History

Established in 1957.

On March 15, 1957, William T. Bill Thornton incorporated Thornton Chevrolet, Inc. to be the Chevrolet/​Oldsmobile dealer in Douglasville, Georgia. The original dealership was located on West Broad Street, Douglasville, in the block immediately west of the Douglas County Courthouse. Formerly, B. R. Kirkley Chevrolet and Portlock Chevrolet had held the franchise. Bill Thornton relocated to Douglasville from the Grove Park section of Atalanta, where he had been first a used car Dealer, and then a Hudson/​Renault/​Peugeot Dealer.

In 1967, the Oldsmobile franchise was sold and in November of 1968, the Chevrolet dealership moved to its present location at 1971 Thronton Road in Lithia Springs. Bill Thorrnton remained the Dealer until the end of 1982, although his son, John W. Thornton, had been operating the store for some time. On January 1, 1983, John became the Dealer, and at present is the Chairman of the Board.
