My experience from the moment I picked up the phone to reach out for help for my daughter and contacted Center for Discovery to the moment she was released from their care, was comforting and professional. It was very difficult taking her there, leaving her in the care of people I don’t know in a town several hours away. But within the first 36 hours she thanked me and shared that she knew she needed to be there. Communication with the staff was continual during her stay, and her individual and family therapist, Peter, is amazing. She has her work cut out for her heading into adulthood in the real world, and I believe that her experience at CFD gave her some insights and understanding of her self and the world that will support her along the way. I send love and support to any parent who is searching to know what that move is for their own child, and encourage you to give CFD a call.

My daughter just graduated CFD. My whole experience with this facility was nothing but positive! All of the staff was awesome and I couldn’t say enough good things about all of them. Miss Sonja was wonderful. Her therapist Peter was super helpful and helped our family grow and learn and we will miss him. My daughter is on a wonderful path and has been given a lot of tools to deal with lots of life’s problems! We are super super grateful to CFD! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND CFD!

I am an uncle of my fiancée’s nephew, who has been struggling with personal issues due to family history. Meeting for his sessions weekly at CFD, I felt that the staff truly cared about his success and development as a young man. He is now at home with us and I’m proud of his progress thus far. Aside from these centers, what kids need is parents and family to engage them in REAL relationships and to spend time fostering healthy habits with love and support.

Wow. My son just described his time with Center for Discovery as one of the best experiences of his life. Who would have thought??? He grew spiritually. He broke out of his shell. He became a leader and helped to encourage the other reluctant kids to accept and learn what they were trying to teach them. Instead of fighting the program and just going through the motions, he fully immersed himself in everything that these caring counselors and staff were trying to instill in him. Within a month, he seemed like a completely new person with respect, empathy, ambition… you name it. He evolved into this young man that I always knew was there but was hidden during his years of drug abuse. He is now feeling healthy and clear headed. He is much more loving towards us. He is communicating honestly with us about everything. He is determined to stay sober and get everything he possibly can get out of life now. Thank you, thank you, thank you. As others have mentioned here on Unilocal,we also would like to express a special thank you to Robert Wilton, my son’s individual therapist. He is a saint in my eyes. He cares so deeply for these kids and truly takes a personal interest in their sobriety and future. My son fully trusted him. He listened to him. He opened up to him. He did everything over and above what was expected of him and I think that had a lot to do with the respect he had for Robert. We are forever grateful to the entire staff of CFD. This was a very scary situation to find ourselves in but we see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

Our personal experience at Center for Discovery in Long Beach, as you can imagine, words cannot describe how one feels when they have to place their child in a rehab facility. Regardless of whether or not you feel like your child needs it or not, it is heart breaking. Tears and tears and tears… No matter how hard you try to convince yourself you are doing the right thing, you are still at a loss and second, third, fourth and fifth guessing of yourself. We knew we were doing the right thing and we were very very happy with the facility, employees and the help that was received there. Not for only our child but for our family as a whole. Regardless of what one believes, it is NOT just the child’s issue, it is a FAMILY issue and it is imperative that it is dealt with that way or success is much less likely.
In our child’s case, we also had issues that needed to be dealt with in regard to school and they went ABOVE and BEYOND to ensure that our child’s school career wouldn’t be effected and had a seamless transition. Alicia was a LIFESAVER!
We really learned a lot about each other, our family dynamic, what we need to work on and what we need to change. We are all forever works in progress. This program was a true lifesaver on so many levels. As our therapist Peter said he hopes to not see us again. I felt like we had an extended family there. We really felt like people cared and we weren’t alone. Being in this situation is really difficult and many people don’t talk about it because of that. Their family group meetings are the best and really appreciated the kids input as well as other parents going through the same thing. We really had a good experience and because our child went to CFD, we have a much higher chance of Peter’s wish of us not having to come back coming true. Ultimately though, its our child’s work and actions that will dictate that.
Thank you CFD (Center for Discovery) and most of all Peter for helping our family become healthier, happier and most of all… start to put it back together to make it even better than before. There aren’t enough words to express our gratitude.

Quality therapy based rehab center. Not appropriate for someone with serious substance abuse problems in my opinion due to the short stay. Staff went over and above to help my 16 year old get transported to a LTC facility. Worked with insurance companies and actually know the procedures to get insurance stays approved.

There is no absolute way to ensure your child gets the best care when you are away from them. It is hard to let go. But, there comes a time when you have to. Because you can’t do it all. No matter how hard you try, you just can’t provide the daily therapy and recovery that your child needs. That’s where we were when we found Center For Discovery.
From the initial contact with Kevin, through the therapy that our son received from Ryan and Robert, the process for our family was supportive, outreaching, caring and communicative. Our son had been to one other place for inpatient therapy where we were treated as «the outsiders» and possibly «the problem» we had caused for our son. CFD treated us as the loving family that we are. They reminded us that it was our son who needed to do the work while supporting him while he was in their care. We were also reminded and challenged to do some work at home.
The weekly therapy conversations Ryan and Robert had with our son challenged him beyond what he thought he was capable of. This, and only this, allowed him to reach into his sub conscientiousness and live in the moments to help him uncover and understand his addictions.
Our son’s time at CFD was, and continues to be life changing for him and our family. He is now moving forward after his time in CFD in a sober living environment where he is adjusting to his new outlook on life.
Here is the most important part, though… our son decided to stop blaming the world for his addictions. He decided to look inward. He made the decision himself. With the support and caring of the environment that he lived in in cfd. Without that step, without that support, our son could not have gone forward.
Nothing is perfect. Our children have to figure out the world, and how their addictions will affect the rest of their lives. But, CFD is a place where many do. It takes a tremendous amount of effort and dedication to to do what our children do to recover, and what CFD does to support them. I hope this helps you find a place for your child. We never give up on them.

I don’t even know where to begin because this place helped my son save his life. Every staff member at Center for Discovery truly cares about every teen who walks through the door, willing or not willing to be there. We were treated with respect every step of the way. The change in my son’s nihilist, my way or the highway attitude, lack of respect, and alcohol abuse has changed dramatically.
We lost our son to substance abuse starting about two years ago and he almost died because of it. CFD helped him take his life back and for the first time in two years, he is hopeful for the future, and actually wants to help others in his situation. I can’t say enough great things about CFD, but a special shout out goes to Robert Wilton, my son’s therapist. Without him, I don’t think my son would have achieved the level of success in treatment that he did.
We will be eternally grateful for this program.

Our daughter arrived at the Center for Discovery with some degree of willingness to participate, but this disappeared the next day and was replaced by rage for being taken there by surprise and fear for the loss of liberty she then understood may last 30 days. She refused to participate in treatment, refused to resume medication for her depression, and she threatened to leave if we didn’t come get her right away. She actually walked out the door twice, but agreed to return when approached by staff. After about 4 days, she agreed to resume medication, however, 10 days later, her depression had not improved. Safety agreements were signed and her dosage was increased. Her resistance to treatment went on for 21 days, although we heard she was participating somewhat. We were so discouraged. There were glimmers of hope along the way. The multi family support group helped us to see other clients further along in the program, giving us reason to hope. The family therapy and family visits were opportunities for discussion with our daughter and to show her our solidarity with her. Finally, on the 24^th day, we took her for an off site visit. To our surprise, she told us the Center was a solid program and she knew she belonged there, and admitted she was an addict. She had started working the steps of AA, started making amends and showed an obvious change in her perspective about blame, addiction, understanding that resuming ties with former addicts would be a threat to a sobriety which she clearly prized. She willingly returned to the Center after the visit without begging for us to take her home, and to our shock, completely reversed her position about staying in a sober living home for women. Coincidentally, the insurance stopped covering her treatment around this time, and two days later she was discharged. We dropped her off at the sober home earlier tonight, and are amazed at the turnaround we have seen in our daughter. The staff was extremely professional, kind and encouraging. They helped us stay centered during a very difficult time in our lives. They cover every facet of addiction and mental health problems with a structured program aimed to replace destructive habits with individual and group therapy, physical exercise, the principles of AA, etc. We would highly recommend the program at Center for Discovery, and are very grateful for their dedication and passion for teens in this situation.

A recent update: Since my one-​star review on Unilocal,stating that my daughter was expelled from this house after having an argument with another teen, the Center for Discovery sent us a bill for $ 3,000. Was this retribution? My daughter was refused treatment at this center over two years ago, and attempted suicide shortly thereafter, and was hospitalized for over a week, almost losing her life. Her condition worsened after the Center for Discovery called 911 to have her committed to a mental hospital in LA, which did nothing but make her condition worse. Parents Beware! We are now being abused by the Center with threatening letters!

Center for Discovery is by far the very BEST treatment for adolescence. If my daughter didn’t go there, I believe with all my heart that she would have killed herself. What they did for her and my family is tremendous. Something happens there that is magical. I slowly got my daughter back. My daughter is sober. She follows the 12 steps. She has a full time job. She is living on her own. She has this amazing spirit and there is just something so special about her. I would have none of that if it wasn’t for Discovery. I believe one of the most important things that Discovery does and it is so crucial… They care after treatment. Their aftercare is… there is nothing like it. I have this new BIG family now. They are as committed to our family’s recovery now as they were 3 years ago. Not only did they save my beautiful daughter’s life, they gave me one. There is no other program out there like this one. TRUST ME !!! Do you want to know why? Discovery is authentically there… always. The beginning, The middle, and the journey after. I am forever humbled and grateful for this program.

We could not ask for a better treatment facility than the Center for Discovery to treat our child. We had a chance to tour another facility, and we were highly impressed by many aspects of Center for Discovery. The staff at Center for Discovery, has the right kind of energy to deal with teens suffering with the issues that brought them there. They are professional and kind. While our son was there, we felt safe. We could see the growth and progress from visit to visit. Kids receive all kinds of therapy, as well as weekly multi-​family meetings with parents as well as private family sessions.
They are in a safe, structured and nurturing environment. Constantly supervised (4:1). There is growth and learning. They go by a level system in which kids earn privileges based on completion of important tasks. They socialize and share.
They learn good habits. They are taken to the YMCA every morning. Eat home cooked meals. Snack on healthy food only. They are taken on hikes. Our child was allowed to bring his guitar as part of his therapy. No electronics whatsoever. No phones or tv. Computers only for homework. IF they move up a level, they are allowed to listen to music on an MP3 player (no Ipods/​IPads) for the gym. Phone calls are limited to child/​parents during the first weeks in treatment. It’s a complete detox. Only 16 beds. If your insurance covers treatment at Center for Discovery or you can afford it, look no more.
They are provided with school time.
We only have good things to say. From the facility itself, to the care provided.
There is nothing that Center for Discovery could have done better during the 5 weeks that our son was in treatment. I am highly impressed and forever grateful that a place like this exists to help families and children going through issues like ours.
Everyone there treats you with genuine care. Regardless of how this journey continues after treatment, Center for Discovery did a wonderful job. Mena is an amazing therapist. Kevin W (counselor) is a great role model for the kids. Thank you and Nooshi Alicia, Mike & Robert.

This is an one of the best choices to turn to when you have a teen that has severe drug addiction and/​or behavior issues and are at the end of your rope as a parent. My son is a drug addict and at 16 had taken everything from alcohol, weed, Xanax, wax, etc sometime several at the same time. He had been arrested many times for theft and drug dealing. He stayed here for over a month and came out a different person. He has been sober since he left here. This place is amazing and so is the staff. The entire time I never had to worry because they keep the teens safe (even from each other with the many security measures in place) and treat them well with a lot of healthy activity and therapy and very good home cooked meals. For example, almost every morning they are taken to the gym. They do therapy all day long in different groups and also have school time. The teens are taken to different AA meeting every evening and have assigned chores and responsibilities daily. And of course there are always consequences if the teens do not adhere. Also there is the time where you can talk to your teen on the phone and visiting times. It is definitely a very intensive and serious environment for a teen with serious problems. This place saved my teen and no only gave him the strength go back into the normal world sober but to go back to the normal world honestly and with confidence.
