Specialties
The King’s Roost is now open! We are your resource for getting started and maintaining small do-it-yourself projects. Inspired by urban farming and homesteading, more like «urban-steading,» we picked some of the most city-friendly of these activities that take up the least amount of space and time, while providing a hugely rewarding do-it-yourself experience. Come explore and learn how to mill organic grains with our selection of grain mills (no more complicated than grinding coffee), raise fish and vegetables in an aquaponics system (come see a system in action), brew small batches of craft beer, make cheese or tofu with our cheese making kits, ferment your own sauerkraut or kimchee or even yogurt, grow sprouts or mushrooms on the kitchen counter, make your own organic soap or even get started with backyard chickens.
We have a small specialized bookstore, regular workshops, as well as plenty of encouragement and advice to help you get started.
PARKING: Enter the parking lot from Sunset, right next to the pet store Echo Bark and enter the store from the parking lot.
History
Established in 2014.
After learning how to bake bread, a friend suggested I order a grain mill to mill my own flour. Next thing I knew, not only was my bread so much better, I was making everything with my new mill, from pancakes to waffles to oatmeal and crepes using all sorts of different whole grains. It was so rewarding, I began looking for other ways to make or produce stuff that was healthier, tastier and less processed, without being too expensive or time consuming. As I learned more about things like aquaponics, milling, baking, sprouting and fermenting, I realized there was no store around here that supported my activities. So I opened the King’s Roost here on the border of Silverlake and Los Feliz to provide the resources for people interested in starting a project or two of their own.
