SquareWine and Spirits offers unique and off-​the-​beaten-​path bottles of wine for affordable prices. We pride ourselves on a community atmosphere and staff who get to know frequent customers and their tastes. We encourage a community attitude through free tastings every Thursday and Friday night where groups often gather and join the staff in discussing the wines & spirits being offered. We drink and sell wine because it is our passion and it is fun. We hope that we can pass some of that on to you.

History

Established in 2007.

Square Wine & Spirits FORMERLY Court Square Wine & Spirits opened its doors in April of 2007. The goal was to use the fantastic, open space we had acquired and create a community centered environment where people would come in to chat with the staff about wine and spirits, hang out and read a magazine on our big blue couch, or enjoy one of our many events that is going on throughout the year.

We pride ourselves on introducing our customers to amazing wine and spirits that they may have never heard of and then providing an amazing value as well.

Square Wine & Spirits is the largest wine and liquor store in Long Island City. We are dedicated to supporting Long Island City and its diverse community in many ways. We feature local artists on our walls the entire year round. We also participate in community events both in store and out.

Meet the Manager

Maegan K.

Manager

Maegan is the General Manager and Wine Buyer for SquareWine & Spirits in Long Island City Queens. She has been in the wine industry since 2008.

She attended the Professional Culinary Institute in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. She studied under Master Sommelier David Glancy of The Court of Master Sommeliers. Maegan is an Introductory Level Sommelier with The Court as well. She considers working with wine both her greatest pleasure and achievement.

Maegan has had the fortune of meeting many winemakers in California, New York, and France. She looks forward to travelling the world, enjoying the culinary and beverage delights of many destinations in the future.

As the only liquor store in the area I am continually let down at how poorly the store is stocked. Most every time I go there they are out of what I need, and even the most basic items. Unfortunately I have to go to the hassle of getting spirits and wine in Manhattan. And prices are not great either.

This is a spacious space with wide selections of many liquors. The staff is knowledgeable and able to recommend great pairings. Once in a while, they don’t have what I was looking for, but they do have similar alternative. It does help to expand my range of choices though.

As the only wine and liquor store in the immediate area I am always disappointed by what a small selection they have — especially for how big the store is. It just seems like whenever I stop in there for something they don’t have it. Need a bottle of lambrusco or prosecco for a spring picnic? They don’t have any. Need a bottle of flavored vodka for a speciality cocktail? They don’t have any. Need a basic bottle of champagne? You’ll have to settle for another random sparkling wine instead. I want to support my local small businesses but I find myself bringing stuff home from Manhattan because the selection is always so limited.

Decent selection for an area that lacks an abundance of liquor stores.
A sales associate pointed me in the direction that I needed to go, but forgot to include my Unilocal check-​in discount when I purchased my item. His flustered demeanor over refunding the amount and processing my purchase a second time made me feel a little unsettled, but I realized that it wasn’t my problem. The prices aren’t great here, but like I said, it’s one of the few options in the area, so I can’t really complain.

i’ve been going here since they opened a few years ago.
Use to be great they had anything you might want.
over the past year things have really gone down hill .
You’re lucky to even find Liquor in this place on most days.
Now i normally dnt even write these things
Today I felt i had to .
I went there and i thought, oh great Liquor they have Rum today .
But to my surprise when I paid for it, the same bottle of rum i had bought there for years had gone up 40% over night.
Now i paid for it but not before asking about the increase .
To which the clerk replied, «i don’t set the prices»…
So i left with my over priced bottle of rum but before i walked down the block i decided to return it ‚
To which the clerk replied we don’t take returns, and then he said because I know you I’ll take it back.
In short don’t waste your time, and did i mention the hipster D-​bag with beard (who certainly has no time for anyone) who works there?
I’ll return when they have new owners .
At the rate they’re going it should be soon…

I went to Square Wine a couple of Saturdays ago and was helped by a handsome tall associate who was very friendly and knowledgeable of the very vast selection of wines and liquors in the shop. I was impressed! I will definitely visit again for future Saturday last minute booze needs — reasonable prices, good selection and cute and cool staff, a dream come true!

I am very impressed with this place, it’s definitely my go-​to wine store in LIC. It’s always clean & classy. The selection is great and the employees are super friendly and helpful. They always have great deals on inexpensive red wines, and the employees always seem to have tried all of them, so they know what they’re talking about and give great recommendations. Also, they have a punch card system, so for every 10 bottles of wine you buy, you get one free (which is great if you drink as much wine as I do!)

Pros: really broad selection of wines and liquor. They have a lot of different scotches if you like to try different types. Their prices aren’t good but they aren’t the worst I’ve seen.
Cons: service is really poor. I cannot stress this enough. Do not expect any help or suggestion from the staff. There is one staff member in particular who won’t say a single word to you while you are there even if you speak directly to him (you’ll know him by his beard).
In short, if you need something on the way to the subway, then it will suffice, but it isn’t the friendly, neighborhood wine store that you hope it will be.

I first must say that I love their recent re-​branding, it really reflects the change in the neighborhood itself. The staff is always friendly and accommodating, and they all have been a boon to my budding connoisseurship, and subsequent oenophilia.
They have a great selection, totally reasonable prices, and occasionally I’ll walk in and see they are having a party/​event/​charity benefit!
Basically they are my fav booze depot in LIC – can you tell?

Mediocre selection, especially of Italian wine. Lots of plonk, so if you’re looking for Yellow Tail, this is your place. And what’s with the pseudo-​hipster guys at check out? They’re either rude or indifferent. It wouldn’t kill them to say thank you or even acknowledge you as a human being spending money in the store. I can’t believe people here think this is a good wine store. It’s not.

Court Square Wine and Spirits is a great place not only for it’s wide assortment of wine and liquor, but they have a large space, which feels exciting to walk into. The staff is super friendly and sweet. I don’t know much about alcohol, but I love being introduced to new cocktails. Every time I have gone into Court Square one of several handsome, bearded men give me the proper attention I need in finding the right stuff. The staff there has always given me incredible ideas for parties etc. Daisy and Roddy maybe its just you because I have never had a bad experience with the «bearded cashiers».

Would you like some Mount Gay rum? Myers’s? Appleton? Barbancourt? Other classic rums for grown-​ups, eschewed by the Captain Morgan crowd?
How about George Dickel bourbon or plain old Jim Beam black label rye? Old Grand Dad, Old Weller, Rebel Yell, Ancient Age? Perhaps a lovely assortment of cognacs and armagnacs? Gin! Boodles, Bombay Sapphire, even humble Gordon’s?
What about the Bandit brands of cheap boxed wines that sit quietly in the door of your fridge and don’t clank around like bottles, at the ready for when you need to add some white to the sauté you’re putting together?
How about a port – any port – to gift to your Aunt Marie who loves to poach pears, and take the occasional nip?
Sound good? Then go to Vernon Blvd. and shop there, because this place has the thinnest stock ever. The sign says Wine and Spirits, yet the store offers countless empty shelves. They stock flavored rums and fruit-​flavored bourbons for junior alcoholics and a very limited stock in general. Considering «spirits» is in their name, it’s truly odd. On the wine side, there aren’t many of those, either.
I don’t know if this is a money-​laundering front or what, but it’s not a good liquor store for people who entertain a lot, or like to keep a stocked bar. Seeking to purchase a particular, if common, brand or bottle, I’ve left empty-​handed too many times. I finally had to Unilocal,after 5? 7? years. It’s too bad, because they are conveniently located near my place, forgodsake.
In short, what Roddy said, all of it, particularly about the bearded, indifferent cashier. Heh. Too true.
The second star is for the large space.

The selection is great, with lots of mid-​price and bargain wines. But shopping there can be weird. Sometimes the staff is really engaged and helpful; but often, they act like they are stoned: like you’re not even standing there, and if you are they could not care less.

I know very little about wines and liquor. So little that I am probably insulting those who actually know little to be grouped in their company. That being said, I wouldn’t feel entirely comfortable sharing the same bench as those who know Absolutely nothing about spirits. Those two musings said, I am not even sure if I used the word «spirits» correctly. That’s my disclaimer.
This shop is clean and expansive. Tons of choices and lots at great prices. I saw so many under 10 dollar bottles, it seemed incongruous how nice it was and not dingy such as a discount shop would be. They have high end to low end items, but me, I tend to look at low numbers — sorry ladies. The attendants of the store are knowledgeable and helpful at all times. If they don’t have what you’re looking for, they are more than willing to order it rather than give that ‘tough cheese’ shrug.
I want them to have more business. Those who are so hard working and passionate deserve much success.
