Ken’s Moving and Storage

Had a horrible experience with Ken’s, more so with management than with the movers themselves. My husband, baby and I were moving from our apartment and they sent two men and a small van. A van to move a family of three! Multiple trips had to be made. Job started at 8:15AM and wasn’t done until after 5PM. My husband and I even helped move some things to make it go faster because our building doesn’t allow any moving after 5. It was truly a terrible day. Price was twice the estimate and when we called management they wouldn’t budge. Completely insane. Never had an experience like this before. Please be careful with this company.

I’ve had others recommend Ken’s, so they apparently do a fine job sometimes, but I would strongly recommend against using Ken’s if you are moving in Manhattan. Their «over the phone» estimate proved to be HALF of what they charged me. They sent two men and a van (!) to move a family of three instead of a truck, which of course necessitated two trips, which of course increased the cost substantially. And my bookcase, which was one of only two large items moved, was scratched up terribly. If you do use Ken’s, make sure they give an in-​person review of your items, and make sure you find out in advance how many men (and what vehicle) will be used. The team is actually pretty nice and relatively easy with which to engage, but my experience left a lot to be desired.

Why didn’t we use them sooner?! We’ve moved three times in the past 5 years — ourselves — and we are kicking ourselves for not finding out about Ken’s Moving sooner! A coworker recommended them and they did not disapoint. They were prompt, friendly, professional, respectful of our belongings, fast, hardworking, impressive, and very reasonable in price! We had them move 1 bedroom’s worth of furniture into an apartment on the 3^rd floor of a walk up — all under 3 hours — incredible! We will never move ourselves again — when the time comes we will call Ken’s!

I didn’t even use this company because of how sketch it was just getting a estimate, oh wait a didn’t even get a estimate.
«Ken» asks for the addresses to and from with also a list of the things they will be moving, and also just regular moving information, flights, elevator, totally normal. I’ve lived in Manhattan for 5 years and have moved plenty, I know moving companies.
After I submit all the information, I get an email back saying he can offer 3 movers with a truck for $ 120 a hour (high in my opinion) and also I could have just read that off your website, that’s not a estimate, that’s your service prices.
So I email back, saying how long do u think it will take? then I get this b*llshit response about how they DO NOT GIVE ESTIMATES, because of so many variables, like weather, and parking, and traffic, and how long it’s gonna take to do everything…
1) what was the point in making me send u a list of everything, and my addresses if ur just gonna send me service prices
2) I only asked to wrapped three items, he acted like he couldn’t estimate that? Like what?
3) I gave my addresses, so if u can’t estimate driving time by using GOOGLE in 1 minute, you would see it less that 30 minutes and all highway, so it shows u did nothing with my addresses and sending u that information was pointless completely
4) I have never, ever had a moving company not give me a estimate, ever! EVER! That is a huge scam move. It’s like going in blindly and then they can do whatever and charge you whatever for whatever «reasons»
5) moves cross country have estimates, but apparently moving from Harlem to Woodside cannot be predicted, there are too many variables? (Can u hear the sarcasm)
6) and also they require a deposit, to «hold your reservation»

PLEASE DO NOT USE KEN’S!!! Despite Ken doing the estimate himself, the final price was $ 500 more than the estimate. Ken grossly underestimated the number of boxes we would have and then blamed us and LIED saying that we told him to lower the number if boxes on the estimate. That is absolutely ridiculous because we were VERY clear that we had a ton of stuff and had no idea how many boxes we would have. We would NEVER have told him to lower the number of boxes on the estimate! If you do hire them, be aware that if Ken writes «As per customer» on the estimate, he will later use that to insist that YOU said that number of boxes, even though you didn’t. He seems to do that to cover himself for when he messes up so he can blame the customer.
Worse than that, a large bag full of electronics and tools that we moved ourselves to avoid damage went «mysteriously missing» from our basement during the move.
Lastly, the workers did work hard but they were extremely messy, leaving garbage from the food and drinks we provided all over our garage, our driveway and our neighbor’s driveway. It was like cleaning up after a frat party after they left. I would NEVER hire them again!!!

Again, I must warn people never, ever use Ken’s moving & storage, in particular if you are a female. They take advantage of woman, demand a Tip, change their quoted price, destroy your furniture, call you names if you accuse them of any wrong-​doing and refuse to finish the job. They leave you stranded or hold some of your valuables if you do not comply with their wishes. Ask them where their business is and you will find out that they work form a basement of a private home– very unprofessional!!! be forewarned!!!

I have used Ken’s three times – and had been happy with them up until my most recent move. I had to keep most of my items in storage for several months, which I did through Ken’s. However, when they moved all of my stuff into my new apartment, a big piece of furniture never arrived. When I called the office to follow-​up and ask where my missing piece of furniture was, Ken instantly went on the defensive and started accusing me of not telling the guys it had to go into storage in the first place. They would not reimburse me for this CUSTOM piece of furniture because I had signed the receiving slip when the movers left. I feel like I was scammed and ripped off by their carelessness and reassurances – they are reasonable, until you complain, then iron gates get slammed in your face. I feel betrayed.

We just used Ken’s Moving 2 weeks ago. We relocated from Nassau to Queens (we are originally from Queens). My father-​in-​law recommended them, so we called. We were very pleased. They were fast and efficient. They worked very hard and were very careful with our belongings.

The person who answers the phone John or Ken (because his name keeps changing) and the side kick Karen that I spoke to, very rude not professional. I do not recommend at all.

The best! Efficient, professional, and reasonable.

I’ve referred many friends and they’ve all been very pleased.

The movers did everything fast. All my stuff was safe and they moved everything fine. I even got a Thank You card in the mail which was a nice touch.
My complaints were:
They were at least 45 minutes late, a phone call would have been nice telling me that they were held up by the previous job.
The «main» mover guy needed to let me know that «most people tip us». This annoyed me to no end. It was something that needed not be said because I am neither an idiot or an asshole. Also it totally says in the contract, tips are not required but of course people tip, it is only natural.
I felt that he wouldn’t have said that to a man, but since I am a woman I felt it was a little bit on the intimadation side.
I think maybe they might be a tad overpriced for certain services.
If I need to move again I would probably look up quotes from other companies and compare instead of going straight back to Ken’s.
