One reason that Sunset Designers and Builders has been a successful business since 1948, more than 64 years, is our ability to meet the changing lifestyles of our customers. More importantly, we realize that the outdoor living space of each customer must meet their unique needs, that deserve our personalized attention.

Whatever the dreams of the customer, enhancing a property for better outdoor living is the specialty of John Zahn and Sunset Designers and Builders.

History

Established in 1948.

In 1948, two Long Beach residents started Sunset Fence Company on American Avenue, now Long Beach Blvd., which specialized in custom wooden fences.

Their first employee was Bob Dare, who was hired to sell the services of the company. Bob became one of the partners in 1950, and the company changed its name to Sunset Designers and Builders in 1960 as the company gradually changed into a swimming pool and construction company.

In 1991, John Zahn purchased the business from Bob, his step-​father and the other partners at the time. Since that time, John has been the sole owner of the business, a premier outdoor living specialty company. Times have changed and John has changed the business accordingly. No longer is a display office needed, now the customers want the information and samples taken directly to their home. The sales force shrunk to one, John, who can personally manage each job. The internet is now a valuable tool for communication and looking for pictures and ideas.

Meet the Business Owner

Business Owner

John is a hands-​on-​owner and operator who has more than 30 years of diversified experience in construction and design theory and practicum.

John began working at Sunset Designers and Builders while he was in high school. By the time he was in college, he had become the outside sales representative for the company.

With an education in chemical engineering, John brought his love of design and his extensive knowledge of swimming pool and masonry construction to the business. His expertise is in bringing a customer’s concepts for their yard from their dreams to the time when they are enjoying their new outdoor living space to the fullest.

He guarantees that he will follow each job personally on a regular basis from start to finish so that the homeowner can be assured that it will be constructed correctly and meet all of their expectations.
