Came in tonight(second time eating here) and it was amazing. Favorite sushi place in OC. Their sushi nigiri is to die for and the staff is very friendly!

Best sushi in orange county — Leave your attitude at the door This place is always slammed because the food is AMAZING. This is a family run business with 3 – 4 people on staff and A line out the door. If you are needy whiny baby that is looking for over the top customer service with a smile this is not the place for you. To all the people with negative reviews about this place maybe you would be better suited at the freaking olive garden where the people have to smile and be fake nice to you.

Went here for the first time with my friend! Service was good and pretty fast; we sat at the bar. It was a Monday night so it was mostly empty but I prefer it that way because the eating experience is more peaceful. :3 All of the fish were super fresh: I recommend getting the toro salmon(AKA salmon belly) and the yellowtail belly. The ama ebi was good but the raw shrimp part itself was kind of small. They have a variety of high quality fish which I wouldn’t have expected from a place in Lake Forest haha. Chef Young was really knowledgeable in sushi and we had a great conversation with him about it! Will be returning.

Food was unremarkable, service was OK, prices were high for the unremarkable food quality and rundown atmosphere. There are much better sushi places in the area.

This place is the best sushi inland you can get. Its fresh, the chefs are authentic traditional sushi chefs, and they are very attentive to their customers. Everything is good, but particularly the uni and the baby yellowtail stood out. Great selection of cold sakes of all different price ranges. Its small with not a lot of seating so go early to get a spot at the bar. They open at 5pm and start getting full quick. The freshness is key here. The sashimi does not call for any soy for its so full of flavor. They keep their uni in salt water until serving to keep it fresh. No one else does that. Check this place out.

I live in the Woods neighborhood right near this sushi bar, we have been here several times and always had pretty good service, tonight was bad, the server was very rude, we asked her for some extra napkins as we had our five-year-old daughter with us, she tossed one at my husband… let me repeat ONE napkin!!! She was very rude and short with us when taking our order and our crunchy hand roll came out with brown avocado in it! Yucky!!! When paying $ 50 plus for sushi there should always be good service and fresh food! PERIOD!!! I worked in the restaurant industry for many years so I know about good customer service this was not, it was terrible!!! Our server acted as if we were lucky to be in the restaurant! When you are running a restaurant you need to have good customer service, End of story!!! That is her tip for the day! We will not be coming back anytime soon! Too many other good sushi bars and restaurants in town. Sayonara!

Got takeout from here a few days ago. I had a really gnarly sushi craving and I was sick of my usual places, so I looked to Unilocal! As usual, it never fails me! I ordered the sunshine roll and zen roll and both were really good! One thing I liked is that they answered the phone quickly and the woman spoke slowly and clearly, which is very important to me when ordering in somewhere. The food was ready right when they said it would be and it is reasonably priced. It’s definitely my new takeout sushi place for when I have a craving!

Really really good sushi. The lasagna rolls are our favorite. The place is kind of small in a run down strip mall area so we were very pleasantly surprised that the food was so good. Been there a few times already and haven’t been disappointed. This is our new go-to sushi restaurant.

My husband and I were pleasantly surprised! The quality, price and customer service were fantastic. The waitress knew almost everyone by name and the food came out within 10 minutes of ordering. They had happy hour on Friday and the specials were legit. I highly recommend!

Our new favorite sushi place! Food is great with reasonable prices. Their Volcano and Japanese Lasagna Rolls are a must-try! Service is great too!

I have eaten at this location numerous times and have always been satisfied when I walk out. Their sushi is very good. The environment is great. Even in the daytime, the lighting compliments the overall experience — dark but well lit. Pricing is standard and waiting times on orders are quite acceptable. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area and will likely continue to eat here around once a month.

Absolutely the worst service here but it earns two stars because the food exceeded my expectations. I ordered the chicken bento box and it was a good size portion and tasty. However, I found myself leaving with bitter when I went to pay and ask for a to go box, which took forever to do. Literally 10 seconds after I left my table the rest of my food was already being trashed! I was very upset to say the least. I won’t ever be returning.

So fresh, so delicious, the place smells a little but fishy but the food I ate didn’t! Great service(sat at the sushi bar & saw my sushi being made right in front of me and the sushi chef was very patient and nice!). Will return again for happy hour now that I’ve tried a range of rolls. Too bad the salmon is farm raised. I still opted to try the Alaskan roll which was yum. The wild big eye tuna was my fav. The baby yellow tail was great too. The blue fin toro was alright. We also ordered the dinner combo A which came with miso soup(basic) sashimi(opted for all tuna which melts in your mouth; so delicate. Another option was to get mixed sashimi which is tuna, salmon and white fish), tempura was good(2 shrimp, broccoli, green bean, sweet potatoe) and beef/chicken teriyaki was tender. $ 1 extra for brown rice. The fish is good stuff here. Chicken and beef are ok(fresh but not as light/delicate as fish; kind of chewy in comparison) Sauce is not too sweet or overpowering. Some people recommended I try the eel but I was too full by the end of the meal Overall, great experience; looking forward to going back for more!

We sat at the Sushi bar, finished our meal, and paid our bill($ 80 for two people). The last thing I ordered was 2 drinks for my girlfriend and I. The Sushi chef actually had the nerve to ask us to leave the Sushi bar to make room for other customers(only a few customers total to begin with) since I had already paid my bill. FYI, the second your bill is paid, they may ask you to leave. Hardly had time to finish the $ 10 beer that I just paid for… Unbelievable. Rude owners. Low quality fish. Steer clear of this establishment.

If I could rate it ZERO I would. Walked in at 8pm Sunday, they say they’re open till 9:30, I wanted to relax after work and have a meal. Instead I’m asked if my name is Linda, to pick up a to-go order. When I say no, I’m handed a menu to order«to-go». Ok, I think, I can change my plans… then I was ignored. She was busy, too busy. So I took my butt elsewhere. Sadly, even if this place has good food I most likely will never return and I already have told others of this being ignored experience. Sushi is not cheap. For heaven’s sake, if you want me to spend $ 50 to feed myself, you’d better make it a memorable experience. I will remember NOT to come back here.

Came with a party of 11 celebrating two birthdays. Service was great. The sashimi was excellent, fresh, and savory. The place was busy on a Friday night, as another party of 11 also was present. It didn’t delay the service and attention. At the end, the waitress asked if we were celebrating anything(two of my granddaughters had Mickey Mouse birthday caps, but it wasn’t their birthdays). I told her my son and daughter had birthdays two weeks apart. She brought out complementary sliced strawberries in whipped cream. A wonderful evening.

I’ve been coming here for over 6 months. What a gem! By far a superior sushi place than most you will encounter. I also enjoy the nabayaki udon and miso soups! I can’t say enough after my experience here. Always great service by the lil lady and her team. She has a big heart and I enjoy coming back. I recommend any of the roles on the menu. Her«sushi artists» do amazing work and create beautiful and delicious meals.

We’ve been coming to Zen regularly since my original review below. We’ve gotten to know Chef Young and Kenny and they are awesome dudes! And we’re not the only ones that think so — all of the regulars(and some non-regulars) love these guys. The fish is always fresh and if you allow Young to be creative, you’ll be rewarded handsomely.(If you give Young carte blanc, be opened minded!) Though most of the people who come here are just looking for regular standard sushi, Zen has the potential and capability to compete with some of the other elite«authentic» sushi joints in Costa Mesa and beyond. Young has done some pretty special things for us, at our request, and continues to make our bellies very happy.
