I have been living directly across the street from big john’s for 3 years now. That being said, I have been there more times then I can count and never realized they were on Unilocal! The guy with the dreads is Mike. Super cool laid back dude who basically lives there. You can find almost anything you need in this little place and they’re mostly reasonably priced. They are usually open by 730am and close at 10 on weekdays and 11 on weekends. Everyone is really nice and helpful. Only reason I’m giving it 4 stars is cuz it’s so small and sometimes hard to find things though the building is protected by the city so there is never a chance of expansion.

I realized that when looking for a new apartment in Long Beach, I should have looked a little better when it came to what was around me before settling. My last place was fairly nice inside, much bigger, that’s for sure. It wasn’t the«Gay Ghetto», but the FORREALS ghetto this time. There wasn’t much in the way of walkable food or liquor stores or what have you. At least none that both my ex and I could agree on. Thankfully Big John’s had all the liquor, beer, random food items and closeness that we needed. This became my go to liquor store, which I visited more times than my check-ins say. The guy at the register was an interesting guy. Usually quiet. He knew the prices on almost everything there(or was making them up ha ha ha). He had dreads and such, my ex saw him as a Deftones fan and so that’s what she nicknamed him«Deftones». I got a good amount of distinct check-ins on Untappd from all the stuff they had. Like Stella Artois Cider(spelled Cidre, oooo fancy!) and well some other beers. It’s tight through the aisles, but they have usually what you need and a pretty friendly. Definitely helped me when I needed it.
