Saxbys Coffee

It’s so sad-​this just closed! I loved coming here to work on Friday mornings. I just went by and it was all closed and gone for good :(As much as I love Starbucks too, Saxby’s was my favorite coffee shop/​hangout on Main St. Boo!

Spent hours studying here today. Great atmosphere, good coffee and friendly staff. Will definitely be back again. It’s a million times better than Starbucks down the street.

Hands down the best place to study in Manayunk. No loud obnoxious music, well lit, good sized tables. and the best iced chais. Really I haven’t even tried anything else– I keep coming back to the chai. Its pricey, but for the atmosephere and chai, totally worth it…

Best iced tea ever. EVER. Even though it’s a chain. I love Saxby’s and I don’t care who knows it.

I’m sure it would have been great had it been open. I’m sure I would have picked another place to meet my friend, had I read the previous reviews more carefully.

The comfy seats up front where you can relax while watching the main st crowds pass by is a plus, as is the friendly service. Free Wi-​Fi is nice, but is now a standard in coffee shops. Everything else is nothing to write home about. Still if you are looking for a non-​bar location to meet, its hours and atmosphere will do just fine.

I had a few negative experiences here when it was further down Main St so I avoided it for a while. I have been back to the new location several times and am happy to say it is much improved! The staff is very friendly, the coffee is good and the hot chocolate is delicious. The place is comfortable and clean. I will definitely be back.

Amazing.
I love working and studying at Saxby’s. The coffee is perfectly strong… love the pumkin! The staff is awesome and very personable. I had an injury this summer and was on a liquid diet. The owners put together a special drink for me and made sure the entire staff knew about it so that I wouldn’t even have to ask for it. (my jaw was wired shut, so talking wasn’t the easiest!)
There is plenty of seating which is perfect. Free internet is awesome. Great background music. The FROYO is ridiculously perfect… both flavors! They support local artists with allowing them to display artwork. Fair prices. Great window seats for people watching. The list goes on and on!
My only potential complaint is the number of electrical outlets. Never been a problem for me, but I have seen others not able to plug in laptops.
Make sure to get their rewards card and get some free java too!

This place closes at 10pm. We were looking for a place to sit and chat, so we were about to head out. However, the barista talked us into trying a froyo.
This was an excellent choice. The chocolate froyo was standard and forgettable, but the white froyo was a tart and tasty option! Plus, because it was closing time, she hooked us up with multiple toppings on the house.
We ended up splitting a medium with a couple of toppings, including blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry.
We both got to talking about how rare this was in this day and age. I mean, each topping has a very small marginal cost, and the unprompted gesture spoke volumes about how well they want to treat their customers. Plus, the froyo was pretty good too!
Will definitely be back.

They just moved and their new location is awesome! AND THEY FINALLY HAVE A/​C! I’ve missed saxby’s and their free internet :)

A great spot for a cup of joe and a conversation. Most of the people here are locals so it’s tough to get in and out without having some friendly banter included with your morning coffee. They have a new pancake machine which in my mind is friggin revolutionary and delicious. A rolled pancake with fresh strawberries, chocolate syrup, whipped cream and a little mango is unbelievable. Also the new froyo yougurt machine is the best for a granola strawberry yougurt. Maybe rasberries to mix it up.
But down to brass tax, the coffee is great and the Red Eye, coffe with a shot of espresso keeps me going all day long.
This place IS the coffee shop in ManAyunk, a must!

I Love this place! I must admit, I was not much of a coffee drinker when I first visited Saxby’s on main. I was meeting a friend there, who turned me onto her Saxby’s favorite, The British Islander. A bit sweet for my taste, but a tasty treat nonetheless. I informed the staff that I was, «coffee retarded,» and they have helped me navigate my initial caffienated forays.
Not only are their beverages delightful, but the staff really stands out here. Scott, the owner, goes out of his way to make you feel welcomed and he’s always helpful with suggesting something new to try. Scott also seems to carefully select his staff. They, too, are always friendly no matter how busy it is… and this place gets busy.
There is usually a diverse crowd of lap-​toppers, families, dog lovers with furry friends in hand, book worms, people watchers and the usual «beautiful people» sprinkling Main street. The beverages are great, but I mainly hang out there for the scenery and good company. Saxby’s hosts acoustic musicians, game nights and a litany of fun activities. Sitting at a table out front, sipping a large iced coffee or chocolate monkey frolatte and running into friends at Saxby’s is a great day indeed.

They have SUGAR-​FREE CHAI LATTES! So amazing & very tasty.
If there’s a Saxby’s near you make sure to get a gocard, every 11^th drink will be free.
One suggestion for the owners — please get a better sneezeguard to cover your frozen yogurt toppings — the one in place looks way too low for the fruit to sit out uncovered.

The immediate pros of Saxby’s include quality coffee, friendly staff, and lots of seating. Their new frozen yogurt and ice cream selection (plus smoothies) is perfect for warm weather, but I still find myself buying hot vanilla lattes because they’re always served perfectly. Not too sweet, but with just the right amount of vanilla. Hopefully the regularity of my purchases is noticed soon so I can just ask for «the usual».
I can actually get a lot of work done here (especially on a weekday) but it makes for great people watching as well. They’re open pretty late (10PM most nights, and I think even 11PM on weekends) which is a rarity for coffee places in Manayunk. A really delightful rarity.

** Note: As a former Starbucks partner, I am partial to good, strong coffee and was reluctant to switch to a new brand. However, after a number of negative Starbucks experiences (it’s not like the «How Starbucks Saved My Life» book folks) I was ready to give it a whirl. I love this new blend so much that I make the effort to get up early (and I am not a morning person) when I have to go to school to make my cup of coffee because I just can’t have anything else.

Chiara has hit a couple of things right in-​between the eyes about this place. This is a great place to study. They have free WiFi, comfortable new furniture, and management that is both very friendly and proactive about their approach to the store.
For example, one of the three walls in the main sitting area used to only feature one outlet. By the time I am writing this, I am told by the owner Scott — a very friendly person I might add — a outlet strip along that wall will be turned on to solve the problem of the ever-​important laptop cord bottleneck.
Another example — coffee folks don’t like the coffee here as much as Bucks, or other locals places. What do they do? They bring in a big new line of beans and blends. I’m a chai person. Their Chai is great. Bry, on the other hand, has switched to one of these new blends to get her through her Med School crunch, not bad!
Scott, the owner, goes out of his way to listen to customers and get to know repeat customers, which is very nice. I know he takes care in who he employees at this location, both from observing the staff and from his own admissions of how he likes to run things.
Finally, there aren’t a lot of places where you can request the staff to make new baked goods (even if they are only cookies) OR have them know you are a sucker for a fresh, warm, chocolate-​chip cookie and bring you one without asking!

In defense of my study haven, I would say that the positives outweigh the negatives. True, the food selection doesn’t render it a lunch or dinner destination spot. However, it does have good muffins, cheesecakes, cookies, and soups. I’ve tried them on multiple occasions. On a cold day, I look forward to my usual soy lattes. The chai and regular coffee are also good.
Perhaps my rating scale is different than others, but I definitely appreciate the seemingly personalized service I receive from this Saxby’s. The new staff and owner are always open to suggestions on how to improve the place. They also support local businesses by displaying artwork for sale from local artists.
If I want a meal, I’ll go down the street to one of the dozens of restaurants. If I want a warm, yummy coffee and a friendly, calm environment, I’ll definitely go here.

I am not a coffee snob, but there are WAY better places to enjoy a cup of joe on Main Street.
First we’ll go with positives:
1. It is a great place to study, meet a friend, or kill some time.
2. The staff and owner are very friendly.
3. They take credit cards.
4. Open later than La Colombe and Mugshots.
Unfortunately the bad outweighs the good. When Bucks closed I was a little sad. I work on Main Street and Bucks was always so convenient (I am completely unable to carry cash for some reason). But then Saxby’s opened and it seemed that little changed. Within the first month, however, things did change…
First of all, the owner has definitely been buying less food. There used to be sandwiches and salads from Le Bus, yogurts, hummus and pita, granola and trail mix, and a wider variety of baked goods. For those of us who work on Main Street these lunch items were so convenient! Slowly the treats began disappearing. They do have soup (made by a small local business), but I’m not always trusting of the freshness. I also ordered a muffin and was really disappointed when I got back to work and found that the muffin was at least one day old. TOTALLY STALE! That was the last straw for me.
The coffee is alright, but I’d rather go to Mugshots, La Colombe, or even Starbucks.

Everything Chiara’s review says is true — great place to study, friendly staff, and open late. But I have to knock my review to 4 stars b/​c I come in mainly for the coffee, and I just don’t enjoy theirs as much as Bucks County Coffee.
I’ve only had their regular brewed coffee, but it’s closer to the Starbuck’s variety in terms of taste than the BCC/​Wawa variety (my personal preference). A little on the bitter side. But still a good cup.
Great cozy coffee shop in the middle of Main St… I’m sure I“ll pop in again.
P. S. Other than the name and the actual coffee, it doesn’t look or seem any different from when Bucks County Coffee was there. Oh and later hours though — huge bonus.
