History

Established in 1969.

In 1969 Jeff Stanley opened an eclectic gift shop in Des Moines, Iowa.

He called it, Dotty Dumpling’s Dowry. After only a few years in operation his interest turned from jewelry and clothing to hamburgers.

In 1974 he moved to Madison and opened the first Dotty Dumpling’s Dowry restaurant on Monroe Street. Two years later, Dotty’s relocated to Regent Street where burger lovers congregated after Badger football games. As our popularity grew so did our need for more space. In 1990, Dotty’s moved to Fairchild Street where Stanley was crowned Madison’s ‘Hamburger King’. In 2001 we were booted from the eclectic Fairchild location to make way for the Overture Center. Stanley didn’t go without standing up for small business owners and many remember Dotty’s being the last standing building on the block. In 2003, we reopened our doors on Frances Street where we remain a family-owned and operated business with Stanley’s daughter, Rachael carrying on our 40 year tradition.
