Signed our son up for a 2 hour lesson and he had a blast! Instructors were very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this company to anybody. Bought the photos and they turned out great.

Our kids, ages 11 and 12, did a 2 hour surf lesson yesterday and they absolutely loved it! They had a semi-​private lesson, just the two of them with Marcelo. He was very kind, great with the kids, and clearly was a great instructor because they were each up on the first try! We checked in at the office, met Marcelo, got the kids fitted with reef shoes and rash guards and then walked to the truck by the beach where the surf boards were located. The kids had to carry their own boards — which was great — totally good for them! He did some basic teaching on land and then took them out in the water. One kid waited by the Bouy while he took the other out — but it was plenty of surfing — I think they each caught 20 waves and were very tired by the end of their session! We topped off the morning with some Local Boys shave ice and it was perfect! Highly recommend Royal Hawaiian — fantastic experience!

First time officially surfing, and this was the place our friends referred us to. I cannot tell you how nice the staff is, but it showed throughout the entire lesson. Our first instruction was with Tavner, and he was fantastic teaching the basics and working with us. It didn’t take very long at all to start catching our own waves and basically surfing with minor instruction.
Overall, we had a fantastic time. I recommend booking a semi private lesson, and asking for Tavner!

This place was great — they really take care of you and want you to have best experience possible. The instructors take a holistic approach to teaching surfing basics — not just getting the moves down but also being in the right state of mind. I rode my first wave so that was awesome! What I loved most about this place is how friendly, caring and open the instructors and staff were — everyone was so kind, and actually cared that we had a good time. I was afraid that staff of mostly young guys would be somewhat apathetic but I didn’t find that to be the case at all. I truly felt comfortable and welcome at the surf shop.
The only downsides — I wished they stayed open later! And I wish the lesson could have been longer (cuz I was having so much fun.) And the boards they use for lessons are a little beat up but I can see why. Overall, I loved my experience.

What a friendly and fun experience! I had a private lesson with Josh and was up on the first wave. Josh was patient, calm and instilled a ton of confidence. The photos turned out great and I love having proof that I was really surfing! Everyone in the shop was laid back, inviting and casual. My only regret is that I didn’t go at the start of my week in Maui!

My wife and son took a semi-​private lesson with Dan and they had a great time. He was patient with both of them and we have great pictures of them on all the waves they caught. Had a blast! Josh made learning a few skills fun and was always upbeat and helpful. My wife and I have always wanted to surf and Josh knocked that one off our bucket list! He was patient and friendly, all you want in an instructor. He didn’t just teach us to surf, he talked to us and let us have fun. The sore muscles today are evidence he made us work to get there. Can’t say enough good things about the place, Dave, Papa John and Josh, made us feel like family. Thanks for the experience guys.
P. S. The private lesson was well worth it. By the time we finished I thought we had been surfing for way more than 2 hours!

Took a private surf lesson with Kea. He was patient and super fun. With great instruction, we stood up every time and got to ride at least 15 waves each in a short period of time. Our shoulders were definitely sore though. They also have a professional photographer that’ll take photos of you as you ride the waves. I’d highly recommended purchasing the photos. They’re great! If you’re a couple taking a private lesson, just buy one CD with your photos. Me & my husband unknowingly bought two for no reason at all and paid double because the guy said he usually just makes one CD per person. So, we have one disc with the exact same photos.
I’d highly recommend this place to anyone. Love them! Surfs up!

Great place to rent a board! I got a SUP board for 3 hrs for $ 35, they take credit cards, friendly staff, hose on site to clean up. It’s about 3 blocks from the beach and around two blocks from shave ice :) watch out for the coral off the beach, though!

My wife and I signed our three kids up for surfing lessons while in Maui. Ages 13, 11, and 4. Yes, 4. The two older kids were assigned to Josh and the 4 year old had a private lesson with Ikaila. I can’t begin to say enough great things about these two guys. My wife and I sat on the shoreline and watched as the kids were catching waves and riding them into the shoreline. Our 4 year old had a blast and rode some waves on his own board as well. The kids had so much fun, we came back the next day and rented a few boards for a few hours.
Yes it’s one of those things that cost a fair amount but the memories will last a lifetime. The staff at the counter were also very helpful and easy to work with.
Oh yah, the photo guy was also great. Took awesome photos. I think his name is Rick.

This was my husband and I first time surfing in Maui and we were lucky to have Josh as our instructor. Josh was very friendly patient and made us feel comfortable in the water to get us both to stand up on our surfboard for the first time ever surfing .
We will definitely be booking a semi private lesson with him again when we return next year .

My daughter just finished a private lesson with Ikaika and we were as pleased with this year as we were with our lesson last year. He is fantastic with kids (I bet all their instructors are) and she is really getting the hang of surfing. I love the local clothing lines they sell too!
We won’t miss a chance for a lesson on any of our visits.
