South Pacific Dinner Show at Kauai Beach Resort

This was a fun show, though maybe a bit overpriced. The food was good, but nothing stellar. The show itself is fun, lively, and enthusiastic. Given the limitations of performing such a show in such a tiny corner of the world, I think they did a great job. (This was my first time seeing South Pacific, so I don’t know if the plot or the characters were portrayed ‘correctly’.) Pricing was just too high, though.

This was fantastic!!! The food was 5 star! And the show was awesome also. We had a very good time and felt it was worth every penny. Don’t miss this. They only have showings on Wednesday evenings, so be sure to go.

This show was really bad. Luther was a new jersy con artist not really true to the movie. The Frenchmen? He was horrible. Find someone else to play that part. The sailors were good, the officers female lead and LT were better than average. The best actor was Bloody Mary and she was the alternate. The acoustics were terrible. We were in the very front and I had a hard time hearing. At the end of show I was hoping no one would stand up because I would have refused to give them a standing ovation. Thank God not a soul stood up. The best thing about the evening was the food. It was a good buffet but I dropped over 200 bucks for a buffet? The joke was on me. There are better things to do in Kauai then go to this show

This show was really, really bad, and really expensive. The food was awful too. Our concierge at our hotel on the North Shore recommended this show to us, and we booked it without doing our due diligence. Shame on us.
The show is literally a rendition of the South Pacific musical adapted for a hotel ballroom stage, all on a shoestring budget. It was absurdly expensive (read: $ 70+/person). This included a mediocre dinner buffet. The shocking part was there were no drinks of any sort included, aside from coffee and iced tea. Insane at that price.
Once everyone has a chance to hit the buffet, you find your seats for the show. This is literally in a converted hotel ballroom, so your reserved seats are around one of many round tables like you’d see at a wedding reception. The sets are old and tired, and aside from maybe one cast member, none of them could really sing or act. With the variety of settings in the musical, it just doesn’t work on a tiny hotel ballroom stage. I’m not sure where they spend all the money they make from the ludicrous ticket prices, but it’s sure not on the show.
TL;DR: We left at intermission. A luau is cheaper, has better food, and at least includes mixed drinks and soda. $ 4 for maybe 8oz. of soda was comical. A luau is also outside and generally entertaining. This was a really bad show. I feel horrible recommending a luau, but save yourself a lot of time, and a lot of money, and go to a luau. I’m only giving it two stars because I think the remote location should be taken into account when judging something like this.

I loved this show. It was very well done and we had a great time. Dinner was good and one of the highlights of Kauai vacation.

Considering the location the show was pretty good! It definitely wasn’t a 5star broadway show but it was fun to see a show while on vacation. The food buffet, teriyaki/​potatoes/​salad/​iced tea was good also. The price seemed a little high ($ 80) but we had a good time.

Is it a dinner? Is it a show? It’s a dinner show. Once a week local production of South Pacific. Been going on for years. The movie was filmed on Kauai, what better location than Kauai for a production of South Pascific. Held at the Kauai Beach Resort, in the ballroom. Not the best venue of a musical show. But they made it work. Food was conference standard. Edible, nothing to write home about. The cast was enthusiastic. The guys were a bit uneven at the beginning, but settled in and started belting out the songs. Make no mistake, this is a guys show. Lots of good male choral pieces. Lt Cable sounded like he was from Philly. Turns out the guy playing the part is from Plymouth Meeting. Nice touch. No run thru’s prior to the performance, these guys just show up and do it. If you’re looking for a Broadway level production, this is not. If you’re looking for an enjoyable evening of musical entertainment, this it it.

In consideration of where this musical is, the limited resources it has and again, where the musical is. I was very pleased. I was confused about how to get to the «box office» because one doesn’t exist. You check in near the entrance to the ball room and had to stand in line in a very muggy and hot hallway. I noticed some frustration with guest and rightfully so. You have to walk all the way to the front, check in and then walk all the way back to the end of the hall to get in line again. Don’t worry, the early bird doesn’t get the best seat as tables are pre assigned. Perfectly done so there isn’t any drama of people trying to grab seats. By the way. This show is in a hotel ball room. Not an auditorium.
The dinner– I have had way worse and I have had way better. But, it was flavourful enough to satisfy. Don’t go in with the idea that you are getting prime rib from a carving board, a Vegas buffet, 5 star restaurant or anything other than a kitchen trying to service about 150 people in 90 minutes. Teriyaki chicken, lemon caper mahi, assortment of vegan salads, fruit, vegetables, mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, rolls and cakes. My 7 year old would have eaten everything except the tomatoes in the salads. They have a cash bar that serves wine and tropical drinks. Mango tea, coffee and water are the house options and all were good.
Take your time eating and socializing with your new table mates. It’s great connecting with new people unless you are a troll that lives under a bridge. If you rush your food down your throat be prepared to sit and listen and talk to you new friend for about an hour before the show starts. So use this time to smoke a pack, read a book, take a swim or pretend to be interested. Just kidding, open up your boundaries and share a story. Also, make sure you get your fill of tea and coffee because once the show starts you won’t see anymore. Which kind of stinks because there is an intermission in the show. Once everyone has had their turn to speak at the table, it’s time to shuffle your seats and get ready for South Pacific.
The stage is configured of risers so you are just below eye level while watching. The set consists of very well made back drops that allow for easy act changes. The props are well made and are enough for scene assistance. There is a musician that plays all of the piano tunes for the whole show. The singing was great, the acting was entertaining and even intentionally corny which made it funny. The sound system is adequate for the room but was more of a set up for a wedding reception. Although there was someone controlling a soundboard the bellowing bass of Emile was overpowering and drowned out Nellie on occasion. All an easy fix and the downside of working in a square box vs and auditorium. It wasn’t bad enough to annoy me away from the story. The traditional hula, Polynesian warrior dance and taiko drum dance were as well performed as most luau’s.
This musical is home on Kauai. It’s Bali Hai, small, simple, local and cheesy at times. The director and choreographer aren’t trying to reinvented the wheel or make it so elaborate that it noticeably looks like they are trying to hard.

The only thing that matters out of all of this, is to be prepared for island entertainment. It’s not Broadway, it’s not in a 2000 seat auditorium with a live orchestra. You are not having a meal prepared by Roy Yamaguchi. If anything in your head is leading you along these lines then stay in your hotel and pout because this island wasn’t for you. Don’t go to the show and walk in with your predisposition and bad attitude only to slam it without giving it a chance.
I would go, eat and be happy if I had the chance to do it again.

Wow. Crappy nursing home food, expensive, weak drinks and a performance that is hard to criticize — the actors really put their best into it. But the production fell flat … flatter than flat. So flat, it was concave.

I went to see this show with my family for vacation. The Kaua’i Beach Resort is quite beautiful: it has an amazing view of the beach (which is really only steps away!) and an incredible set of pools with a waterslide… but I digress.
The food was enjoyable, and I thought the garlic mashed potatoes were delicious, despite the orange sort of grease they seemed to be floating in… However, the food was quite good overall. They had good cocktails, but be sure to get them early! They had run out of some ingredients by intermission. Previous comments are correct; definitely watch your liquid intake before the show!
As for the show, it was subpar. While they have some experienced performers, those performers (specifically Bloody Mary) could not manage to pick up the slack for the rest of the performers. For such a classic show, you would think that they would cast more quality performers. The acting was stiff and unconvincing, and failed to bring the story to life. Having never seen the show before, I had no idea where the drama was until part-​way through the second half! The Polynesian dancing was enjoyable, though.
On a side note, when we were walking into the dining/​performance area before the show, I spoke with the man that played Joe Cable, and asked him how he was. He said he was tired since he had been at the resort all day. His performance was unable to convince me otherwise.
Overall, I thought the event matched the $ 80 pricetag: $ 30 for the meal, $ 10 for the show, and $ 40 for the expensive resort fees that accompany a vacation to Kaua’i.

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the music again, and the performers voices were great. This is the longest running production of South Pacific anywhere, and for that it was fun to see. I sat in the back, and I also had a good seat. I am a vegetarian, and enjoyed the food. Entertainment on this rural island is sparce, and I really enjoyed being able to have the opportunity to do something special during my stay.

Very disappointing. For $ 80 per person you get at best a middle school level play at almost Broadway prices. Food was better than average, although if you are a vegetarian do not expect anything very tasty. The production is in a conference room at the hotel so the only good view is from the front row (although I did not have that vantage point). Performers were lackluster except Bloody Mary who was the only one who seemed to be really trying to entertain.
