Mashti Malone’s Ice Cream

Second time here since a year ago. Nothing much has changed. Still the quaint store tucked in the corner of a busy plaza in La Brea. My experience was as smooth and light as their rosewater sorbet and as creamy as their saffron ice cream. I love the cherry-​flavored drizzle on my ice cream so try it! The lemon drizzle was too sour for my taste. Like last time, I forgot to take pics lol it means, I must return.sooner.
Limited parking space in the plaza where store is located but lots of parking at the business center in the back. Although I went there at 9pm-​ish. Must be a zoo in the morning. Worth a visit still.

I came here on a Sunday before my basketball game in Hollywood (I know you’re thinking why in the world did he get ice cream before he played basketball). I’m thinking the same thing but I really was craving ice cream so dammit I got ice cream! I’ve heard about this place is since it was around the corner from the gym I was going to be playing at I figured it would be a great time to try it so I parked at the gym and walked over — since it was only about a two block walk. It’s nestled inside of a plaza and if you’re not looking for it you can easily pass it up (trust me you can because in my car I passed by it twice and couldn’t find it but when I walked over it was a little easier to see).
It has the feel of a traditional ice cream parlor and when I walked in there was about one person ahead of me and the smell of ice cream begin to enlighten my stomach with nostalgia. Were tons of different ice cream flavors and also gelato-​ish flavors is well. I asked if I could sample some flavors and then ploy you told me of course. She asked me which flavors I wanted to sample so I looked over a few and I decided to try dulce de leche, Rainbow sherbet, almond praline, and cookies and cream. They were all amazing, but I’ve really been craving vanilla ice cream lately so I settled 2 scoops= 1 dulce de leche and 1 almond praline. Yes they let you choose different flavors for your scoop of ice cream if you want. I eat this ice cream feeling my body in pure bliss as I ate some of the finest ice cream Hollywood has to offer. I ate it all knowing that I would definitely come back here as often as Time and distance permits me. If you’re looking for great ice cream and you’re in Hollywood and I would highly recommend you try Mashti Malone’d ice cream!

OhMyGosh this place is fun! And we got to meet and I believe know Mashti… he is a riot! In a very good way. First of the Ice Cream is Primo… better than any other slush out there. He is of Turkish decent and he was fun to be around.
We visited twice while we were on vacation in Southern California. He has many flavors to choose from and he offers free samples as soon as you walk in– guaranteeing everyone will for sure buy a scoop or two. It’s genius!
My wife is from Southeast Asia and I from the Caribbean, we were so ready for the exotic flavors he had. The Rose, Pistachio were divine! The kids loved it, of course. But you could tell you were eating quality.
He grew fond of us, especially our kids while we were in his store and he started conversation with us. He told us stories of his Ice Cream being requested at all the major Academy Award shows in Hollywood, not in a bragging way, but just about where and how far his Ice Cream has taken him. And all the stars that have come to try his delicious dessert.
Not a loud man, but comfortable and happy and he made us feel happy to be there. No foo-​foo interior, no fancy storefront… just awesome Persian Ice Cream. I cannot wait to go back and visit my Mashti.

Good testing ice cream! It’s abut too pricey unfortunately. Little 2 scoops for almost $ 7.
One in a while, I may come back since they have a parking.

Perhaps I am not as adventurous with ice cream as I thought I was. Mashti Malones serves unique and interesting Persian ice cream favorites in a cute shop in West Hollywood. I love Middle Eastern flavors and desserts so I wanted to love this place, but was slightly disappointed that the only vegan flavors they have are fruit sorbets.
The Herbal Snow was interesting, with nice rose, lemon, and basil flavors. It was enjoyable, but not amazing. The sour cherry was terrible-​not sour at all. It tasted like air freshener, and the texture was gelatinous, like gummy ice cream. I couldn’t finish it, and I finish EVERYTHING. $ 6 for two scoops. The girls working were very sweet and helpful. Some of the non-​vegan flavors looked amazing, so while I personally will not return, I still recommend coming here for a unique dessert experience.

The flavors here are fantastic! The staff are also incredibly helpful and will let you sample everything and even offer recommendations for flavors to combine. My favorite has always been the orange blossom but depending on my mood, I might go for something different.
If you’re cruising through LA and have time for some really good dessert, stop by! Oh. and don’t forget to carpool cause parking is limited unless you park down the street and walk.

I like this place, because I love their ice cream and dessert it’s amazing! Everything is ridiculously delicious, you want to come back every day!
The service is always great and the product never fails to please. Their prices make them more appealing. It’s a cool spot to chill or hang out with friends.

Delicious, aromatic Persian creaminess, if slightly overrated.
I’m all but ready to say that I’ve been here enough times to know that I like it, but that I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here, but the fact that this is one of the most famous ice creameries in Los Angeles, and that it’s conveniently located right here in Hollywood means I’ll probably return on occasion, if not just to take friends visiting from out of town.
Walk in and find 2 displays of ice cream: the one of the left has all Western flavors; the one facing the entrance is all traditional Persian and other exotic flavors, as well as a selection of sorbets. (You can do pretty good here even without dairy.) Without spending too much time looking at the Western flavors, head to the Persian flavors, most of which are based on nuts and flowers… or cucumbers. (Seriously, when did you last see cucumber ice cream?) Their most famous flavor is Saffron Rosewater, and it does not dissapoint.
+Plus: They are eager to let you sample multiple flavors.
–Minus: They don’t let you do half & half flavors, and the smallest cup (single scoop) is a steep $ 4.
On taste and consistency: I like the deep aromas of the flavors, but consistency is not as stringy as what I’ve had at other Persian ice cream shops, and not as delicate as I’d expect from $ 4 ice cream.
In case you’re wondering about the name – I thought «Malone» sounded more Irish than Persian – apparently this location was previously owned by an Irishman named Malone, and they respectfully kept that portion of the name. You’ll even notice the clover they kept in the sign.
Not my favorite ice cream, or even favorite Persian ice cream in LA, but certainly worth trying.

Parking: there is a lot in the front so we were able to get a space right in front of the store
Ice Cream: I ordered the creamy rose and ginger cream. Both were unique and delicious. I have never tasted anything like it. Adam had the bourbon vanilla and was an instant fan. Next time we will try the Turkish coffee for sure.
Service: they were friendly and attentive and let us try as many flavors as we liked.

Came in here yesterday to get some ice cream. When I walked up to look at the ice cream, a man was leaning on the glass and didn’t even bother to move. After I made it obvious that I was trying to see the ice cream behind him, he looked at me and walked away from it. Turns out, that guy is either the manager of the place or the owner because he was sitting at a table with older men, talking, and checking in with the employees.
Unfortunately, I will not be coming back to this place because I felt it was very rude for him not to care that I was trying to look at the ice cream options. He knew I was a customer because I had just walked in and went straight to the ice cream. Yet he did not seem to care. Absolutely rubbed me the wrong way and it was very rude.
Also, the floors are very dirty. The sign is beautiful. The floors, not so much. If you like cookies and cream ice cream, this place is easily amongst the best. However, The other flavors like lavender or rose water taste a little too flowery or reminiscent of soap.
If you’re a fan of cookies and cream ice cream and awesome signs, then this is the place for you!
Also, there was a dude in there just chillin’ barefoot. Now THATS Nasty Malone! HA! Just kidding. But there’s a splash of truth in that statement. Later dudes and dudettes.

I often admit that I am not a huge ice cream fan. It usually only appeals to me out of desperation or if the flavours intrigue me enough. In this case it was the flavours that made me plan a trip out to this part of town.
With flavours like Rose water, lavender, saffron, cucumber, Turkish coffee and others this ice cream place is certainly like no other. Except of course the other ice cream/​gelato place across from town but that’s a review for another day.
The flavours are bold and impressive. The ice cream had a silky texture while not being overly creamy or too sweet. It was quite refreshing and every little bit is intriguing as you have probably never tasted flavours like this. It is so aromatic it’s like if you had sprayed perfume on your ice cream. You are left with a lingering aroma of the ice cream even well after you have finished it.
Definitely one of the most memorable ice cream places I have been to. Amazing variety of flavours and great tasting scoops.

I’ve been here twice and I’ve been impressed each time. Their ice creams are soo rich and bold in flavor. I love it! I’m not really into the crazy flavors. They’re good, but I can’t eat a whole scoop of it. I opt for the Turkish coffee, rocky road, or cookies n cream. They’re also super nice about testing flavors.
If you like coffee ice cream I highly recommend the Turkish coffee. I buy a pint home every single time. Way better than haggen Daz I tell you!

Best rose water ice cream in LA. In my opinion, I think Mashti Malone is better than Saffron & Rose Ice Cream in Westwood. I say this because there’s a slightly wider selection of flavors here, and Mashti offers a variety of «rose water» flavors. For example, there was the regular rose water, sweet cream rose water, and another with some noodle-​like thingies, which I thought was super cool to try out. I got a kiddie scoop of the sweet cream rose water, which had a creamy milky base with big chunks of cream, and my friend got a sorbet with poppy seeds mixed inside – so cool and so yummy!
There are a few tables both inside and outside so I think this place would accommodate small groups.
There’s a tiny parking lot up front and street parking is also available so I don’t think parking will be a big problem.

first off, the service here on Friday night– you two gals were phenomenal! The kindest servers ever and was just so impressed with this shop.
Flavors– butter pecan and peanut butter! Man, i got to love them both. the butter pecan was something you don’t taste anywhere. It was rich and buttery, but creamy at the same time. Not too sweet but you can taste the roasted pecans.
The peanut butter was a nice balance and i am such a huge fan of peanut butter so I am all for it.
I can’t wait to be back here for the service and delicious gourmet ice cream. If you are in the neighborhood, or if you are driving from far, you have to check out this ice cream store. I am quite please!

BACKSTORY: (Repeated on all ice cream crawl reviews. If you’ve read it once, no need to read it 20+ times :-p)
Thanks to social media and their ways to entice peeps, like me, to get out and about town, I recently succumbed to their power of suggestion and checked out ice cream parlors in the LA area. The goal? The goal was not to find the best ice cream parlor, nor the worst, and to see what was out there, instead the goal was to have a frame of reference when peeps or fellow Unilocalers ask, suggest, or check into places.
Here we go, here we go again, with «armed with an appetite and not afraid to use it»!!!
PARKING:
A few spots in a modest strip mall
INTERIOR:
No real wow factor, except for the old-​style ice cream makers.
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
A couple of girls were holding down the fort and gave cohort and I their attention, as there was no one else in the parlor.
ORDERED:
Creamy rosewater for me and rice starch noodles for cohort.
IN A SCOOP:
A bit late in the day on a Sunday, we were able to find parking right out front of this creamery in the strip mall. I was quite surprised that the rosewater mixed in with the ice cream wasn’t overwhelming. IMHO, rosewater is an acquired taste and from my experience, an overpowering amount is typically added, however, not there. The flavor was just right, just enough to taste, not too much prick you with its thorns.
Overall, it was worth a try if I’m in the area, granted the traffreak isn’t too bad, as in the Hollywood area and the street in and around are typically congested.
#LAICECREAMCRAWL

This place has some very interesting and unique flavors of ice cream, many with a Persian influence. They have about 30 different flavors, half normal, half that are more unusual. They have a few with the rose water as a base, which you either love or hate. I’m personally not a fan of eating flowers, so I opted for the more traditional sweet ice creams. I had a almond brittle or something like that and it was delicious; my husband opted for an ice-​based variety (in the picture). They also sell some Persian treats.
They do have a parking lot, but it’s shared amongst several businesses. I’ve only been once and there was one or two spots open during the daytime – not sure what it’d be like at night. The other downside is that it’s kind of expensive for just a scoop of ice cream. $ 4 for a single scoop is asking a lot in my opinion. I’d rather go to ColdStone or Cool Haus.

Continuing on my quest to find my favorite ice cream shop, I stumbled across Mashti Malone’s ice cream on Unilocal and it looked so good that I had to try it. It’s sort of hidden away in a shopping center in Hollywood. So it has a free private lot where you can park.
There’s nothing special about the inside, in fact, if I hadn’t looked the place up on Unilocal beforehand, I probably wouldn’t have gone in. They had a range of flavors, with the classic favorites — chocolate, cookies & cream etc… but they also had unique flavors, including the Rosewater Saffron with pistachios and Creamy Rosewater, which is what we tried.
I had a scoop of Rosewater Saffron. And my friend had the Creamy Rosewater Mashti, which is essentially a wafer ice cream sandwich.
I was impressed with the Saffron flavor. It was pleasant and unique. Had a small spicy tone to it as well. The pistachios were frozen, so they didn’t have a crunch, but they still complimented the ice cream well.
The Creamy Rosewater, however, was not really for me. It was kind of bland. I’m not sure how the Mashti is supposed to taste, as I’ve never had it before, but it felt stale to me. Maybe it’s supposed to be like that? Either way, that one was a little disappointing.
Overall, Mashti Malone’s was okay, maybe if I’m in the area, I’d come back for another scoop of their Saffron.

KIND OF satisfies your ice cream craving during this heat wave, but seriously for Persian-​style ice cream, GO TO SAFFRON AND ROSE IN WESTWOOD. It’s 10x’s better and flavors are much better over there.
I even did a side by side comparison of their Saffron & Pistachio between the two. No comparison. Saffron all the way.
Skip Nasty Malone’s (just kidding, it’s not horrible. their creamy rosewater was actually pretty good!), and head to Westwood. It’s my favorite ice cream joint in LA. Peace!

My first time expereince was blah and had prevented me from coming back but the second time, def changed me!
The girls working on Wed night were sweet as can be and offered a lot of different assortments that made each ice cream that much yummier ! They not only offer unlimited supply of tasting but they weren’t giving you that uncomfortable «uh, are you going to buy it now» type of look that most other ice cream places tend to give you.
We tried so many flavors it was sooo hard to just pick 2, so we ended up buying a pint back home. They put it in dry ice — (another thoughtful gesture) Overall, I def will be coming back!

Mashti Malone’s Ice Cream is located in a plaza that looks sort of ghetto — it is the far left shop. They have regular ice cream flavors you can find at a typical store in one holder and then they’re authentic Persian flavors in the other holder.
I decided to get a scoop of the saffron pistachio rosewater and cream rosewater with chunks. Both had a distinct flavor to them. At first the idea of cream chunks was sort of unappealing, however, chewing into them was refreshing and I found myself searching for more chunks!
The only downfall is that my ice cream melted rather fast so I ended up drinking ¹⁄₃ of it. Also, customer service wasn’t that hot — the girl who helped me didn’t make eye contact once and it felt like I had to drag out a conversation/​answer from her when I asked what flavors were the most popular and what she recommends. It felt like she didn’t appreciate my business, but I’m glad I got to check this place out.

Super glacier un peu caché à la fin de Hollywood boulevard. Il né ressemble pas à grand chose de l’extérieur mais propose des goûts vraiment unique. Le plus impressionnant: safran ! Lavande est superbe également. De plus le servie est super sympa et n’hésitera pas à vous faire goûter toutes les glaces que vous souhaitez.

Halleluja, das nenne ich persisches Eis! Rosenwasser! Orangenblüten-​Pistazien! Safran! Alles frisch und hocharomatisch!
Wer diesen Laden betritt, kommt nicht ohne glückselige Seufzer raus, wenn er denn auf persisches Eis steht. Aber keine Sorge, es gibt auch Grünteeeis. Cremiges Karamelleis. Und hach! Lavendeleis!
Ja, der Laden ist nicht leicht zu finden, aber wenn man vom Hollywoodboulevard runter zum Sunsetboulevard läuft ist er in dem kleinen Shoppingcenter auf der linken Strassenseite ganz links aussen. Er ist unscheinbar von aussen und nicht wirklich gemütlich, aber ich gebe ihm den Stempel authentisch. Auch weil er neben Eis auch verführerischste Kekse bereit hält, die ebenso handgemacht und nussreich daherkommen wie das Eis. Und das hat es in sich!
Scheinbar kann man es auch auf diversen Foodmärkten erhalten in der Region erhalten. Teuer ist Eis in den USA, das musste ich lernen und hier schlägt eine Kugel mit 4 Dollar zu Buche. Die Investition lohnt sich meiner Meinung aber, gerade wenn man noch nie Lavendeleis gegessen hat. Oder wenn man gerade süchtig nach Safraneis wurde :-)
Probieren darf man übrigens alles und sich Zeit lassen bei der Entscheidung. Und vielleicht erst noch einen türkischen Mokka trinken, der ist nämlich auch fein hier.
