The Longmont Public Library is a municipal library serving the residents of Longmont, Colorado. In addition to books on the shelf, the library offers eBooks, digital downloadable magazines, online courses and streaming or downloading movies. The library is part of the Prospector interlibrary loan consortium that allows Longmont residents to borrow items from over 40 libraries in Colorado. History

Established in 1907.

1871: Elizabeth Thompson of NYC, builds Longmont’s first library called Library Hall.

1888: The Women’s Christian Temperance Union opens its first public reading room, to provide a place for those adverse to frequenting the town’s saloons, and to give farmer’s wives a place to rest while in town to trade.

1907: The library, still located in the WTCU reading room, becomes part of the City of Longmont on March 12, 1907.

1912 – 13: The city receives funds from Andrew Carnegie to build a free public library. The town is required to provide a site and contribute annual funds to its operations. The building is built in 1912 and opens January 1913.

1972: By the 1960’s, the Carnegie building becomes crowded a new library building is built as part of a civic building project called «Project 75».

1992 – 93: Today’s light, bright, 50,000 square foot building is built. The new library is dedicated on July 19, 1993.

2007: Longmont Library celebrates 100 years of service to the community.
