Something New Salon

I had the same exact experience as Farha!!! Purchased a groupon. They talked me out of the groupon. Charged me $ 160 AND I WAS THERE FOR 8 FREAKIN HOURS! The girl they gave me was very sweet, however, very inexperienced. The owner kept speaking down to her. I left there practically in tears just for the sheer waste of time and money, because I had to buy a box of dye and fix my hair the next day. HORRIBLE PLACE!

Awful salon, all the pedicure chairs were broken (I was told I’d be electrocuted if I tried to turn one on) so I was unable to adjust my fully upright and front-​locked chair, no massage, and a broken arm rest. The pedicure itself was mediocre. I got off easy, the friend I came with had a painful pedicure after they got cotton stuck underneath her toenail. The chairs to sit in whole drying your nails were out of a 70s horror movie. While trying to pay, I was pushed out of the way by a family so they could take Facebook pictures with the staff. After finally getting someone to let me pay, I was told there’d be a magical surcharge to be able pay by debit card. I came here to relax, but left with anxiety.

This reviewed is based on my horrendous experience at Something New, Friday, March 18^th. I will NEVER enter the doors of this Salon, again. Olga, the owner, has no clue how to treat customers and run a business. It has taken me a couple of weeks to post this review, since I felt the review needed to be based on fact not emotion. My day at the salon (10:30 am till 2:30−3 pm) ended finding out my HANDwash ONLY sweater was picked up off a chair by an employee and thrown into the washer with grungy salon towels (note: there is NOT a proper places to hang your clothing while you wear a cape.) Let’s just say… After I found out I lost the shirt off my back… I lost it. While I was standing in the middle of the salon in my undergarments, Olga, the owner, was yelling at me (yes, I was upset… and rightfully asked for compensation. I felt violated due to my personal property being destroyed plus there were several salon events leading up to this moment… scroll down.) Olga was in my face «yelling at me how rude I was … And, she will NOT apologize.» This event happened as I am paying her salon $ 150 plus tips. Did I stiff her… no. Did I NOT give tips to the people who helped me… no. I chose the high road, since she didn’t know this road. Olga couldn’t have cared less when I brought up the Salon’s terrible reviews. If she knew how to run a business, she would have been wise to say «let me take off the $ 30 conditioner we twisted your arm to pay for…» Or perhaps handing me a cape to cover my bra would have been a wise business solution. Instead she chose to fight with me in the middle of the salon while I am half dressed in front of other customers. Another employee also started yelling at me «what’s the big deal!» Yes, it was a possible mistake. A careless and rather stupid mistake, nevertheless. The incident screamed volumes about the lack of quality in the Salon. How did I get to Something New??? The simple answer is «my long time amazing colorist set up shop here!» I will follow him anywhere and did so to Something New. But after this unprofessional & borderline fraudulent experience with her Olga and her staff, I am seeking his services elsewhere. The reason I was at the Salon this day was due to my nephew’s Bar Mitzvah weekend. I went for my color which was excellent as usual. But… things went crazy by midday, since this salon does not know how to properly schedule client’s time. In addition to my color, I requested a blowout and my nails done. In addition to these requests Olga decided to aggressively tell me «I needed to have my eyebrows done.» When she said «you MUST do your eyebrows now with us …» I answered factually «I just had my eyebrows done two days prior by my long time waxer in NYC» and I was not interested. Did she stop there… nope! She asked 2X more times. BTW — At this moment, I was under the dryer having my $ 30 deep conditioner I did NOT want. Plus, I had color on my brows. Why would I be upset spending more $ for add’l subpar services/​products? Since this day was a big deal to me, I wanted to look good for the Bar Mitzvah and (haha) didn’t want drama. I had to be up in North Jersey for a 5:00 pm dinner. So when the clock striked 2:30 and I was receiving one of the worse blowouts, I was getting upset. Right before I had my hair blown out, I had asked for the stylist for body, because I wanted my hair to last till Saturday. Instead, I received the complete opposite… pin straight. I wanted some wave and even showed her my hair prior to being colored (so she would have a good idea of my hair type.) You would think this would helpful… Nope… instead she complained «how curly my hair is.» And also told me «I have been doing this for years… and I know what I am doing.» Guess what… she didn’t. At this point, I did not care about the $ or the blowout. I just cared about getting to my family dinner in honor of my nephew. So what happened… I paid my $ 150 Bill while in my bra. Important note also mentioned in other reviews: the Salon charges sales tax if you use a credit/​debit card. If you go to the NJ taxation website it states «haircuts, color etc are exempt from tax.» The Salon adds the extra charge to cover credit card fees. When I asked «why don’t you have the tax info on the desk, so people can see… I was ignored.» They are overcharging. So not only do they owe me for the sweater they ruined (they said «no bid deal… two small holes and pilling is a big deal to me for my $ 80 sweater that is going in the garbage), but the tax they are fraudulently charging. I left there in disbelief and in near tears. I drove up to North Jersey in my bra and thankfully I had jacket. I made it the hotel/​dinner with only a few minutes to spare. I first heard about Something New Salon by my sister who lives in the area and got the Magic Sleek done by Olga. She gets so many compliments about her hair and she always tells me how easy it is to manage. During my visit up from VA Beach during the Thanksgiving weekend I decided to get the Magic Sleek done. I’ve had a keratin treatment a while ago that didn’t last me too long, but because the Magic Sleek has done wonders to my sister’s hair I decided to go for it. Olga and her staff worked to make sure everything was perfect. I’m nicknamed Curly Sue so after washing my hair it is still straight and smooth. Anyone who can travel the distance or find a Magic Sleek specialist by them, it is so worth it! Thank you to everyone at Something New Salon!

Let me start by saying that I am a very positive person and never write negative reviews… However this is an exception. This is not the «something New» you are looking for.
I never heard of this place before and decided to give it a try. I purchased a groupon and had a 12pm appt. with a woman by the name of Jeanine or Jeannette (can’t remember).
I arrived on time to find out that she wasn’t there. After waiting 15 minutes for her to show up, she disappeared into the back. The woman at the front desk had to go looking for her. Ten minutes later, I was asked to have a seat at one of the chairs. While I waited, I was told she was busy with something and would be with me shortly. At 12:30, I got up to see what was going on and how much longer she would be. I found that she had just taken another client. I left and thanks to groupon got a full refund. This place is very unprofessional! Don’t waste your time, money or gas.

They did an average job with my hair. I got highlights. I only went here because I found them on groupon. They ended up charging me 70 $ more than I already paid on groupon because of some bullshit about factoring in toner for my highlights. Then the lady tried to jip me when I was paying. Count your change when you pay to make sure you’re not getting ripped off.

I purchased a Groupon for a gel manicure and pedicure. The nail technician informed me that I could only choose from a small selection of colors. The other two shelves would be an additional $ 10.00. I wanted the popular powder blue color that is very popular right now… which they did not offer. The color I did choose did not have a matching color for my pedicure. The technician barely spoke to me as I tried to make small talk… very unfriendly. The very next day, my nails started chipping. I called the salon the very next day, the receptionist replied with «what can I say?» She reluctantly penciled me in a week later! By the time I went back to the salon, nearly every nail was chipped. When I walked in, both the receptionist and nail technician asked what I had done to my nails! How absurd! I said «nothing,» I even wore gloves when washing dishes to protect my nails. So they both said «oh, do you wear gloves all the time for your job?’» I said no. So the nail technician goes and grabs the color and once again said «well if you wear gloves all the time»., omg! I said, «no I said only to wash dishes.» On the contrary, if she knew anything about nails, she would know that gloves would prolong a manicure! She asked what I wanted her to do and I responded «fix them.» She said she wasn’t going to take the polish off, so she sloppily patched them up. When she was finished, I told her that one nail was lumpy and the other one had a big bump in it. She just looked at me!!! I just walked out! I will never go back here again!!! I received no apology. Obviously their product is of poor quality and the nail technician is very inexperienced. And the worst part is I had to go 30 minutes out of my way… twice, and the very next day they start chipping again! Please stay away from this place.

I went there on account I needed a last minute color appt and the hair salon that I usually go to was booked solid. Nonetheless, I gave this a try. I used to work in salons so I knew what to expect if it was bad and what to expect if is good.
I made the mistake of not Unilocaling them. Bad move.
First, their website has a «Specials» tab that had an introductory price for new customers. It was $ 35 for single process, which I wanted to do. Go back to black. I get there, didn’t realize this was a Russian salon. No big deal except my stylist didn’t really know English. They had to translate everything to her.
I didn’t think anything of it. I was going back to black. It really isn’t that complex of a job. The stylist was actually good except there was no stylist/​client experience because she didn’t speak English. I sat there in silence. However, I will say she was very thorough, but not enough as I have spots of brown coming through the black.
The assistant was very nice. I felt like I was silent for so long that I was talking so much with the assistant. She washed me out. But unfortunately, it is almost a week later and when I shower, I still have color coming out. She did mention that she isn’t in cosmetology school or anything. It was just a side job for her.
The stylist blew me out. I go to pay. And when I made the appointment, I made sure I mentioned the prices mentioned on the website. At first, the receptionist was being argumentative and had to ask one of the other stylists. The stylist then comes up and asks if I am using a Groupon. AS IS THAT IS A TERRIBLE THING IF I DID. I wasn’t using a Groupon but she said when you are making an appointment, you have to make sure you mention the Groupon to see if we have openings SO there is the first scam on Groupon. They don’t like customers to use it.
On top of it, they were speaking about me in Russian right in front of me. I had to take out my laptop to show them the prices because they couldn’t understand where i found these prices. I showed them and they were like we never saw this before. The website hasn’t been updated.
That is not my fault. You are running a business and not updating your website? Come on. The owner was apparently at some conference and they were hesitant in honoring the prices that they have listed on THEIR website. Also, they tried to tell me that I was not a new client. I was a new client, but how would they know? They still use appointment books and not a salon software system.
I never really write Unilocal reviews, but being that I have worked as a receptionist throughout my college career for salons, I know better. Terrible customer service. I still have color on my scalp. Not a happy customer.

I really wish I never came here. Hair was okay. I’m going to go somewhere else to fix it. But service is horrible. I don’t think I like having my hair done while the stylist moan and groan about wanting to go home but have to wait for my hair to be done.

I went here after I bought a groupon for gel manicure and pedicure. Some of the reviews scared me andi read them AFTER I bought the groupon. However, the customer service was not bad. My manicure and pedicure was decent not bad by any means. Def not the best I have ever had though.

Went there for the first time (referred by a friend) with a picture of balayage highlights that I wanted to do. My stylist (Olga) did wonders, she put in the balayage and front highlights. She took the inspiration and really ran with it. My hair turned out beautiful, I’m absolutely loving it and will be coming back!!!

Bought the groupon. Horrible. Damaged my hair waiting a month to go somewhere else to fix it. I don’t know what kind of bleach they use but it was everywhere and crumbly blue. The person who did my hair also did not speak a word of English. The owner Olga is rude and was yelling at an elderly customer. Do not go…
I’m also not one to really complain like this. You have been warned.

I went for a cut and color with a Groupon and was told it would be an extra $ 30 to blow dry my hair. It was February and 12 degrees outside, but I was so horrified that they would try that, I said no. I have never paid extra for a blowdry when getting style/​color. It’s one thing if I was getting a cheap hair cut at a barber, but a salon… NEVER.
When I was sitting there the pregnant stylist next to me was talking about babies and I heard her telling her customer that «Jews have sick and premature babies because they marry their cousins»!! I was shocked and disgusted and upon leaving I asked to speak with the owner. She didn’t apologize, or speak with the stylist — nothing, just nodded.
Terrible place!
I also got an email from Unilocal saying it was second hand information. There is no way to contact Unilocal.This happened to me. Nothing second hand.

I have been coming to something new for 7 years! I can’t imagine going any where else for the past 7 years I have only gone to Sarah for my color, cuts, and blow outs even makeup for special occasions ! I can’t ever see my self going to any one else and won’t she is a true «hair god»… 3 years ago when Olga developed the magic sleek treatment I became instantly hooked helping control my curls and frizz «every curly haired girls dream not to add the magic sleek repair treatment is better then any repair I’ve tried. It’s safe to say I’m an addict … At something new you feel at home if I had the time I would spend all day here!

Don’t go here if you have a groupon or living socials deal. You will be treated as a second class citizen. The salon is dirty especially around the wash basins. The Conditioner and shampoo that they use must be the cheapest products on the market as there is absolutely no fragrance from either product. The owner is not interested in the clients but only with promoting some straightening product that she is continuously pushing on clients. Run, don’t walk from this salon.

Avoid this salon! Last friday I used a Groupon to get my hair cut and colored. I found the environment to be tense as the owner was arguing with different people about the cost. I had a gut feeling that it would be a bad experience, but I decided to stay.
The woman who cut my hair and the woman working at the front were both extremely friendly and kind. I got my hair colored and cute, but when I got home and straightened my hair I noticed that it was very was uneven, it was much shorter on one side. I decided to go back in and have the haircut fixed.
I returned to the salon to explain what happened. I was terrified before going because I had read other bad reviews and I had seen how the salon was run on Friday. The woman who cut my hair was kind and really wanted me to be happy with my style, but the owner was awful. She came up to me after the cut and proceeded to blame me for the haircut saying that it was my fault because I didn’t pay for a blowout and that they aren’t responsible for a bad haircut if the hair is not fully dried before the customer leaves. WTF. I said to her that I I didn’t understand why she was confronting me and then she was patting herself on the back for even letting me come back to get my hair redone without charging me.
The owner is rude and lacks customer service skills. Everyone else that works there is wonderful, but the owner is blunt and not concerned about making the customer happy.
Save yourself time and grief and do not visit this salon.

I found Something New Salon through Groupon while home visiting family. I was overdue for a color update and I purchased the single process color and cut for $ 29. I figured okay, why not?!
When I arrived, I was greeted by my stylist, Kaitlin. She was very friendly and welcoming. I really liked her hair color and it matched the photo I brought in.
The owner, Olga, came over to consult on the best approach to accomplish the color I was looking for. I was immediatly told that they could not achieve the color I was looking for without adding in highlights or bleaching my hair to lighthen it. My new total was going to be $ 160. So much for my Groupon!
The process begins… the bleaching part took sooooo long (1.5 hrs) that by the time my hair was ready to be colored, the salon was technically closed. In a rush to get the job done, Olga helped Kaitlyn put the actual color on my hair for the 2^nd process. The new color was not on my hair for more than 10 minutes before Olga instructed Kaitlin to rinse me out.
Once the color was washed, I was immediatly upset. My roots were blaring brassy blonde from the bleaching process, because the dye never had enough time to set up. Kaitlin saw it and knew I wasn’t happy. Olga asked her what she thought of the color and Kaitlin told her that my roots were brassy. Olga came over and said that it was fine and would look better dry. Well, dry or wet… my brassy roots (with auburn hair) looked horrible!
Kaitlin told me to come back in the next day and she would fix it. Olga didn’t like this at all.
The next day I went in to get it fixed. Olga insisted on mixing up my color and days later, I swear she mixed up a semi-​permenant color just to be spiteful. Kaitlin did her best to fix it and then was doing a great job drying and styling my hair.
However, she kept getting nasty looks from Olga and she kept telling Kaitlin to hurry up because she already spent enough time with me the night before.
Olga was so rude and such a horrible, unprofessional person that I don’t know how she has managed to keep a salon up and running. Not a way to bring in new business and keep clientle.
Kaitlin would be better off leaving that horrible shop for another more professional salon where her mentor, the head stylist and owner actually knows how to do a good coloring job!
Be warned!

I’ve been going to Something New for years. There’s some jewelry and accessories for sale along with mani/​pedis, waxing, and hair.
Olga does a great job with color and cutting. The place is clean, the employees are friendly. There’s usually coffee and bagels or cookies and magazines to read while you wait.
Be prepared to spend some time there — they’re perfectionists. When it comes to my hair, that’s how I like it!
