History

Established in 1995.

Owner Sam Marmorstein decided to leave the LA traffic and move to the peaceful Santa Ynez Valley and plant his dream vineyard in his own backyard (the beginning of his own winery, Bernat). But you can’t make much money from a three acre vineyard that takes three years to produce grapes. So Sam checked the paper every morning for an investment opportunity. One day he saw a little ad for a little deli in Los Olivos that he saw potential to be much more. To the locals dismay the «guy from LA» bought the business that day. Now, Sam is an official local and has turned the little Deli into an internationally recognized and acclaimed restaurant and wine store. With a vision, a lot of Hard Work, and great management skills, Sam has created something special. He loves that people make memories, laugh, drink fine wine, eat great food, and relax together at his Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café. After all, Sam asks, «Aren’t these the moments we remember?»

From the day I opened the doors of The Los Olivos Café in 1995, my greatest aim was and still is, to make every customer feel like they are guests in my own home. Bringing the freshest wine-​friendly cuisine continues to drive the focus of our seasonal menu. Being a winemaker myself, I love to experience great wine with great food. But that doesn’t mean it has to be complicated. When food and wine is made with love, you can taste the quality and the effort that went into making the final product. Encouraging this creativity and passion in our kitchen staff and the front of the house has proved that we really can bring «the Best of the Central Coast.»

My goal when opening The Wine Merchant adjacent to The Café was to offer the best wines of the California Central Coast region at affordable prices that all wine lovers can enjoy. From the novice to the experienced wine buyer our wine store is a welcoming place to enjoy, learn, and shop for the superb wines of our area. Cheers!
