Maui Spearfishing Academy is designed to teach you everything you need to know to spearfish safely and successfully. Our emphasis on the awareness and removal of invasive species helps to ensure the preservation of this activity for future generations.

History

Established in 2012.

The creation of Maui Spearfishing Academy (MSA) stems from a rich passion for both the sport of fishing, as well as a love for the reef and its inhabitants throughout the Hawaiian Islands. For over 40 years, the Twitchell family has been active in recreational diving and fishing on West Maui. Bobby Twitchell, the founder of MSA and Maui native, learned to recognize the nearby coastline as a renewable source of food and fun.

Having earned a degree in Education from Arizona State University, Bobby knew he could combine his love for the Hawaiian waters and extensive knowledge in the sport of spear fishing to teach people how to spearfish. Through the combined efforts of the Twitchell family, their friends and the most respected spear fishing supply store on West Maui; «All About Fish», MSA was born.

Want to learn to free-dive and spearfish? Bobby is your guy. He is an excellent teacher, tells you the steps, has you practice, shows you himself, has you do it and then gives you exact feedback. I took the free-diving class and made it 40 feet my 4^th time down.
The day I went most the water around the island was junk: heavy winds, rain and murky water. Bobby took us to a perfect spot, we had an extra bonus of swimming out past one of the best coral reef’s on the island.
I highly recommend Bobby, his crew and the Maui Spearfishing Academy. I will be back for a spear fishing lesson in a few months.

Great experience. Bobby is the man. He taught us the correct fish to shoot (invasive), How to hold our breath a crazy long time and Dive Bomb some fishies. You will be amazed what you learn and what your body can actually do. I’d recommend the two day trip, learn to free dive first then smash some Roi! We even caught an octopus.

Went spearfishing with my wife and brother-in-law. We were paired up with Dave and Joe, who showed us a fantastic time. Only two others went with us, a father and son. The experience was around 5.5 hours, with about 2 hours going over safety, diving techniques, types of game and invasive fish, and practicing breathholding techniques on land. The next hour or so was out in the water practicing diving, breathing, and equalizing to the pressure underwater as well as how to use a speargun. We then spent around 2 hours with Joe (the other two were with Dave) snorkelling and looking for fish, as well as practicing setting up ambushes. It was an exhausting experience but the thrill of a lifetime — we all had a great experience even though we didn’t manage to land anything and walked away learning new techniques. Dave’s group had better luck: one of the other 2 landed a 7 pound fish! It was pretty atypical but anything is possible.
Overall I’d recommend this to anyone who is interested in learning more about freediving, snorkelilng, and spearfishing that’s very comfortable in the water. All gear (snorkel, wetsuit top, speargun, fins, and gloves) are provided for rental with the tour. Although I don’t think I was very good at it and it’s probably not my cup of tea, I had a fantastic time and value the experience.

This was by far one of the most informative all around great adventure. Bobby was knowledgeable, informative, and amazing at articulating his points into learnable material. The class before the hunt covered everything from general safety, fish identification, and free diving breathing techniques which improved my breath hold from a 1 minute 30 seconds to just under two minutes and thirty seconds which I did not believe possible. This base knowledge not only allowed me to obtain 45 ft dives but also to stay down for 30 – 45 seconds and not feel the panic off needing to reach the surface. This experience was not only fun but most of all informative so I may carry this knowledge into future hunts. Also the hunt was amazing seeing tons of fish, and other marine life. As well as yielding my dinner for the evening of one of the rarest fish in Hawaii the oka I’ a which is also know as grey snapper. I want to thank bobby for taking me out on such a awesome hunt and definitely coming back for round two.

I cannot say enough great things about this place. We were greeted by our guide, Bobby, who was friendly and knowledgeable. He has a great backstory and is enthusiastic about his job and the sport. He taught us great techniques for breathing, free diving, and spear fishing that can be taken to almost any beach. The event was awesome and entertaining. We didn’t catch any fish, but that’s probably expected for beginners and we had fun. Bobby was very ethical and aware of marine life conservation. He made sure you only shot at invasive or game fish that the Hawaiians would approve of. This excursion was everything we hoped for and more. I highly recommend MSA!!!

I emailed 2 places with the same request and MSA was the only one that replied.
This was an Unreal experience.
We did the Free diving and Spearfishing Combo. It wasn’t on the website but was recommended by Bobby, the owner based on my questions and requests. well worth the money.
This is a course done over 2 days which was the best way to go for me and my 14yr old daughter. She learned to free dive and got to about 15 feet with a speargun in the second class. Bobby was a great teacher and responded to all our questions.

This was one of my favorite activities of my entire trip, and that’s coming from someone who didn’t even catch anything! Honestly, this experience is like a combination of spearfishing, snorkeling, and free-diving combined. You’ll learn about different fish, how to hold you breath underwater longer to be a more skilled free-diver, and learn to spearfish. I actually held my breath for over 2 minutes which is much more than I ever had been able to do previously. Overall, the instructor is personable and very knowledgable. He’s happy to recommend places to eat and things to do in Hawaii too!
