The Sock Hop

This store has a great selection of cool men’s and women’s socks and tights, and also makes bespoke men’s dress shirts. My husband has had two shirts made here, the most recent one for our wedding (Their tailor embroidered our wedding date into the collar). Highly recommend this place.

This little spot has an awesome variety of designer socks. They also carry ‘This Night,’ my favorite brand of socks! They’re made in Pennsylvania and they are the best quality of sock. They will last at least a year, if not more-​even after several washes. Fabric does not pill, which means they must be super power socks.

It’s a family business and everyone there is professional and helpful! The shop is full of charm and character. It’s a must stop for both men and women.

i just traveled to NY and it was so cold, I really enjoyed this shop’s customer service because they gave me what i needed at an affordable price which is hard to find in Manhattan. and they are stocked up !!! thank you guys.

I bought a pair of suspenders from Sock Hop 3 or 4 years ago, and they told me to bring in any pair of pants I wanted to wear them with and they’d install the buttons for me, free of charge. I only got around to bringing in a pair of jeans yesterday, and after all this time, they still happily installed the buttons. Their select of socks is awesome, they’ve got a great array of interesting local bands, and Vincent and his team are genuinely friendly, fun, and cool people. More stores could take a lesson from these guys on customer service and general enthusiasm for their craft. Five stars!

In the early 80’s I interned at a custom shirt shop in Chicago. The owner and I lost touch but before that, he made my husband custom shirts. They were beautiful. I tried locating the shop owner over the years without any luck. Last fall, I took a chance and googled him, Reza Nasserbakht. A photo of him with two of his sons popped up and he is making shirts again at the Sock Hop! This was the only way to get my husband to New York. So, we went to New York and saw Reza and met his son, Ted. We ordered shirts. The shirts arrived today and are beautiful. The quality and craftsmanship are outstanding. Also, the shop is charming.

This place is fantastic. I first came here a year ago looking for well-​fitting socks and eventually upgraded to having shirts made as well. The brands and fabrics they offer are very broad in terms of color and cost. They have taken the time to walk me through finding durable alternatives to wool in the summer and caring for my socks, as well as advised me on what shirt fabrics to choose for varying temperatures (business field trip in summer vs freezing church wedding in winter), how to have a shirt made in general so you sweat less, and the best places to have shirts cleaned in the city. These guys know their stuff and if you trust them, they will deliver a smart, beautiful product.

I was in the neighborhood over the summer and stopped in to the Sock Hop to buy a pair of socks. While I was there, I noticed that they offered bespoke shirts, and I had been looking for a new shirt-​maker as I recently moved to the city. The guys in the shop were nice, and I thought it was great to find a family-​run shirt-​maker that makes the shirts on the premises, so I thought I’d give it a go.
I had a few specific requests — wide collar, fitted body, not too much fabric on the ‘tail’ (so that it doesn’t bunch up and hang out), monogram on the left cuff, and a slightly shorter left sleeve to accommodate my watch. No big deal (at least not for my old shirt-​maker in San Francisco).
I paid $ 280, and the guys at the Sock Hop agreed to make me a shirt to my desired specification — and once this ‘pattern’ was made to my satisfaction, I would place an order for an additional 10 shirts. It was made pretty clear to me that the tailor would make as many adjustments as needed to this initial shirt /​pattern to ensure it met my requirements.
Unfortunately, that turned out to be a false statement. When I went in for my first fitting a few week later, the shirt was far too short (everything else was fine — apart from the monogram… their sewing machine cannot do monograms well — something they told me AFTER the fact), so the tailor said he would add additional length. I went back a couple of weeks later to collect the amended shirt, and it still felt quite short, but I said I would take it home and try it out. I wore it to work the next day and every time I bent down, it came untucked, so I basically walked around for the whole day with my shirt hanging out.
So I went back and explained to the tailor that the shirt was still too short and it was unwearable in its current state, to which he abruptly replied «I have already made it longer once and this time I gave you the length you asked for». At my first fitting when I told him it was too short, he asked me how much length to add. That felt like a strange question coming from an experienced shirt-​maker, but nonetheless I guided him, assuming that (given his experience) he’d tell me if it was still going to be too short to wear (I mean, if you pay nearly $ 300 for a bespoke shirt, part of added-​value is expert guidance on what can and cannot be done!). In any case, it was a hostile response compared to how nice he had been when he took my money and promised to make me a bespoke shirt according to my specifications!
While I’m annoyed that I spent $ 280 to produce a shirt that I can’t wear, I’m just glad that I didn’t hand over $ 3000 immediately, because I’d have a whole pile of expensive shirts that I wouldn’t be able to wear! I definitely would not recommend the Sock Hop for a bespoke shirt (maybe they do a better job with socks!).
I ended up buying my shirts from Turnbull & Asser on E57th St (
). It’s pricier and it and takes a bit longer (they send the shirts to be cut in England), but the service is incredible and I couldn’t be happier with the sample shirt I recently received.

The Sock Hop is unique because everything gets done in house, Reza, Vincent and Ted measure you, talk to you and most importantly listen to you… They make the shirt onsite in their store (and if you know about the custom shirt business, you know how hard this is to find, the shirt doesn’t go half way around the world).
The turn around time is ridiculous; almost un-​believable! I got my shirt done in less than a week, and when i tried it on, it was perfect. No alterations needed, nothing. One fitting and it fits like a glove.
The price is well worth it, still less than say a PINK made to order shirt.
This is truly a Gem — the clean lines and fit on my shirt reflect some thing special!
What takes all this up a notch is the fact that the guys here are warm and friendly.
Thanks Guys! I cant wait to phase out all my shirts — my quest for the perfect shirt has finally ended.

This store is all at once old school and sexy. Whenever you watch a movie that’s a period piece and you wish you could get those little detail pieces — this place has them and you don’t even have to wear used footwear. We’re not just talking interesting baubles– Everything for sale there (socks, luggage, furniture, etc) are well thought out pieces that are perfectly constructed. I definitely didn’t feel cool enough for anything in there, because I am one of those people that wear my glasses out of laziness. But I am going definitely going there every time I am in the neighborhood– its that kind of eclectic place that is worth the time to browse.
