Maui Surf Clinics

I first came to these guys 7 years ago. My oldest son was then three. He had a 2 hour lesson that day with Peter. He was so little then and it was a really big deal to him. He still remembers that day. So last week we were going back to Maui and I called ahead to have my oldest son and my second son get a lesson. Peter has since moved on but Billy stepped in and was amazing. When we got there my youngest son (5) was dead set against it and scared to death of surfing. Within a few minutes not only were the older two standing up and catching waves Billy had the little one with him on his board and catching waves. All three of my boys were pumped and surfing and I could not have been happier. Billy was super cool and patient with them and they all left with huge smiles and asking for me to buy them surf boards. If your going to Maui and you want to surf this is the place. Don’t waste time or money going to anyone else these guys truly are the best!

This was my second time surfing and my first time in hawaii. My instructor patrick was not only a skilled instructor but also filled with positive energy and joy for surfing. I don’t think I’d love surfing as much as I do today without Patrick, Billy and the other members of the Maui Surf Clinics ohana. If you are looking for a great first time surfing or just looking to improve this is a great choice.

These guys are most excellent. Jason was awesome and super helpful. Will definitely suggest them to my friends that head to Maui. They also do affordable board rental, worth the cash to get the private lesson!

Jason is absolutely the best for 1^st timers and is the definition of a cool laid back surfer. My two sons loved him so much we returned the next day. He starts with a brief intro class then takes you out to the waves. He is a powerful paddler and can easily tows weak swimmers.
He got all of us standing on the board in a short period of time. I probably lost about 5 pounds from the two day experience but then it left more room for eating. It was a memorable part of our trip. I recommend this group highly!!!

Went and had semi private surf lessons with Billy. Very good teacher. Knowledgeable and relaxed with safety and fun in mind. We both got up for some nice long rides several times. Ready to go out on our own now. Thanks Maui Surf Clinic and Billy!

Took my family here to learn to surf; 12,10 and the wife and I. Did the morning session which is better because less wind. Our instructor was Patrick who was hands down the best instructor out of all the instructors from any surf lesson company. There are several surf lesson co. Surfing the same break so you get to see all the different instructors. Patrick made it fun, easy and a memorable time. I tipped him $ 40 but now looking back, I should have tipped him more. He towed my wife and kids out to the break and really hooked them up with perfect waves. Highly recommended.

Shannon in the office was amazing. She went out of her way to fit us in, and was super friendly and accommodating. Caroline was our instructor. She was super chill and knew what she was doing. She took time to make sure my 12 y.o. daughter and I understood the basics. She had a great positive attitude and really encouraged us. My daughter loved it and totally bonded with Caroline.
We were fortunate to have most of the break to ourselves, as it was Sat afternoon and a lot of the schools tend to only do mornings. The waves are small and consistent. My daughter rode her very first wave on her knees and was standing on her 2^nd, and rode many more after that. Awesome experience, will definitely be back!

The best! There’s nothing else to say. My kids, boy age 12 & girl age 10, loves Jason. If you want your kids to be taught correctly & have a great 1^st time experience with surfing, here’s your place. Talk to Kristin McFarland & ask for Jason.

Had an amazing first-​time-​surfing experience this morning with Maui Surf Clinics. Our instructor, Jason, put us at ease and was a truly fantastic teacher. We got up in no time!

These guys are of the charts! I did a 2h private lesson with my 8y old Seb and we both learned to surf. They were super cool and relaxed and nice, while also teaching us to understand surfing and respecting the sea. We had so much fun, and to see Sebbie surfing on his first try was unforgettable. Thanks SO much to Cat and Billy :-)

My sister, brother-​in-​law, brother, and niece (Madison) visited me on Maui the week of March 21 – 28, 2015 and Madison, a freshman at UCLA, really wanted to learn to surf. I’m not competent to teach, so I hit Unilocal for recommendations on the Westside. Maui Surf Clinics had good recommendations and a convenient location adjacent to Lahaina Breakwall, so we booked her for a private lesson. The office staff were great and Kristen, the owner, offered kamaāina rates (because Uncle David is a Maui resident).
Mikey, her instructor, was fantastic – patient and persistent and highly competent – and he went above and beyond to ensure Madison had a great experience. By the end of the extensive session, she had logged several rides and she has the bug. Her dad and I watched from the Breakwall itself and got some great video as Mikey took Madison out to the «Big Boy» break (still a forgiving but much more forceful break, where the local, experienced surfers were in the lineup). He took great care of Madison throughout and was a real credit to the organization. At the end of the day he presented Madison with a personalized certificate of achievement and Kristen, on her way out, stopped to congratulate and encourage Madison.
When my knee is healed, I plan to take a lesson or class (or three!) so I can join the fun!

Awesome!!! They were able to accommodate last minute private lessons for my son on our last day in Maui. Super friendly staff! Patrick was wonderful and super patient with my son! Great for kids!

The team was so friendly and helpful, we were blown away by how prepared they were to make sure we had the very best experience possible, from equipment to how they explained the techniques. Loads of fun, and in a perfect location — water was warm and clear but shallow so it was easy to get back up on the board after inevitably falling off. A great day. Maui never disappoints.

Awesome place to learn to surf for an affordable price. I went with a group of 5 and Billy was our instructor. He was awesome, taught us the basics, and was awesome on giving tips and letting us have some fun when we got out there. I was a little nervous and didn’t know anyone else in the group, but he made it a great time. Great workout too… arms were sore for days!

It took me a while to write this review but I have too because we had a fantastic experience! The staff is super nice and our teacher Patrick was simply awesome. We recommend this surf school a 100%, one of the best activity on Maui! We will be back! Merci!

This surf school is the best! You MUST book lessons here. Highly, highly recommend taking either surf or paddleboard lessons with Maui Surf Clinic when you are visiting Maui! They are super safe, encouraging, and make sure everyone has a fun time. It was the BEST part of our entire trip!
We did both the surfing and the SUP lessons, and they were both amazing. A special shout out to Kat, who helped me arrange all our lessons and a huge family SUP lesson (8 people ranging in age from 25 to 69 and varying athletic abilities). She was so knowledgeable and friendly and such an amazing cheery presence! She also encouraged me to keep progressing and try out different more challenging boards, which really helped me improve! Kat is the BEST!!!
We did 4 days of surfing with Jason, and he was awesome, chill, and knowledgeable. I actually felt more zen being around him. He taught us a lot about safety and really getting a feel of the water, your positioning to land, and the winds, and that really made me feel so much more comfortable going out by myself. I have had some surf lessons before, and not all surf instructors give you such detailed instruction. I really appreciated that Jason wanted to share his knowledge and help you progress. What was also cool was that Jason’s wife was out on the water a lot, and sometimes I would see her when I took out a board on my own, and she would give me tips and encouragement. Everyone affiliated with the clinic is really encouraging and friendly!
And even though he was not our official instructor, Billy was so great and kept offering tips and advice. He really cares about keeping everyone safe and having fun. What is more, my sister took some lessons with Billy while her rotator cuff was hurting, and he even towed her into the surf so she wouldn’t have to use her arm too much! That is what I call amazing service!
An added plus was that during our time surfing and paddleboarding, we saw several turtles and a very cute seal!

100% recommend Maui Surf Clinics for surf lessons and stand up paddleboard. This was my first time to Maui and my lessons with Billy and Jason were the highlight of my entire trip. I not only learned how to surf, but felt comfortable enough after 3 days of lessons to rent a board and try to ride the waves myself. I will definitely be going surfing back at home in California… Maui was such a great place to learn in the warm water!
A couple of highlights:
1. Kat, the store manager, was the friendliest and most accommodating of people. She gave us tips on where to eat, what to do, and always had a smile on her face when we arrived.
2. We saw several sea turtles while stand up paddleboarding!
If you can, ask for Billy or Jason as your instructor. They are super encouraging, helpful, and fun to surf with.

Fantastic experience. The staff and Jason my instructor made learning to surf fun and accessible. These folks live the Aloha spirit. I will be back! Note: best beach location for surf instruction.

This surf school made surfing fun and easy!!! I had billy one day and Caroline the next day. They were both great instructors! This surf school is great for beginners or experienced surfers. I would suggest taking the two day lesson. It’s two hours a day. After that you start to get tired. P. s. Billy has a dog. They call her surf dog. She rides on Billy’s bored.

Quick summary:
1. Worth the money and the FUN! We are signing up again!
2. Offers private (not group) lessons on Sunday when other surf shops are closed. Sunday is a much slower day in the water because you aren’t competing for space with other groups. Go on a Sunday!
3. Jason — awesome teacher! Very positive, easy going, and experienced at teaching. His daughter is a tweenager and surfs in competitions. He knows what he’s talking about and works well with kids.
4. Kat — store manager. Very knowledgeable about what type of lessons might work best for your family.
5. Why 5 stars: the kids asked if we could do this again tomorrow.
Kat is the store manager who is super friendly and advises the best type of classes for your family. We have a 11, 9, and 7 year old and I wanted group lessons. Kat said the 7 year old would really be better off in a private lesson due to safety. The ocean is big and in a group lesson the instructor couldn’t give her as much attention as she might need, which could be dangerous. I didn’t feel like this was an up sell, but just the truth. We went with a semi-​private lesson and it was just the 4 of us and Jason, the instructor, who gave us the basics on the beach about body position and the explained the ‘rules of the road’ to stay out of people’s way and surf safely.
Jason helped tow us out to the water and would pick the waves to ride. (It does help that he does give us a boost by pushing the board some through the wave, though. lol.) He would always tell us where to position ourselves on the board to make surfing easier. We took turns riding the waves and with private lesson like ours we caught lots of waves, which I don’t think would have happened in a group lesson. He’d always help tow the girls back out because they just don’t have enough strength and mass to get through the water.
The kids just stood up on their boards the very first time as if they had been doing this all their life — Super easy and very confident with a great teacher to encourage them.
Why 5 stars: the kids asked if we could do this again tomorrow.
