New Shady Rest Campgrounds

We stayed here the first night it opened this season, so we had our choice of campsites. I love the setting, trees all around, but close enough to town to be convenient. The camp host is a very pleasant person! It doesn’t hurt that they take senior passes, we stayed for $ 11. No hookups, but we are fully self contained so no big deal.

This is a much better campground that what I was expecting. It’s very well maintained and there’s ample room between campsites. The rangers are nice and helpful. Good access to everything in Mammoth.

How much more convenient can a campground be if you want to camp in an outdoorsy area with plenty of trails and lakes around for everyone’s tastes? Located right on the main street leading into the mountain resort town of Mammoth Lakes, this place is pretty nice. There are the usual amenities that you’d expect at most campgrounds, including flush toilets (!). The showers aren’t on-​site, though. Since we lost the information sheet about where to find them nearby, we never used them. During a fall season trip, though, we were cold more than we were hot and sweaty, so it wasn’t a large deal.
If you forgot anything in the mad packing before your trip, never fear… there’s is a well-​stocked grocery store and a good hardware store very close by.
There are also large food lockers into which you can store all food items and items with scents that might attract bears.
Use them.

There are two resident bears that make the rounds at this campground. They take advantage of any lapses in attentiveness to proper food storage. All toiletries with scents (e.g. lotions, lip balm, toothpaste, etc.) all should be locked up when you aren’t using them. Clear any candy, gum wrappers, snacks, soda cans, etc. out of your cars, too. A bear just ~might~ want that piece of hard candy or banana peel enough to push in your side window to get at it.
(This campground is so nice, that even the local bears give it a thumbs up.)
New Shady Rest was even open this past Columbus Day holiday weekend. Many of the other area campgrounds had been closed down for the season after September.
$ 22 per campsite per night, limit of 6 people per site
and 2 cars per site. Extra cars are $ 5 each per night, or you have the option of parking it over in the overflow parking lot for free.

Addendum 10÷11÷15: The pay showers are $ 7 and are located at the RV Park across the main street and down a ways.

It would have been a 5 star except we stayed in site 135 with a 30 foot trailer. The site was at such a slope that we had to raise the front of the trailer up about 4 feet to get it level. The trailer was raised so much in the front that it was really unstable. So needless to say I didn’t sleep much. Other than that the site was huge, beautiful, clean and quiet. We are going to try again someday in a different site.

The rest room is clean!
Double locked bear trash can in front or the restroom.
Portable water is available.
It is nice to camp the first night before going backpacking.
