History

Established in 2005.

Soji Zen Center is a contemporary Buddhist center providing instruction in Zen meditation, philosophy and contemplation techniques for training the mind. We are guided by our founding teacher, Abbott Jules Shuzen Harris Sensei.

Soji Zen Center is part of the White Plum lineage which brings together elements of Japanese Soto and Rinzai traditions of Zen Buddhism to teach intensive awareness sitting practice (Zazen) and koan study (Zen riddles) to beginners who want to learn about meditation, as well as to experienced practitioners of Zen Buddhism to strengthen their technique. «Soji is a place where people can go to slow down, meditate and learn about the healing qualities of the mind.» said Jules Shuzen Harris. «We all agree that training the body through exercise and diet is beneficial, but rarely in Western society do we focus on awakening the healing energies in our brain.»

Business Owner

Jules Shuzen Harris holds an Ed.D. with a concentration in applied human development. As a psychotherapist, Dr. Harris has found creative ways to synthesize Western psychology and Zen to achieve dramatic results with his patients.

In 2005, he founded Soji Zen Center located in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. The primary purpose of the Center is to offer contemporary Buddhist instruction on Zen meditation, philosophy and contemplation techniques. Shuzen offers dharma teaching for beginners at local colleges, health organizations, and yoga groups, as well as instruction for experienced practitioners of Zen Buddhism to strengthen their technique and continue training their minds. To that end, he also holds workshops at the Center, a weekly study group, and meditation every Sunday along with dharma talks.

Shuzen is a Soto priest who has been practicing Buddhism for more than thirty years.
