Specialties
We are a complete Argentine Tango academy based in Culver City. With 8 classes per week, 3 practice events, unique bootcamps and immersions, we specialize in integrating complete beginners into LA’s inspiring social Tango scene.
History
Established in 2009.
Oxygen Tango opened its doors in 2010, after two years of running a monthly Tango event that planted thousands of trees through Tango events by donating $ 1 per dancer to the Nature Conservancy. In establishing the school, Mitra Martin and Stefan Fabry built on their community work with Tango Mar Vista and were joined by a all-star line up of Tango teachers Fabienne Bongard (in 2010), Brian Nguyen and Yuliana Basmajyan (2010) and Sharna Fabiano (2011). Oxygen’s network of Tango talent makes it an inspiring, vibrant place to learn and practice. After 6 years of development (2005 – 2011) Oxygen welcomed its first cohort to the Tango Challenge, now its signature program that sets the standard for what beginners should be able to achieve after their first 3 months of intensive Tango. The Tango Challenge at Oxygen is now in its 8th cohort, known across the country as a transformative program for beginners.
Meet the Business Owner
Mitra M.
Business Owner
Mitra Martin has taught and inspired hundreds of Tango students, in LA and beyond, in the course of her 14 years’ devotion to Tango. Dance and teaching run deep in her blood: her grandparents danced Tango in France in the 40s, and founded one of the first private schools for women in Iran. A highly versatile dancer, lead & follow, Mitra presents powerful, cutting edge Tango performances. Her Montessori background, interdisciplinary degree at Princeton, and group facilitation work make her an extraordinarily effective teacher.
For two decades Stefan Fabry has dedicated his life to self-discovery. Dance has always played a central role in this exploration; Stefan sees a healthy, capable, and responsive body as an essential medium for living fully, feeling deeply, and finding peace. Stefan’s dance training at Tanz Projecte Koln, his 17 years of Contact Improvisation, and his decade-long apprenticeship with legendary modern dance choreographer Rudy Perez inspires his Tango and teaching.
