Big Man Bakes

Some of the best cupcakes I’ve ever had. Perfectly moist with just the right amount of density and sweet frosting, but well balanced. Lots of good flavor options, prices are bit high but still worth it. Friendly sales people will patiently help you out. You can park in the structure right next door and get a 15 minute validation from Big Man Bakes if you are just stopping by to get some cupcakes. Red Velvet and Peanut Butter Cupcakes were personal favorites.

Located in DTLA, this cupcake shop is a bit hidden because of all the buildings. A small gem waiting to be found.
Parking: Finding a spot to park your car is probably going to be the biggest challenge if you don’t want to park in a lot or the garage exit door. There is limited meter parking, and as many locals know. DTLA is filled with many one way streets make it longer to go around the areas.
Service: The employees were very sweet. They introduce the cupcakes to us and let us know about their rotating menu as well as the items that they consistently keep in stock. My friend and I stayed late, past the time they closed, where the employees asked if we wanted coffee on the house because they were about to throw it out. A great way to save food & drink! We declined because it was a bit late for coffee for is, but it was nice of them to at least ask.
Product/​Food: They offer two sizes of cupcakes; minis & standard cupcakes. These cupcakes are larger then what you would get a sprinkles. But what’s so great is they are not too sweet. The cupcakes were good, but not anything I wild crave for. If I was in the area, I may come back. Or probably go somewhere else.

I dropped by here after a lunch mtg and a long a$$ Conf Call in DTLA. I had some time to kill before dinner, and Big Man Bakes was across the street. It is located on Main near 4^th.
I ordered a coconut cupcake ($ 3.50 | white cake w/​hint of vanilla & almond, and buttercream frosting & coconut) and a small coffee ($ 3.75). BTW, you receive a mini w/​the purchase of a regular cupcake.
First of all, the cupcake was very good. It was moist inside, had great flavor, and had plenty of coconut. However, a major downside was the price vs the size. Likewise, the coffee was pricey for a small or a large: 3 Stars for both.
The ambiance is OK. You walk in and the cupcakes are in a glass case. There are also a few chairs inside and out: 3 Stars. On the other hand, the service from the brunette working on Tue, ⁵⁄₂ @ 4 pm was excellent (and she was hawt!). There was no coffee, so she made a fresh batch. In addition, she gave me a large coffee for the same price as a small: 5 Stars.
Big Man Bakes, Small Cupcakes! Honestly, without the excellent service and hawt server (yeah, thats how I roll), this place would have been 3 Stars. Everything is overpriced, and the coffee is not that special. Nonetheless, I would come back on a Tue solely to see the brunette again (hehehehehe).

You swept my tastebuds away with your s t r a w b e r r y cupcake — the one dreamy, playful, innocent little thing. I’ve had a very faithful relationship with another crowd-​pleasing cupcake parlour and have pledged myself that no other place can make a strawberry cake as good as they can, however, I think I might have to end my six year commitment with them now that I have found you, Big Man Bakes.
We got an array of five cupcakes — Strawberry, Reese’s, Butterfinger, Red Velvet, and Carrot Cake.
Besides the strawberry did I try the carrot cake and the Reese’s, but I only have room for the strawberry in my heart. I’m usually fond of a good frosting, but it was the cake that did it for me; dense with a little fluff, tart yet decadent with a fragrant floral linger at the end, The soft whipped cream on top was just enough and did not mask any flaws of the strawberry cake — a true winner here.
Skip the rest and go for the strawberry. It won my heart over instantly and I’m almost certain it can win yours too x

I’m not a huge sweets fan, but I promised coworkers some cupcakes, so I decided to stop by here on my way home. The Vanilla almond-​extract cupcake is definitely the best here. It’s not too sweet but has great flavor. If you like almond, almond milk tea, etc, you’ll definitely fall in love with this cupcake. I also tried the Caramel Apple, Red Velvet, and Lemon. The Caramel Apple tasted exactly like apple pie. It was a little too sweet for my taste but if you enjoy apple pie, this one is for you.
Price: I feel like for cupcakes, it’s a little overpriced. Maybe for specialty cupcakes, it might be a good price. But my total came out to be over $ 25 for 12 minis and 4 regular sized cupcakes. This place calls regular sized cupcakes them XL, but they’re not XL at all. You decide if this is expensive to you:

All in all, I gave this place a 4 star because their cupcakes are actually really tasteful. However, I probably won’t be coming here all the time and would only come by once in a blue moon. Or when I promise ppl cupcakes!

I was super excited to try this place, but alas it is not for me. I got the Caramel apple and Carrot Cake cupcakes. Both were sickeningly sweet, No real flavor just SWEET. I will say the girls behind the counter were super nice and the price isn’t bad if super sweet is your thing. Personally, I’ll have to pass.

Stressing about finding that perfect gift for your boss that’s not too over-​the-​top or just craving some damn good sweets?! This is place to go. It’s cupcakes galore! +Parking is free with validation!
Not gonna lie I’m more of a cake kinda person but these cupcakes are an exception. THEY’RE DELICIOUS! Very moist and the frosting is really thick and creamy. Carrot is my staple everytime I visit and I literally have to stop myself from eating more than one of these…
I bought 4 different flavors (carrot, strawberry, nutella, and red velvet) for my bosses and they were so impressed with all of them they were fighting over who could take home the last one! Definitely a nice, simple gift for any occasion and the best part is they only cost $ 3.50 each!

I’m not usually much of a dessert person so I haven’t tried many other cupcake places to compare Big Man Bakes to, but the cupcakes here taste great and are some of the best I’ve had in general. The staff is friendly and helpful too.
The cupcakes are $ 1 for the mini, and $ 3.50 for regular size. The cakes are all super moist and sweet, and the flavors are interesting. The black and white cake (dark chocolate cake with buttercream frosting), Oreo cake, and Reese’s cakes are some of my favorites, but all the cupcakes I’ve had here have been excellent.

This is seriously better than sprinkles! Very fresh, so please keep it up :).
I bought also the peach coffee cake and OMG yummy!
Next time you pass by make sure you grab it.

Them Strawberry Cupcakes though!!! Fire. The Oreo is good too. So freaking good. Moist, close to molten lava texture.
The staff is nice and will give you a free candle for celebrations.

Price is pretty expensive. At half a dozen it is $ 22. for $ 22 i could but myself a very nice meal that’s all im saying.

I’ve had way better and fresher homemade cupcakes for around the same price point and these ones tasted nothing different to Ralphs packaged cupcakes.
I got the chocolate with chips, white and black, caramel apple and the newest coconut chocolate cupcake. My favorite and the only one I would order again is their chocolate chips one. The frosting was great and moist on that one, vs the vanilla which was kind of sugary and bland
I don’t know what all the fuss and hype was about with these thousands of reviews, maybe its cause theyre in a good location. I came here based on the amazing reviews and the experience and taste fell VERY short.
Flavors were boring, weren’t really anything but sugar n butter; like the choc tasted almost the same as the vanilla and at one point the frosting just overtook everything which was a let down. I won’t be back, but I had to try the hype

It didn’t take me long to find a good cupcake spot in LA. I was walking around downtown and was looking for coffee, and I found coffee and some more at Big Man Bakes.
The assistant manager, Frances, was very kind and helpful, providing eloquent details of each and every item I asked about. Though I’m a big chocolate fiend, I went ahead with her recommendation, the caramel apple cupcake. My impression: sold! Everything about the cupcake was great — perfectly moist, and all I wanted was more and more.
The Big Man himself (Chip Brown) was around and I had a nice chat with him. Really great guy, very down to earth.

Even if there are a ton of restaurants in the area that i’ve been wanting to try, my gf and I kept our tradition of going to Kazu Nori, then to Big Man Bakes right after. They’re both delicious and right next to each other! But after my last experience there, I’m no longer a fan.
I usually get a cupcake and a cup of coffee after my lunch next door, but this time they were all out of coffee by 11:30 am. My gf and I sat at the tables outside just for a minute while we looked up coffee places within walking distance.
One of the employees came out and said that the tables were just for customers. We were trying to explain that we are going to buy cupcakes, but we’re just looking for a cup of coffee because they’re sold out. She seriously cut us off, stared us down, and asked us to leave. There wasn’t anyone in line or waiting to use the tables.
I’m sad to no longer have my Oreo cookie cupcake + stump town coffee combo, but customer service (and just being a nice human) is important.

Decided to try this place randomly cause I was craving dessert and it was literally right next to kazunori

I’ve walked by this little bakery a few times I’ve been in DTLA for work, but was never motivated enough to go in. One Saturday morning, as my friend and I were waiting for Kazunori to open up, there this gem stood. Right in front of our eyes. Who says you can’t have dessert for breakfast?! Nonsense.
We were greeted by a friendly staff member who took the time to explain different flavors to us. The mini cupcakes caught our eyes, because my friend and I are fatasses and just couldn’t commit to splitting one cupcake. We decided to get a few mini ones. She sneakily mentioned that it’s $ 5 for half a dozen, an offer we just couldn’t refuse. Yes! Take our money! Take it all!
My personal favorites were the carrot cake and the chocolate on chocolate. The rest were just as good, but just aren’t flavors I enjoy in general – nothing specific to the bakery itself. I will say the cake batter for the red velvet was a little more on the dry side, but the richness of the cream cheese frosting helped.
Overall, I’m a huge fan who regrets not stopping by on the many occasions that I could’ve. It’s been one of the better bakeries I’ve been to.

This tiny bakery located in the heart of DTLA sets the bar high for moist cupcakes. During my recent trip here, I got lucky and found street parking right in front of the shop. The lady working at the time was so friendly, welcoming, and helpful that she made my overall experience here that much better.
The mini cupcakes are perfectly bite sized but sadly only available in 5 flavors: red velvet, carrot, black & white, chocolate, and lemon. My favorite of the 5 flavors is the red velvet. If you’re getting a box of mini cupcakes, I would opt for an assortment of flavors so that you can try them all.

The XL cupcakes are available in a variety of intriguing flavors. The next cupcake that I will be trying from here is the «Caramel Apple», which is stuffed with «Granny Smith Apple chunks in a moist spice cake topped with Real Caramel frosting». The XL cupcakes are decorated beautifully, full of flavor and very filling.

How convenient it was that Big Man Bakes was right next door to KazuNori. Actually my inner voice was saying, thank goodness it’s right here because I really don’t want to be walking around dtla without a body guard!

Ninong Jo was already recommending it since it was next to KazuNori and he knows I won’t always go out of my way for just anything or anyone. A n y w a y… We had just finished having lunch at KazuNori and we were definitely ready for dessert.
The girl behind the glass showcases was so sweet and pleasant and told us about their daily special and etc. I decided on getting the 6 minis for $ 5. Unfortunately, my only choices was whatever they had out there. But at the end, everything was friggin G o o D!
We decided on–
Banana walnut with white icing — moist and perfectly flavored. The icing was just right. Not too sweet and not too bland at all. Loved it the best!

I have the biggest sweet tooth, and I wasn’t about to turn down a visit to Big Man Bakes after dinner at Baco Mercat. I haven’t heard of Big Man Bakes before, but my friend mentioned that the cupcakes were quite tasty and well-​known. And for pretty good reason! Big Man Bakes specializes in a variety of different cupcakes — in either the mini or XL (regular) cupcakes. I found the theme of using sizes (from the name of the store to the cupcake sizes) to be pretty unique — it reminds me of the saying «go big or go home»; you might as well take advantage of the opportunity of being in the store once you’re already there.
Cupcake prices are pretty standard, especially for a storefront in LA. The mini sizes are $ 1 for one, 6 for $ 5, 12 for $ 10, etc. The XL sizes are 1 for $ 3.50, 4 for $ 14, 6 for $ 21, and 12 for $ 39. There were quite a few flavors to choose from on a Friday night at around 9:30. The workers who helped us were super patient as they explained their most popular flavors, recommendations, and ingredients in specific cupcakes.
There were so many flavors to choose from, but sadly we didn’t have enough stomach room to eat all the ones we wanted.
Caramel Apple: This flavor sounds as amazing as it tasted! The cake is a super moist and fluffy spice cake with apple chunks in the middle, topped with a caramel frosting. The cupcake was pretty light and not too heavy, with just enough sweetness in the frosting to not be too overpowering. I liked the spiciness of the cake as well as the apples in the middle — they weren’t too hard nor too soft, and added an interesting take on a regular cupcake.
Carrot Cake: I love carrot cake, but I’m not a fan of all the nuts found inside. When one of the girls described Big Man Bakes’ carrot cake as a carrot cake without nuts, I was super intrigued. And I think this was my favorite cupcake out of all the ones I tried. It was super light and moist. If you can imagine the taste of carrot cake, just think of the lightest, fluffiest, tastiest one and you pretty much get Big Man Bakes. Their cream cheese frosting is a bit heavier, but contained the right amount of thickness to balance the carrot cake. Definitely one I recommend!
Vanilla: I had the chance to pick a cupcake and sadly, I think I chose the wrong one. This cake intrigued me because the description mentioned that it’s a vanilla cake with almond accents and a vanilla buttercream frosting. I really like almond cake, so I was hoping that the almond in this cake would really accentuate the overall flavor of the cake. I thought wrong. This cake was the driest out of the three. The cake was good, but nothing special. I think I’ve had better vanilla cupcakes from local grocery stores. I did like the vanilla buttercream frosting, but it didn’t help the dryness of the cake in any way. I would probably skip this flavor and go for something much more interesting.
Overall, I’m glad we ended up trying the XL cupcakes rather than the mini ones. I think the mini ones are a bit too small and at $ 1 for one, a little too pricey. You get a better taste of the cake and frosting when you opt for the XL cupcake. They have other really interesting flavors, but I definitely want to return to try the lemon, black and white, and old school cupcakes.
Storefront is quite easy to find, especially when it’s at night as the store is lit up with bright lights. There are a few tables inside of the store as well as a few more outside. Storefront isn’t anything too special as what makes them shine is definitely their cupcakes. As for parking, you’ll probably have to find street parking or park at a nearby lot for a flat rate.
tl;dr — A really good cupcake place in LA! The workers are super nice and friendly, and really seemed to want us to have a great experience trying their cupcakes. I’d recommend trying the XL cupcakes rather than the mini ones — and go for more unique flavors like caramel apple or carrot cake rather than the simple vanilla or chocolate. Credit cards are accepted!

After dinner my friend was craving for cupcakes! Of course, we turned to Unilocal and decided to try this place. By the way, finding parking is really a pain.
