History

Established in 1981.

The Frank N. and Fannie Allen Latimer House was built by Frank and his second wife, the former Fannie Foster Allen who were married January 7, 1885. The house was constructed in 1890. Frank N. Latimer was admitted to the University of Michigan where he earned degrees in medicine and chemistry in 1876 prior to practicing medicine in Muskegon and Holton before moving to Ludington in 1877 where he opened a drug store. The popular druggist played an important role in the business destiny of many of the area’s successful citizens. Several of his clerks, after apprenticing for many years with the doctor, started their own businesses. Latimer was a significant businessman in the community, a prominent civic leader, and an influential politician. Latimer lost the house to the state of Michigan for back taxes in 1895 and the house has passed through many different owners since that date.
