The Red Tomato Pizzeria

This is straight up the best pizza place on the shoreline. Actually it’s the best pizza in Connecticut hands down. The staff is great and the food quality is amazing. If you have never been before make it a mission to stop in here for REAL true pizza you won’t be disappointed.

I usually get my pizza to go. The service is fast and usually good quality, fresh. But stay away from the sausage. I have tried it twice. It tasted bad both times. Otherwise for none New Haven pizza, it’s pretty good.

Probably the best local pizza without going to New Haven. They had a variety of options, and I highly recommend the pesto pizza with extra fresh tomatoes.

I travel a lot and have tried a lot of pizza… I absolutely love the Red Tomato. I don’t get to the area as much as I used to, but when I do, I make sure to get some pizza from them.

Great Pizza if you eat it there — if not — take out is a horrible as the crust is too thin to stay crisp for more than 10 minutes. For eat in, they could get real or at least better plates.

Friendly staff and owner, delicious pizza. When we need a «fix» of New Haven style pizza, this is a restaurant for us. Most recently had the house pizza which was fabulous. Thin crispy crust, just the right combination of flavors for a wonderful meal.

I grew up on Pepe’s, Sally’s, Zuppardi’s and love Bar and Modern. That being said, The Red Tomato is great. I am of Italian descent and have sampled lots of pies from many places. My wife and I love their shrimp scampi. It is fantastic. The crust is light and the pies have lots of flavor. You will love it!
The people are friendly, the prices are good, the pizza is great. Give it a try!

Hello Red Tomato it’s good to be back. Salmon pie in Germany was interesting but I missed your white clam and bacon. That was until I saw a shrimp pie go by. So, a small half clam and bac, half shrimp and bac-​big Yum! M had cheese, as always, but T got a little wild with salami, pepperoni and bacon. I said there’s no way, then I took a bite. Yes grease and salt and spice and wonderful. Add some Thimble Island and a glass of Malbec and we were happy. Took a salad home next day’s lunch and on our way.
Pie is good, waitress little and cute, the owner stopped by to see how we liked all that pork-​Thanks for the nice welcome back.
However, to the guy who drives to Boston for pizza– Pizzeria Regina in the West End is all you need to know.

we often go here and almost always get their clam and bacon which is quite good. They need a better salad lineup and beer/​wine menu. Can get packed. Tiny spot. Chuck if you are listening get a few better salads. keep the Mom’s happy and you’re place will be stuffed to the gills. Take out salads. Something you could pump out of there. Do it now and we’ll be there every week.

i mean, it is not far from new haven and if i compare it to any of those pizzas, this place isnt even in the running. as a pizzeria, it is ok.
i had a small cheese pie — and if you look at the pic i posted on the Unilocal you can see the crust was docked to hell with a meat hook or something, it was really mutilated and had no bubbles whatsoever. i hate that. the sauce was on the acidic side and i had heard a lot of people talk about the sauce at red tomato and honestly it did nothing for me, it did not elevate this pizza, it was pretty much just an ok sauce. the cheese was ok too. geez i am tired of say OK so i am done with this review.
high point: they have foxon park soda and thimble island beer.

I like this much better than Pepe’s, service is fantastic. I am a huge pizza fan and usually find myself being pretty snobby about it, this is great apizza!

This pizza is just okay. It is fairly clear that whoever gave them 5 stars is either NOT Italian or has NEVER been to BAR, Modern, Sally’s or Pepe’s.
Also, where in the heck is the dining room in the photo below?
Finally, I would rather just drive 2 hours to go to the Bronx or to Pizzeria Regina or Café Pompeii in Boston — now that’s pizza.

Love Red Tomato Pizza! My favorite pie is the house special: a thin crust white pizza with mozzarella, fresh sliced tomato, garlic and basil. Its light, fresh and delicious! The pesto pizza is also good– get it with tomato other wise its really plain and boring. Normally we just get take out here, the dining room is very small and often you can not get a table. The interior is nice– just come early!

As a lover of pizza I kept hearing people comment on how great Red Tomato’s pizza is so I had to try it last night for the first time. Total disappointment.
First off — the dining room… the locals definitely do take out as the dining room was small, very unappealing AND smokey! It was obvious the smoke was from the ovens. Everything was served either in paper cups or on paper plates, something I really hate when spending money INSIDE a restaurant. They did serve the wine in a glass, though I wouldn’t have been surprised if it were served in a red Solo cup.
We ordered the Antipasto — it was only $ 6 and definitely only worth $ 6. The waitress brought us our oil and vinegar in a small takeout container! Hello? I’m eating inside not out in my car! We ate our antipasto off paper plates.
When our pizza arrived I handed the waitress the dirty paper plate and she looked at me and said «oh you want a clean plate for your pizza?» Ummm duh!
The pie we ordered was a sausage and pepperoni. I loved the crust but found the pizza VERY dry. Hardly any tomato sauce, shocking for a place called Red Tomato. I flagged the inept waitress down and asked for extra sauce. She returned with a coffee cup of COLD tomato sauce right from a can! We had to walk it into the back to ask them to please heat it up. Once I spread some of that on my pizza it tasted a little better, but added some Parmesan cheese to kick up the bland flavor of the extra sauce.
Now for the best horrible part — when we were leaving we overheard the staff in the back talking about an order that was just placed on the phone. The staff member said «oh that order just drove me crazy, they asked for extra this, extra that, this and that» and then she said to her coworker «he was such a jerk I charged him an extra $ 5» and then laughed, until she saw us then acted like a deer caught in headlights.
Definitely won’t return, that’s for sure and if you love this place and find that your take out orders are never the same price, it’s because the staff probably felt you acted like a jerk on the phone and this was their way of getting back at you for charging you extra.

This is a ‘thin-​crust pizza’ place… in the New Haven style. I like the crust and I love the fact that the clams are never ever canned, always fresh. (it shows).
The dining room is small, so there can be a wait at the more popular evening times; be prepared… as if no one ever waits in front of Sally’s or Pepi’s…
…Good pizza, a half-​dozen beers to choose from, an excellent white clam option: what else do you want?

Outstanding! The best! No need to go to New Haven.

Good for the Shoreline, I have only had takeout here but if you like it thin, this is the only place in the Guilford/​Madison area that does thin, (that I am aware of). We generally get a plain and a large with 2 topppings, comes out to $ 30 or so… I would not call it a good deal…
Other pizza restaurants are doing thin crust, but this place does get it right.

Best pizza I’ve had in Guilford so far. Yes, I’m aware it’s actually just across the town line in Madison.
For me, crust makes the pizza, and this pizza has a great crust. Thin and crisp, but with a good chew. Absolutely nothing to complain about, except maybe the long wait for a table when they’re busy (so call ahead and get takeout).

First off, Danielle of Worcester, if you believe the Red Tomato is the only pizzeria along the shoreline that makes fresh tomato sauce, then I have a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you. That statement is absolutely stupid and it’s like saying McDonalds is the only restaurant along the shoreline that sells hamburgers. Most pizzerias make their own sauce. It’s quite easy and hardly a noteworthy accomplishment. But It’s understandable how folks who can’t boil water would be impressed. The rest of us naturally assume most pizza joints make their own sauce.
Overall the Red T gets a thumbs down. If this place weren’t competing with so many other good pizza places, it would probably get a thumbs up. But I can think of lots of other shoreline places that make a better pizza. Anthony’s, Naples, Bufalina, Centro and Grand Apizza come to mind.
The Red Tomato boasts its pizza as being «New Haven thin style pizza». But it’s an insult to mention New Haven in the same sentence as the Red Tomato. It’s beyond me why Madison people go ga-​ga over it (although it’s hardly surprising because this is the same town where Village Pizza has stayed in business for 16 years). The pizza reminds me more of all the mediocre pizza joints in NYC when I used to live in Manhattan. You know the pizza joints I’m talking about. The ones that say Famous Ray and serve mostly slices. The Red Tomato serves very similar style pizza and would fit in perfectly among them.
