back here when I come back for my kidney donation. They’ve created a great space here and I want to see it continue to be successful.

Otherlands is a great Midtown treasure. The zucchini bread toasted with a tiny butter, the hot flavorful coffee, the inviting ambience, and the diverse mix of patrons make this Memphis landmark an enjoyable spot to relax, study, converse, or eat. When you have a need for a present for someone who enjoys unique stuff, you can not go wrong in their Exotic Gift shop.

I would first like to state that I am not a fan of coffee. That being said, when I ordered my drink, I did not realize I would literally be ordering an actual shot of bitterness. Regardless, I drank my friend’s drink to make up for my lack of coffee knowledge and really enjoyed his drink! The atmosphere here is really tight and clustered but it gives a home-​y feel.

Absolutely love this place. The environment is great, the WiFi is great, the food is great! You get a free coffee refill, which I wasn’t expecting. The place is huge, with plenty of seating. I just loved the environment, so chill and quiet, but lively at the same time with great music playing. I definitely recommend this place for coffee, breakfast/​lunch, and just a great relaxing time.

I haven’t been a Memphian for well over a year, but just for fun am going and leaving reviews of the places I used to frequent. My previous reviews stand, I still think it’s overall a good coffeeshop with decent coffee and neat things for sale. However, I’m removing a star due to the open smoking policy on the patio — irksome to nonsmokers, and it even wafted inside, as the door was open and shut constantly. Also kitchen area looked like a bit of a ‘scrappy’ operation; not sure how clean it really was.

Huge space. Adequate coffee. Nothing special. Very vegetarian/​hippie/​fair trade feel to the place. Lots of incense burning when you walk in. Patio in the back.

Otherlands is a cosy coffee bar in midtown Memphis. The bagels, cheese toast, and coffee are always fresh and delicious, not to mention the secret dill sauce they offer. Most of the items are housemade and they have many organic options as well as kid-​friendly drinks, such as organic chocolate milk and hot apple cider for those wintry days. The deck has plenty of tables and is partially covered, perfect for a hot cup of java. The restaurant is dog-​friendly (deck) and the staff always friendly and prompt. Otherlands is definitely a Memphis treasure.

I really enjoy checking out different coffee shops, and this one is a keeper. Big patio with plenty of seating, tons of seating inside as well as lots of choices. I got a mocha latte (my tried and true yummy coffee choice).
Pros: lots of artwork, artsy furniture, plenty of seating, priced decently, great place to get lost in your own thoughts, chat with friends, read, or study
Con: kind of overwhelming at first because there were a lot of people there.
I started to sit on the patio, but there were a few people smoking, so I went back inside.
parking horrible for someone who is not used to the city (the parking lot is small and the spaces are slanted, so I had to back out all through the parking lot.)
I would still come here due to the atmosphere. Perhaps I should get better at parking in the city.

Eclectic coffee and tea shop. They had about 5 different teas-​mostly chai or ginger, 6 or 7 different expresso, brewed coffee, lemonade– they have soy milk– yeah! They have a small food menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner– I had a vegan bean and rice burrito– it’s ok– I probably will not it again and little too bland for me —Donnie had a grilled veggie burger– now that was good!’
I like the «feel» of the the place– different rooms to sit in with couches, chairs– we were told when they close at 8:00pm we are welcome to seat out on deck as long as we want. Oh, and free Wi-​fi. Will go again

Tried out the local tuna melt sandwich and veggie sandwich and both of them were pretty good. In the place of chips I would rather have salad or sweat potato fries. Coffee — latte, I would rate it 3 out of 5 Starts.

Great service. Lots of locals. Amazing coffee. Good food-​must try cinnamon toast! Also has a small gift shop where exotic gifts like incense and vintage postcards are sold. Will definitely come again when I am in Memphis!!!

The muffins have a strange taste– I’m not sure if they were old or packaged while still warm? Not recommended. The macchiato wasn’t really what I was hoping for either. BUT their regular coffee is delicious, the service is fantastic, and the eclectic atmosphere reminded me SO much of Hawaii! I highly recommend sitting on the patio with a good cup of coffee and the free wifi :) Note: They do not accept Discover or American Express.

This was my first visit to Otherlands and it is definitely a coffee bar where you can sit and search the web with their free wi-​fi. I went to meet with a photographer to get a CD of engagement photos for my son and as I was quite hungry, I ordered the Turkey/​cheese melt on whole wheat with an unsweetened tea. The sandwich was so delicious and had the perfect combination of turkey, cheese, & tomato, with I’m assuming their own sauce that was a great addition. They seem to have a lot of regulars that sit for hours with their computers and I found it odd that several of them hadn’t ordered anything but were just sipping on free water. Oh well, guess that’s what a coffee bar is!

Two words describe this place laid back and unpretentious. If you want a nice place to read and/​or study this is it! Most coffee shops are too noisy. My mocha was perfect. Their prices are more than reasonable My favs are the turkey spinach cheese grits and salmon plate. Be advised this place is pet friendly on the patio & some dogs aren’t as friendly as you would hope. Theres a gift shop that sales locally handmade crafts.

So far my fav coffee shop in memphis aside Tamp &Tap.
Triple Americano with extra steamed vanilla soy. Made perfectly and enjoyed with a delicious piece of carrot cake.
I like the VERY rustic vibe — although everything is super old it’s clean.
They have the best seating for the typical coffee shop. Lots of space for groups and families. Big tables and small. First coffee shop I felt most comfortable with bringing in son with his monster stroller.
The service was good. Simple concept of order food at counter that is brought to you but drinks are called out when ready for pick up at the counter. Which I was not aware of. As a first timer would have been helpful to know that.
I loved how they have homemade items and a lot of options for vegans and vegetarians. And overall just stuff done the right way from scratch. My husband and I — along with our 6 month old son enjoyed our Saturday morning here — having breakfast /​a good cup of coffee while looking out onto cooper stiffening to old soulful tunes on the radio.

The owner is pretty horrible, but the place is pretty neat. She has a forum for local musicians to play their music & you can also get good food and coffee. Very midtown for sure.

Lots of meeting space! I think this one of my favorite hangouts! I try telling my friends out this place. The food is great!

This coffee house was nice, and I like the fact that there were several different rooms to choose from. This might be a cool location to hang out for a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday. It wasn’t a standout for me though. I thought the coffee drinks and hot chocolate were just ok.

My favorite coffee place in town. I’m a little bit weirdo, little bit hipster-​y, little bit artsy, little bit nerdy… I feel like this crowd is my people. I like the other local coffee places, but I just feel at home here. The comfy chairs and mismatched furniture help with that too. It just feels so worn-​in and welcoming. I meet with a group of Memphis transplants and couch surfers here every Sunday afternoon and it’s quickly become a highlight of my weekend.
Honestly, the plain coffee is just so-​so. I’m not picky though, so I’m happy to drink it. A free refill doesn’t hurt. The ginger lemonade zinger is where they really shine. My first time in I heard person after person ordering it, so the next time I went for it. What a great decision! If you like tart tea (made with hibiscus) and lemonade, you’ll love it too. It’s enough to pucker your lips… I’ve never had another drink even close to this. I haven’t had any of their food, so I can’t comment on that, but it sure looks good whenever I see someone ordering. I had a homemade energy bar and it was super fresh and tasty – lots of different fruits smooshed together into bar form.
