Chestnut Ridge

My roommate and I lived here for a year with my dog. At first, the apartment complex was decent and the staff was quite nice. But things turned downward after we signed the lease.
The first day we moved in, there were many cop cars in the complex. That wasn’t a good sign. About 3 months in, two of our neighbors were kicked out of their apartment. Apparently they had many low income tenants.
The management never filled our work requests. The day we moved in, we told them everything that was missing in the apartment, including a light cover in the kitchen, screens for our windows, etc. Those were never replaced even though they said that they would take care of it. Then, we had an issue with bugs, so we told management. They said that their pest control team would check it out and take care of it. Never came. It was like this for the entire year.
The laundry facilities are subpar. Most of the machines are non-​functional, even though it looks like a big laundry room. On many occasions there were floods in the laundry facility.
The worst of it was after moving out. We got a quote when we moved out for our final water bill to be about $ 50. However, we received a bill that was over $ 500 for water (over $ 200 for a water bill) and to seal the floors. We left the apartment cleaner than it was given to us, and they charged us to have their floors resealed all because we had a pet in the unit. Our dog never had any accidents in the apartment, so there was no reason for resealing the floors. We’ve tried to dispute this with the debt collection agency, and the agency never responded to us. Now they’re saying that they could have Chestnut Ridge sue us for this. This is absolutely unprofessional.
When my roommate and I were reading reviews for Chestnut Ridge, we came across a review about the same issue: others were billed after they moved out because they also had a dog. While the apartment complex says that they are pet friendly, their actions reveal that they are not.
I had other things that I didn’t quite like about the complex, like how there was one central mailbox unit and only one dumpster, but those aren’t big issues. I could deal with all of those.
If you are contemplating on Chestnut Ridge, I would dissuade you from signing a lease with them. We always paid our bills on time, picked up after our dog, and were good members of the community, and they treated us with disrespect. They are unprofessional, rude, irresponsible, and definitely not pet friendly.
